The Old Way (2023)
Why is Nicolas Cage here? Such a waste of time
Yet another B rated movie staring Nicolas Cage. Pretty much the story is Briggs used to be a " bad ass " sheriff who apparently gave the life up. Later while living a life as a store owner his house gets attacked by bandits who are running from the law. And as luck would have it the boss of the party is the little kid whos father Briggs shot when he was young in front of him. So he takes it upon himself to murder his wife and teach him a lesson. The funny thing is the kids dad is the dumb one who went for the gun to try and shoot Briggs, its not like he wanted to shoot the kids dad until he acted stupid. So the kid having this vendetta against him is kinda stupid. But also the writing in this movie is terrible. It comes across as if they didnt mean to run into Briggs house, but then it kinda does. But yet he is also running from Briggs even tho he says he wants to kill him. Its like pick a side. What do you wanna do? Not only is the story poorly written but the dialogue is laughably bad. So many lines I laughed at cuz of how stupid they were. You would think atleast maybe the action scenes could save this movie but no. The end " shoot out " is boring. Most of the kills are off screen. The only good scene for action was kinda the beginning and thats it. If you are gonna have a poor story atleast make up for it in the action. If it wasn't for Nick cage in this, this would have just ended up in the bargain bin of movies forgotten like the rest of the b rated movies. Idk why Nick Cage was even in this. 4/10.
M3GAN (2022)
Standard A.I horror film. Childs Play 2019 did it better.
So I watched Megan, lets talk about it. This is a PG13 " horror " movie that is a nice hour and half. Honestly 45 mins in I totally forgot I was even watching a horror film. Other then the dog part everything was going fine. Typically in horror movies things are already going wrong, i feel like this movie took to long to get to any actually horror parts. Almost as if the writers were writing a genuine android story to help a kid deal with loss and then someone was like " but what if we made it a horror movie " then the changed the last 30 mins of their script to fit that. When people talk about beginner horror movies to show to people I guess this would fall into that category cuz its not scary at all with very little kills with only 5 in total. I went into this movie thinking it was gonna be cheesy with some good laughs and some good kills. Sadly I was wrong in both cases. None of the few kills were cool, it doesn't make up for it in gore sense its rated PG13. Its also not funny at all and not even in a cheesy way. The dance scene you see in the trailer is honestly really random and doesn't make much sense in context to the film. Also at one point she runs on all four which idk if think thought this was gonna be scary but it just made no logical sense cuz she is a human looking doll idk why she couldn't run normally. Also 20 mins in to this movie I already knew how it was gonna end and when I was right I chuckled to my self. I think this movie should have spent more time coming up with a good script and making it R rated instead of wasting all their budget advertising this movie. Sadly this was just another basic android thriller movie. If you wanna see a good version of the same concept just watch the 2019 version of Childs play a way better film. 5.5/10.
The Price We Pay (2022)
This was a let down from Director Ryûhei Kitamura. Movie had potential
You know when I saw that Ryûhei Kitamura Directed a new movie, the same guy who made Versus and Midnight Meat Train I was kinda excited. Especially cuz alot of the times his movies tend to put a crazy spin on things. Sadly this one attempts that 30 mins in and it has little to no pay off. Pretty much these crooks rob a pawn shop and take Grace as a hostage. Alex and Shane are both brother criminals. Alex is the crazy one of the bunch. Hes played by Emile Hirsch, his character is really annoying and poorly acted on his part which is weird cuz he normally does a good job in movies. We also have Stephen Dorff who isnt a bad actor yet normally ends up in bad movies. He does a fine job in this, you can tell he is actually putting effort into his role. He plays Cody an ex military medic. Gigi Zumbado plays Grace and this is her leading role debut. Unfortunately its not in a good movie. The dialog in this movie was so bad like it felt like first draft notes dialog. But looking up the writers past work it honestly makes sense cuz all of his movies have horrible ratings. Also the cinematography in this was just bad, coupled with terrible editing. We get tons of in post zooming that is so off putting. One scene that lasted maybe 2 mins had a total of 8 shots jumping back in forth and it was just a standing still talking scene. Pretty much the groups car breaks down, they go to this farm to stay the night and find out some bad stuff is going on. Pretty much under the far the Evil Grandpa is a organ harvester who captures " filth " aka random people he deems worth of killing to harvest their organs cuz he thinks they wasted their lives. He also gives us a long monolog on how his daughters was killed by some dude so now he takes it out on people. The whole basement area really set things up for something crazy but gave us nothing. Like no dead bodies, people getting tortured or experimented on. Anything would have been better then some old dude just monologuing and harvesting organs. He also takes Alexs eyes saying they are good when he literally wears glasses lol. The story is whack, they never explain why this big Jodie chick is super strong. At the end she takes sooooo much damage before dying. This movie fell very flat and wasnt good at all. 3/10.
Jung_E (2023)
A solid Scifi drama with some great action scenes and heartfelt moments
From the jump Jung_E throws you into this sci-fi world where are lead is kicking some Robots ass. Like In most Korean Sci-fi movies the visuals are great in this and the action scenes are fantastic. That being said the movie really only has 2 awesome action scenes. The first 8 mins and then the last 15 mins. Now that might seem very few far-between and while yes it is the rest of the movie is alot deeper then that. Now grant it I was going into this hoping for alot of action but what we got is a scientist drama about a future war and how far companies will go when you sign away your likeness. The main story is Jung_E was a War hero who was injured on the battlefield so they got her brain and all her memories and sense her mother signed the Type C brain transfer this gave the government the rights to do whatever they wanted to do with not only her memories but her likeness. Which is something we see nowadays with dead actors and them being used in other forms of media. Her daughter is the lead scientist who is trying to help build the perfect solider sense her mother was that. But the test keeps failing each time at one spot of the simulation. The question is, do they have time to iron out the kinks before the higher ups want it or will they fail to give them the product they want. While the movie didnt give me all the action I was looking for the drama in this movie was actually good. I enjoyed the characters and the fleshed out sci-fi world. I felt like a side story in Ghost in the Shell. The endings fight scene which is the longest was fantastic. The fight choreography is great, it gets really intense and all the CGI looks really good. Also I didn't think it was going tug on my heartstrings there at the end. The ending saved this movie and Im glad I watched it. A solid 7.5/10.
Infinity Pool (2023)
Pretentious Filmmaking from beginning to end.
Infinity Pool is a good example of a nepotism baby getting hype from their parents but failing to show anything from it. I mainly watched this movie cuz I like Alexander Skarsgard, Mia goth is in this as well and while her voice is hella annoying in all those clips saying jamesy that was really the only super annoying part from her in this movie. The thing that hurts this movie the most is the screenplay. It doesn't know what its trying to be. Its like he got to focused on being super artsy and edgy in some scenes and forgot to tell an engaging story that made sense. Pretty much James is on an isolated island on vacation and apparently their laws are very strict here. Like the funny video from parks in rec where everything is straight to jail but in this case alot of crimes the punishment is execution. But this island has a special thing you can do if u have the cash. Pretty much if you pay them they can make a body double of you and that gets killed instead of you. Well once he does this Mia Goths character introduces him to other people who have also done this procedure. Well this pretty much turns them loose and they act like they are untouchable. Going around shootin people, doing drugs and acting obnoxious around other guests in the resort. They know no matter what if they get caught, they get a clone made and then they are right back out to do whatever they want. And while that starts an interesting concept alot isnt explained. Like why is some grungy low tech place with a vat of goop able to clone people? Why are they so nonchalant with their rules and just let them continue acting crazy. This movie also wasnt as brutal as they made it seem to be. There is some death but its really not that bad for a Rated R movie. There is a huge orgy scene with tons of nudity and feels like ur on a acid trip going through a kaleidoscope. But other then that I dont think they pushed the envelope. After the half way mark you realize this story isnt going anywhere. The characters arnt very interesting. The events that are happening are meaningless. Some shots looked nice and the performances from Alex and Mia were good. The movies Title also has almost nothing to do with the actual movie itself. I was hopping for something alot darker, more violent and sick and twisted and thats not what we get at all. The ending was so stupid too, I dont know what they were thinking. This movie is just odd, Infinity Pool gets a 4.5/10.
Shotgun Wedding (2022)
A Hilarious new comedy. RomComs are back
Typically when a movie gets sent straight to streaming or has a short run in theaters its not a good sign. And lets be real both our Leads are not normally box office Gold. BUT that being said Shotgun Wedding breaths life of fresh air back into Romcoms. Or should I say action Romcoms. This movie reminds me of everything I loved about early 2000's Romcoms, when movies could just be fun. I feel like nowadays everyone takes everything way to serious, reading some of these negative reviews on this movie it seems like everyone has a stick up their ass. Shotgun Wedding is very enjoyable, alot more then I thought it was gonna be. Pretty much they are getting married on an island in the Philippines when suddenly it gets interrupted by some pirates who want their money. So they have to find a way to save their wedding party all while getting rid of the Pirates. This movie has tons of laughs, I was chuckling to my self alot and there were honestly some actual laugh out loud moments. Jlo does a great job in this, some people dont like her acting but I think she does good. Josh does a good job as well and their relationship is believable. I love the banter they have back and forth during this movie. Also this movie had some surprising violence in it and some actually good action scenes, full of funny moments as well. There is also a twist in this movie I actually didnt see coming which was nice. Jennifer Coolidge was a really funny side character. The Pirates all had unique looks to them. It also had some sweet and heartfelt moments as well. This movie is a strong hour and 40mins with no slow parts and boring bits. It was fun laughs and action from beginning to end. Give this one a shot I think you will enjoy it. Solid 8/10.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
M. Night Shyamalan back in the Win column
Knock at the Cabin is the new movie from M Night Shyamalan. The premise of this movie was very interesting. A family at a cabin who suddenly get 4 visitors telling them the whole worlds lives hang on their shoulders. They must sacrifice one of themselves to save the whole world. That leaves the question for not only the viewers but also the family. Do they believe these strangers or do they think they are full of BS and crazy? Going into this I was alittle worried cuz M Night hasn't been on the best roll with movies lately. He has had alot more misses then hits but its safe to say this one was actually good. Jonathan Groff and Ben Alrdidge were good in this and i liked learning more about their characters in flashbacks and we get to understand their relationship. Kristen Cui plays their daughter and she was adorable and did such a fantastic job in this. Then we get the 4 horsemen of the apocalypses, everyone did a pretty good job but Dave Bautista has his time to shine sense he is the main one and I think this is one of his best acting moments to date. This movies story is very interesting and leaves you with that question, would you sacrifice one of your loved ones to save the world or save the ones you love killing the rest of the world and being the last 3 on earth until you die. Its definitely one I was mulling over after this movie. I liked how the story slowly unfolded and you are trying to figure out if you can believe them or not. Are they some crazy cult members or did they actually get visions foretelling the end of the world. I also like the tension this film brings. The cinematography was also really nice in this movie. Sparingly M Night doesn't have his signature twist at the end but regardless I think the ending was really good in this movie. In all Knock at the Cabin was an enjoyable time with some good characters and a interesting story to boot. 7.5/10.
Legion of Super-Heroes (2023)
A great start to DC Animated films in 2023
Legion of Super-Heroes is the newest 2023 DC animated movie of the year. This movie honestly should be called Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes sense she is the main character of the film. Many people dont know who the Legion of Super-Heroes are, so let me explain real quick. Pretty much the are the Justice League in the 31st century. Supergirl is able to get there but a Portal Superman has. She goes there to learn to be a better superhero cuz she is struggling to adjust her new life on Earth. Let me first start by saying this new animation style is BEAUTIFUL. I love it, I also really enjoyed the Super Sons CGI animation they had. But DC is always doing good in the animation department. The voice acting is pretty top notch all around. The only character I didnt really like was Batman. No offence to Jensen Ackles but I dont really like his Batman voice, it sounds like he is trying to hard. The story in this is pretty basic but that can be said about all of DC animated movies sense they are all about an hour and 20 mins long. So we cant get any super deep meaningful story or detailed twist. The Legion is under attack by the Circle and Supergirl has to help to stop them. We get some interesting and cool side characters as well like Brainiac 5 voiced by Harry Shum Jr. Mon El, Timberwolf, Triplicate Girl, Dawn Star ( Which if they ever do a live action version literally cast Cynthia Hamidi the voice actor, she is perfect looking for her. ) The action in this was really good as well. Some solid fights and we get like 8 action sequences through out the film. I also really enjoy the sound design of Supergirl fighting, the BOOMS you hear are a nice touch when she punches. In all this is another solid film from DC. 7.5/10.
