The Accursed (2021)
Atmospheric Indie Horror at it's finest!
I love atmospheric horror films like Eggers' The Witch and Aster's Hereditary, and this is right in there with those classic movies. I was immediately drawn into these characters and their world. The folklore behind the story enriched the experience and gave the film a unique element that made it stand out from every other horror film. This isn't a jump scare film, it's a layered tale that grows on you as you're watching and becomes creepier with each frame. All of the main cast was excellent, the standout for me being the young Izabela Vidovic. Every choice she made gave me a grin, because it was deliciously devious. What a great first feature for the directors Kathryn Michelle and Elizabeta Vidovic! Can't wait to see what's next for all involved!
Waiting in the Wings: Still Waiting (2018)
Fun, heart warming musical
It's just the right amount of fun and escapism one needs right now. If you're looking to laugh and be entertained and maybe even have your heart warmed a bit, this is the movie for you. Lovable characters, great new musical numbers! You can tell a lot of heart and soul was put into making this film! I loved it! And it has some great cameos by some real comic legends !
Kelly's Hollywood (2015)
Impacted me forever
When I saw this little documentary, I had no idea what I was about to see. I had no idea the impact it would then have on me, even now five years after I first saw it! I've sadly always had the inclination to feel bad for people with down syndrome, but this doc made me understand even more so what a beautiful gift they are to this world. And it really changed my perspective on today's testing that allows for someone to find out whether their child may be down syndrome in the womb, and to then be able to make a choice if whether or not they should still be brought into the world. I am a pro choice guy, so this is not about that. It' was more about seeing all the gifts a person like Kelly brought into this world. The love between her and her brother floored me. FLOORED ME. I never cried so hard. He wanted so badly to "save" her, a Superman complex I also have when it comes to my family especially, that he ruined his own relationships to protect her. Something he also had to learn about himself and look at, ultimately. The way that story is told here, is so touching and bold and raw, it forever changed and moved me. I cannot recommend this movie enough. I've told people about it for years! Please see it. Please spread the word. Allow your mind and heart to be opened up, because that is what it will do, guaranteed! Bravo to all involved ! Brave to brave, sweet Kelly and Brian!
Steam Room Stories: The Movie! (2019)
I love JC Calciano's films
I've been a fan of JC for some time, because he takes rom com staples and converts them into LGBTQ friendly stories. And with Steam Room Stories the movie, he's done it again. I think it's so important because it brings an audience in who may never go and see an LGBTQ film and makes it accessible to them, much like Love Simon did. How many times have we seen this kind of humor reserved only for an Adam Sandler type film and the audience that would normally watch them? Yes it's absurdist, but that's the point. It's got the spirit of Cry Baby or Revenge of the nerds and it knows what it is. Which makes it so much fun. We aren't watching this for Oscar award winning material. We are watching it to escape and have fun and smile, and I did just that while watching the film. It appeals to the masses while giving you a few good laughs, John Waters style!
eCupid (2011)
Enjoyable, funny, and accessible!
I really enjoyed Ecupid, because I found it was a very universal story that any man or woman has gone through and that is what made it so enjoyable and accessible, especially being a gay romantic comedy.
I think what JC does with his films is break down stereotypes or even takes typical in your face stereotypes and turns them on their heads. You could have plugged in Jennifer Aniston into one half of the leading couple and you would have had a mainstream romantic comedy. I think that is what America needs to be able to start having access to. Movies don't have to be all about sex or violence or tragedy. This is escapist entertainment at it's best.
That, to me, is what JC is setting out to do, and he does it really well! You can call me bias, but I know for a fact that you could sit and watch this film with your own family and not have to worry about anything inappropriate coming up. And you can count on them having a good time, and maybe opening their own minds up a little. I thought the film as a whole was cute and funny and had a great lesson at the end. It's nice to see stories about love, whether they're between a man and man, a man and a woman, or a woman and a woman.
In the end, you're hoping for the guys to stay together. It's not for cynical, snooty, bitter people. It's a simple, beautiful story for people who still believe in the notion of true love. I highly recommend it!
