Honokaa bôi (2009)
He wants food, but she wants a new husband.
A coming of age film about a young man meets a psychopath grandmom during holiday breaks in Hawaii. This film attempted to execute itself in the romantic, artsy way, but unfortunately, the script somehow didn't feel right. Just plain weird..
There are quite a number of characters introduced in the movie. And while, of course, they all have their own unique charms, but their stories seemed didn't really matter in the end.
Because the core of this story was just about the strange relationship between the Honokaa boy and this fatal attraction-ish old lady. Plus, also my favorite Yu Aoi only showed up in this movie for like 10 seconds, which is a bummer.
Perhaps, what I liked most about it this movie was the cinematography and the overall art direction which were absolutely gorgeous.
Yarn (2020)
Corny at best
This movie is stupid from both concepts and execution.
It brings all the cliche scenarios into one movie-two people are in love, but one of them has a serious personal problems and kept it to themselves until the day they part ways.
And then the movie keeps adding more and more drama clusters into the storyline from domestic problems, betrayal, illness, and even death, you name it. The man is so in love with the girl, but she's too stupid to see it and keeps finding excuses to runaway from him. Why?
I know it's the same in real life, but in this case, sometimes just just doesn't make much sense.
And i just don't get the perception in Japanese movies and series of the concept of being "success" or "reaching the life goals" is to be living abroad and get to speak English with foreigners?? Japan is a beautiful country with rich culture and so many people around the world is madly in love with your country. You don't need to be fluent at speaking English to look "cool". I watched the other hit series "First Love" on Netflix and it's pretty much the same thing. But at least First Love has so much better storyline and execution.
I like Nana Komatsu, but this is just a below average soap opera.
