The Idol (2023)
Why the icky feeling? Because...
This was the biggest let down of HBO as of late. At first, I was so excited to see Lily Rose and of course her great supporting actors (Randolph, Sumney, Azeris, Nef, Levy) in their respective roles. I was curious to see The Weekend act, because a tv show is not a music video. I was instantly repulsed by his character. The focus was all on him and how his character controlled Jocelyn.
Why did I have this sickening feeling that this story of a beautiful, conflicted musician was ripped out from underneath her? Turns out the narrative became controlled by men. The original show, nearly 80% completed by of Amy Siemetz, was suddenly handed over to and reimagined by two men. One of these men has several allegations towards misconduct in the workplace and HBO thought he'd be a good addition to this story?
It's heartbreaking. You can see the potential narratives this story could have embraced and explored. Narrative both fictional or nonfiction (Murphy, Spears, Winehouse, etc). Instead, they reduced Jocelyn to a shell and The Weekend took control with a powerful, disgusting power play.
Love Is Blind (2020)
WTF S2
Season 1 was great - entertaining in every sense of reality TV show with a sense of realness. Season 2 is only the trashiest of trashy - J approaching her obsession while she has a « solid » bf ... Damien being a terrible person... I just can't. Especially while the Hamiltons are trying their best to keep everyone in check while being the only couple that is still happy... every season should be about new couples. The boxes worked. Love is blind.... sometimes.
A Million Little Things (2018)
Relatable and Beautiful 🌟
Think you're too good for a soapy drama? Think again!
Some of us turn to TV to escape. Others turn to TV to feel and find stories like their own. Whether it's an experience that everyone lives, like a broken heart, or a more nuanced life-long battle like racism, addiction, depression or assault, this show covers the most intense and raw life experiences with compassion and great story-telling.
Season 2 had its rough patches but season 3, mostly aired in 2021 acknowledges the pandemic but continues to build the rich stories these wonderful characters are telling. Roam becomes the strong one. Gary becomes the wonderful uncle. Sophie reckons with what so many young girls have to deal with. Maggie is just Maggie. :)
Long story short, this show is beautifully done. And if you're missing the funny escapism of Friends or Psych (heyyy James Roday Rodriguez) or think you're too good for a soap, I challenge you to watch a few episodes and see if you won't fall in love with this show and it's rich, diverse characters too. Never thought I'd say this but - Thank you, ABC!
