Evil Dead Rise (2023)
An insult to the deadites!!
Some movies are like bad first dates, you know in the first 5 minutes it's not going to work out. The dialogue and writing is cringe from the start. I left an hour into it because it was utterly blasphemous to the evil dead trilogy. This felt like a franchise money grab, uninspired and commercial. Or like an Amazon prime, reductive glossy and corny caricature of an ED movie. It evokes nothing scary, nothing funny and while the acting is fine, the characters feel meaningless. It is the Coming 2 America of ED movies. This could have been a fun installment but instead it is an unnecessary regret.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Lots of potential
I get people have are over protective of Tolkiens work, his books are unparalleled to any other fantasy and adventure novels. But the books live where they do untouched and any cinematic take on the them will always be something entirely separate. Tolkien would hate any movie or show based on his work and it's likely no one will ever be entirely true to the source material.
With that said, this show is fun and I'm excited to see how it evolves. It already has covered many interesting places, creatures, lands. It really has the potential to grow into a wonderful series. Let's hope the writing stays interesting and the actors develop their characters. Will keep watching!
Heartstopper (2022)
Adorable
This is perhaps the sweetest show I've ever seen. It's a feel good and delightful series. The acting and writing is wonderful. Glad their is a second season coming.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
A western that washes over you
It took me about an hour into the film before I realized I had been entranced by it. Jonny greenwoods score is a marvel and holds the mood of the film. There is always something strange and.incandescent about Campions films. Its a powerful film that once it has you in its grip it ceases to let go.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Delightful and Fresh
Exactly what you would expect from a PT Anderson coming of age story: wild, unpredictable, off center, beautifully filmed, wonderful sound and score. It's a real treat I loved every frame.!
Maid (2021)
Ultimately mediocre
The acting and writing is decent at times and pretty cringey at other times. It's a mediocre show, not sure what is driving the high ratings on IMDb. Seems suspect. I've seen worse but pretty disappointed a few episodes in.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Excellent series
The perfect escape and a totally engrossing series. Wonderful acting and direction. Excellent!!
Watchmen (2019)
Incredible
Lideloff nailed it with this one. Such a fantastic show!! Very refreshing and great acting. Highly recommend!
The Irishman (2019)
Pure and engrossing Cinema
Only Scorcese can make a 3.5 hour film that is sweeping, enthralling and totally riveting. Deniro, Pesci and Pacino sit in these roles as comfortable as any actor could. This film still has a dose of Scorsese's neuroticism but also contains a level of patience and examination that feels new for him in this genre. It's a truly epic and heartfelt telling of a brutal story.
