Juste la fin du monde (2016)
Another proof that Xavier Dolan is a great director
The director was very successful to bring such a difficult story to the screen. This is a story that is easier to write as a novel where the author could explain what every character is thinking and how and why a character feels or react in a given manner. Only a skilled director could achieve this. All the scenes are shot in one house, except a short scene where the 2 brothers were in a car. The actors are all known and competent actors. Their performances were good as expected. Marion Cottillard is a very good actress, but for some reason, in some scenes, I did not feel she is on her best performances. Overall very good movie, highly recommended for people who like movies with some psychological depth.
Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
Bad quality
I went to see this movie because of the actresses: Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. Usually they know how to choose the movie they participate in. With that script they gave them they did what they could. The other actor "Chiwetel Ejiofor" was not good at all. It is fine to adapt an excellent movie (The original one is from Argentina and was a real masterpiece), but at least the adaptation should show that some original work was done. Even if I knew the story, I found it hard to follow at the end. I can only imagine how somebody that did know the story would feel. I do not recommend this movie at all. I strongly recommend the original one: El secreto de sus ojos (2009).
L'orchestre des aveugles (2014)
Excellent Movie
I went to watch this movie at the Montreal Film Festival today without any expectations. To my surprise, it turned out to be the best movie that I watched this year (in general I go to theater once a week). Although everything is perfect in this movie, in my opinion what makes it stand out is the way the story is told. It depicts with a great deepness how the characters feel at each moment. I stayed until the end of the closing credits because I wanted to keep that mood that the movie put me on and because the music was so good to listen to. I realized that I was not the only one that felt that way when I was leaving, near the exit door, where I saw a women very happy about the movie still singing the soundtrack with her husband. I do not think people gonna be able to watch this beautiful movie outside of festivals but I totally recommend it for people who may have the chance to watch it.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Perfect movie
Different, ambitious, special, amazing, ... These are words that come to my mind in an attempt to describe this movie. But the one that comes again and again is "Perfection". Everything is perfect in this movie. Did you imagine watching a movie where you are taken from one story to another and find all the stories intriguing. That was done before, but here the same actor in different stories, and in top of that your concentration stays at the top level. I think having such great actors helps. I liked how the switch from one story to another comes as a kind of relief from a difficult situation like in "Pans Labyrinth". In top of that you have interesting proverbs to add to your list. One is mentioned in this page, the other that I like a lot is: why do boundaries exist? The movie gives an interesting answer to this question, and many others.
Inch'Allah (2012)
Very good movie
I watched it this evening in Montreal. The story describes how a Canadian humanitarian doctor tries to reconcile her life in both sides of the border between Israel and Palestine. The scenario is very good. Events occur smoothly in a straight forward way. The performance of Evelyne Brochu (the humanitarian doctor in the movie) is perfect. She was able to transmit the emotions experienced by the character in a powerful way. I liked the non judging aspect of the movie. On can see both sides as victims in certain way. My overall experience was very good. Both the actress "Evelyne Brochu" and the director "Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette" gonna be in my watch list from now on.
La source des femmes (2011)
Not as good as I was expecting
Maybe the problem was to read about the movie before watching it. But I really was disappointed. I admit that my expectations were high. I found the story too linear. The kind of movie that you know how it ends at the first 15 minutes. The subject is interesting. If it was treated with more creativity, would be a less boring movie. I think when you are making a movie and thinking about how to teach people from a different culture how to think, is not an easy task. But still it is a good attempt to bring to the screen this kind of subject, at least people will talk about it. I do not know how accurately what he shows in this movie reflects the reality on those countries, but I hope people from those countries take the example that the movie give to them.
