Blue Velvet (1986)
Provocative and perversive, but no substance.
I don't know about 1986, but this steaming pile certainly doesn't carry much merit in 2024. It's pretty obvious it was just an outlet for Lynch's sadistic inner-freak, wrapped in a low-budget Hitchcockian style. Hardly innovative. It's like he woke up from a weird dream and turned it into 2 hours of cringe-worthy garbage for someone else to painfully endure. Everything about it, from the plot to the dialogue to the sets, was horribly contrived. Worst of all, it has ruined Roy Orbison's In Dreams for me. I couldn't wait for this movie to be over.
Redeeming qualities: some interesting, arty composition... And that's it. Too senselessly weird, unrealistic, and boring for me otherwise.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour: Sand Job (2022)
Waste of time
Sorry lads, I've loved mostly everything you do but how did you manage to make one of the most boring landscapes on the planet, even more boring? I don't know what I'm even watching anymore. It's all staged and contrived... almost insulting the audience, an audience who wants substance! This episode was completely silly, unnecessary, not funny, and ultimately, just painfully boring. Like the endless sands of the Sahara.
Here's the thing. You have this presumably huge budget for these last few episodes, and this is what you choose to do with it? The same road trip with the same breakdowns and the same cheesy modifications and the same silly "challenges?" It's not what people want to see. Really hope the Zimbabwe episode redeems the series and lays it to rest with some respect.
Otherwise thanks for the good times, and best of luck in future endeavors.
Do the Right Thing (1989)
What Right Thing?
The "message," if there is one, is so mixed and confusing by the end that it left me really disliking a movie that was great for the first 1.5 hrs. I just can't wrap my head around what Spike Lee did in the last half hour; it simply makes black people look bad. And barbaric, and hypocritical, and petty. Sal is made to seem like a decent guy with respect for the neighborhood, and then gets completely screwed, by the black guy he was helping the whole time. What?! The Mookie character is clearly shown as a deadbeat dad and a lazy employee who cheats Sal by taking showers on the clock. And in the end he has the nerve to ask for his pay after being the person responsible for the complete destruction of everything Sal ever worked hard for? WHAT?! How can anyone honestly sympathize with him (the black guy, over the white guy). It doesn't make sense, it creates MORE racism, and I have a suspicion Spike Lee knows that and just made a confusing, problematic, and ultimately inciteful ending on purpose, because that's what he thinks will win him an Oscar.
I really did like the first half of the movie. Good style, well-crafted dialogue, interesting characters... It's a shame it ended so... wrong.
Heathers (1988)
Cult classic? Wait... what?
Here's my damage. Even as a blatant satire, Heathers just didn't work. In fact, it was an absolute mess of a movie. They took a promising premise/concept and turned it into an asinine plot with gaping holes, ridiculous inconsistencies, and terribly written dialogue. It ends up being an overly campy B movie, at best. Every line out of JD was lame over the top pretentiousness. But not funny like it could've been. Just drek. To make matters worse, just add Christian Slater's acting (aka his best Jack Nicholson impersonation). Script-wise, barely any motive was shown for any of the characters, and there were so many "wait... what?" moments I lost count.. The big conflict was the Heathers pranked a fat girl with a note? How evil! They obviously deserved to be murdered. Oh... is that part of the satire? Um ok.... and JD was a psychopath because... his mom died in a construction accident. Ummm, that's it? Then there was full blown botched continuity - as in where did Veronica get the gun at the end? She just... had it all of a sudden? And whatever happened to the Betty subplot? She straight up disappeared halfway through, never to be seen again. Just an absolute train wreck of a movie and I'm utterly shocked people like it as much as they do. They must have seen it when they were younger, thinking less critically, and just grew attached to the nostalgia it evokes and/or the attractive, nascent cast. There's no deep meaning behind this flick, it's just black comedy... minus the comedy. And no way this film is in the same conversation as actual quality satires like Spinal Tap, Life of Brian, Thank You for Smoking, et al. I had to FORCE myself to finish watching Heathers it was so very.
Ted Lasso: No Weddings and a Funeral (2021)
What a drag
This show took a wrong turn this season. I couldn't care less about these contrived therapy sessions. So boring! What happened to the comedy? The charm? It's long gone and replaced by cringy acting and bad storylines.
Fresh Off the Boat (2015)
Fresh and funny
Series started off shaky but it really hit its stride on the back 9 and became a top shelf sitcom. Love the 90s/new millennium throwback and the hip hop angle. Great cast of characters. Not politically correct but woke at the same time. Lots of genuinely funny moments. Evan needs his own show. Fresh off the Boat went out on top!
Modern Family: Putting Down Roots (2018)
Funniest episode so far in season 10
And one of the funniest of the whole series. Just rapid-fire hilarity at some points, I could barely catch my breath. Phil shines as usual but Sarah Hyland (Haley) is really showing some range and great comedic acting. Loved this episode!
Jessica Jones (2015)
Waste of Time
By the end of season 2 I just wanted every character on this show to die. I hated them all with a passion. Horrible story, terrible acting, and maybe one of the most annoying wastes of time I've ever experienced. At some I just kept watching just to see how bad it would continue to get. And I wasn't disappointed. Except not everyone dies at the end, which is too bad.
