Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021)
Absolute cringe fest
I could not even get myself to finish the movie. It was the two promising actors that got me to watch the movie , but a very mediocre script and lines that make you cringe make it a very difficult watch.
Minamata (2020)
Beautiful movie !
Depp is back !
Minamata follows the story of W. Eugene Smith ,( considered as one of the most important photo journalists ever) into Japan to report the story of the Minamata poisoning.
Depp is in his elements portraying the disinterested alcoholic photographer effortlessly.
It's a haunting tale of one of the worst industrial accidents, beautifully told. Director Andrew Levitans use of colours and lighting is both inspiring and moving.
Throughout the movie we get to see snapshots of the beautiful black and white images that Eugene presented to the world, in particular his most recognised photo of Tomoko and mother in Bath.
I really don't get some people who call this movie slow . Hello ! Its art ! The frames, the colours, the images. That's what moves people
Rating: 8.5/ 10.
Pariyerum Perumal (2018)
Over hyped
Though the topics discussed are important to the society, the movie itself falls extremely short. The movie felt disjointed, overly stretched with a song every 5 minutes.
There's a parallel track about a serial killer which again made no sense. The acting was also very average. And what was the point about the dog ?
The protagonist is shown as loving the dog beyond limits, but at the end mentions the dog as a low lying creature ?
Stalker (1979)
Poetry in motion
My first viewing of a Russian film and of course it had to be a Tarkovsky. " Stalker "is poetry in motion. Every frame is so beautifully shot that they are akin to moving photographs.
It was a joy to watch the visionary craftsman at work. One of Tarkovskys signature moves is the delibrately slow takes, sometimes lingering on for minutes. An example is a shot of the three main leads traveling on a rail cart which goes for on for over 5 minutes. To any other filmmaker , this might seem pointless and risky. But for Tarkovsky, there's a method to the madness, there's a rhythm that is almost hypnotic and trance like.
The film is also beautifully written and is poignant. A theme which is true even now. The screenplay is written by Andrei himself .
The soundtrack from Eduard Artemyev is also haunting and leaves a lasting impression.
The movie is definitely long at 2 hours and 41 minutes of run time, but in essence only feels like an hour due to the captivating nature of the cinematography. You truly feel like you are with the three leads in their search for the strange and mysterious secretive place called zone. All of the actors are in superb form playing their roles to the tee.
Sadly, by many popular reports, this is also the film that caused the death of the legendary filmmaker and few others as well . This was supposed to be one of Tarkovskys grandest films. Shot on a large scale canvas and with an experimental film roll. However, once finished, they realised that it did not provide the desired result. Instead of the brown tint that Tarkovsky wished for, the end result was dark and unusable ( atleast in the 1980s). Tarkovsky, being the perfectionist that he is, decided to shoot the whole film all over again. Only this time, it meant limited budgets. This forced them to change the location to near a chemical plant. The surrounding area was so toxic that it was said that many of the actors had allergic reactions . And after a few years Tarkovsky and few others died of cancer.
As for the original film that was shot first, the film was sadly destroyed in a fire in 1988.
Stalker is a must watch for any movie lover, especially if you are a student of the movies and plan to get into it.
Rating : 9/10 ( multiple viewing recommended)
Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020)
Very loose script
The show is largely passable, the script has innumerous loopholes and is hardly engaging. What makes it worse is Abishek Bachchan whose acting is cringe worthy. It feels as if he's trying too hard.
The Least of These: The Graham Staines Story (2019)
Very poorly made
Watched it due to the interesting true story that this movie is, but it's so poorly made . Really bad. The dialogues are so poorly written, and why do the Indian actors speak in the weirdest accent
Wildlife (2018)
Difficult watch
I don't understand why some filmmakers choose to make movies that are difficult to watch for the viewers. I'm not sure if the pace of the movie or the mundane script that was so off putting.
I watched the movie for Paul Dano and Jake both of whom am huge fans of.
The movie is basically about stupid people and the mistakes stupid people make.
There were a few nice shots here and there and the color palettes were beautiful, but on earth was the movie about.
