Aynabaji (2016)
Effortlessly Captivating
This one sets new benchmark for both Bangladeshi and Bengali films. A+ is every department - plot, cinematography, script, cast and music. Aynabaji is probably the first Bengali movie that will keep you glued to the screen without a moment of break. I didn't find one loose second in the film. Its the most visually delightful Bangladeshi movie till date. Old Dhaka, already quiet charming but chaotic - is presented as a wonderland! If you have grown up in Dhaka or are familiar with Dhaka political power-play, this story would be nothing unbelievable to you. It feeds in to the curiosity you already have. To be frank, Chanchal Chowdhury raises the bar for Bangladeshi movie actor too high. His transformation to different characters feels effortless and natural. Debutant Nabila does justice to her character as well. Casting is sensible - though we'd be happy to not see Partho Barua in this masterpiece. Music isn't the best feature of this movie, but then again it is not the kind of movie that needs music to carry it off. Songs and background scores are soothing to the ears with great lyrics. For lack of a better word, I'd only say the ending is 'mind-blowing'. It leaves you wanting for more.
Talvar (2015)
Engaging till the last scene
Honestly I had high expectations from the movie as it casts genuine actors like Irfan Khan and Konkona Sen, that too directed by Meghna Gulzar. It exceeded by expectations in many ways. An intelligent, thoroughly researched piece that kept me engaged every moment of the film. It is unpredictable and not an overly 'tragic' looking film. The content overpowers the drama and human element. Irfan is effortlessly charming and witty, yet a hopeless character who comes an inch close to solving the case. It is one of those films that left me reading all wikipedia entries related o the real incident. Though otherwise humorless, Irfan's wry humor is a relief in few scenes.
Konkona doesn't come across as an overly grieving mother, just as the script demands - leaving us wondering what the case really was. Though initially I felt she'd be too young to play a teenager's mother - the portrayal was perfect. Talvar doesn't have music to really speak of - but any prop like music was not needed to make this a great film. Lastly, I have officially joined Meghna Gulzar's fan club.
Gunday (2014)
There is NOTHING to like in Gunday
Brilliantly packaged baseless nothing. From the lame alteration of history to clueless depiction of Kolkata - the team had absolutely no idea what they were doing. To be a bit generous, it felt like a classic 80s action flick but the music is again goofed up.
The love angle in the movie is neither entertaining, feel-good and in no point in the film it had any conviction. Two guys flirts with a cabre dancer like 14 year old adolescents and in a span of seven days the best friends part because of their 'true love' for Nandita. It would be hard to find a single person who didn't predict her to be working for the police. Waste of time and money.
