I've seen the original Walking Tall (1973, I believe) and it is different from this new version. But, the original was incredibly drawn out for 2 hours and very slow. The basic points of the original are here in this remake, but the action is revved up.
The movie is short with less dialogue, but it is also an action movie. No Oscar hopefuls in this movie, just good, clean ass-whipping that only The Rock can deliver. As he takes on the casino, you can sense his frustrations and put yourself in his shoes. The way he fights his enemies are the way that you or I would want to. Not many action films do that nowadays.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has taken a lot of flack for his acting, which I think is a shame. Every review you hear, there's always a 'WWE' reference. I don't believe that when Arnold Schwarzenegger started acting, his reviews always included how his movies were like bodybuilding or was similar to Mr. Olympia. There's a stigma attached to The Rock that's really unfair. Especially since he's already a better actor than Arnold ever was, and he's still improving. He's also a more versatile actor as well. Arnold was always the same character.
Also, it seems as though people are upset that a Samoan/African American man is playing that part of a Caucasian and changing his name from Buford Pusser to Chris Vaughn. Honestly, who can see The Rock with the name Buford? Really?
In short, the movie is similar to the original, just more action packed. Compare this to the original Walking Tall, and you'll see which one captures your interest more.
