Queen (2013)
Tremendously Bad Script
I was one of the victims of good reviews of this movie. After watching it, I felt happy to come out alive. Queen has several script problems. I can't just forgive it. Here are some things that made me say "oh, but wait!":
1. Rani wears a tank top and gets disgusted by it. Yet she takes her selfie and that at once mistakenly lands on her ex fiancé's phone. If she is so disgusted by what she wore then why send its picture to anyone at all?
2. Okay we get that Vijaylaxmi spends time with hotel guests. She is overly loud in the room, yet she tells Rani to not tell this to the manager.
3. In Amsterdam, her room is reserved at a hostel. Like really? Couples especially honeymooners don't book room in a hostel because everyone knows over there you aren't gonna get queen bed and that rooms always have roommates. And yes, after rejecting it suddenly Rani comes to know all hotels are booked in Amsterdam. That always happens in our Indian films.
4. Russian guy was shown staring at Rani, but his love story suddenly was not important at all. Why then even show them together in a special way?
5. Why does he feel so angry that he has to draw pictures on the wall?
6. Which person kisses a stranger just to prove "mere bharat mahan hai"?
7. Rani's fiancé begins to chase her back because he saw a picture of her wearing a tank top. That says he was a pervert. Then why does he suddenly turn Srk like lover looking for her in cities for days and then saying passionate lines? It made me sympathetic to his character. Don't blame me. Its just how he was asked to act.
8. Why would a cop force a foreign looking person to drive when she is showing nervousness about it?
9. Someone who can speak English and has eyes can't understand that she is in an adult store. But previously, she recognizes condoms.
10. Once back she says saw Eifle tower all alone. Did the director forget that she visits it twice and the last time she was with Vijaylaxmi? It feels like a movie made from the script of Ekta kapoor's soap opera.
11. The director thinks drinking, wearing skimpy clothes, dancing like crazy all night, enjoying time at a stripper club and kissing strangers are all signs of a woman getting her freedom.
There is nothing "different" about this movie. It just utilizes the ideas already activated by Subhash Ghai, Karan Johar, Bharat kumar and others in their films. Some scenes are overly useless and long. I felt suffocated by them. And yes, there is no story in the movie. It is based on incidents which can't even promise to stay in the memory. It is funny that just because it was not promoted as a masala film, people decided to let go of all the illogical stuffs shown in it.
Chennai Express (2013)
Laughter Ride: Solid Entertainment!
Speed is the perfect word that describes Chennai Express. It is fun and entertaining. The film has no time for dull moments, for it does not stop anywhere. I won't tell its summary or story. However, its one scene related to DDLJ's train sequence can't simply leave my mind. It's funny as hell with the biggest twist that no one ever thought of before. There you go, I said it. The movie actually has more twists and turns that consist of full on comedy. Even the scary villains showed it perfectly well.
Now here are the things that wowed me about the movie. Srk: His comic timing was marvelous. But even more than that I was impressed by the amount of hard work he did for the action scenes. Deepika: No one could do the character of Meena better than her. She truly now is a professional actress who does not need to hide her weakness with short clothes and makeup. The goondas: They did have fewer lines to say, but their expressions were superb. Without them, this movie would have been dull. Editing: It's of highest quality and very visible with all the vfx work. It proved that Bollywood is now progressing aggressively. Story: I did not want it to end. I am glad that Rohet Shetty gave time for the love to blossom between Srk and Deepika.
I will go to watch Chennai Express again and even buy the disc once it's available. Private movie collection would be incomplete without it.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Sweet, Simple and Realistic
After a long time, I watched something that has depth. I was quite disappointed by Yash Chopra's Veer Zara due to the fact that its characters and relationships were underdeveloped. But in Jab Tak Hai Jaan things are totally different. After watching it, I understood why Mr Yash Chopra was so satisfied with its content. I am not going to give the story here as I believe other users already talked about it here. So let me tell you about what I thought about the film.
There is a lot of emotion in the entire plot. It's very easy to sympathize with each character. Throughout the 3 hours of the movie, Yash Chopra basically shows different perspectives of love. But I do feel the ultimate scapegoat here has been Srk. There is not a single moment when tears won't fall for him. He gets played around in the beginning and then again after a few twists and turns, he is again the scapegoat. Performance wise, he is the best in the film. As for the other ladies, each is different from the other. One (Kat) is an intense believer of God. She is modern, but certain things which happen with her turn her outlook on life extremely conservative. Then there is Anushka who is way too open minded and treats relationships like products that once used can be thrown out. She is basically today's girl who likes to chase what she can't have while pushing away those who really love her. Kat's mom, Nitu Singh also has a short narrative love story. This is different from what is between Srk and Kat, but somehow is significant for the characters. The central theme for everyone though is love which brings changes to lives of characters in the movie.
I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking to feel relaxed while getting entertained. At least this year, it is the best that Indian film industry has come up with.
Cocktail (2012)
Dragging the age old Indian film concept
First fool around as much as you can and then settle down for a nice girl. How many times do we have to watch this? There is nothing good Cocktail really offers. I do not even need to give summary of the story. Everything we already watched before. Plus, the ending is way too predictable. Saif is in his same boring role of a player. He was once quite good at playing this character, but now there is something wrong with his face. Sure he looks old. There is nothing wrong with this. Only thing is that his face now has some kind of wildness and that makes him perfect for darker roles.
The second most irritating character was Deepika's. Yes, she is a party girl and personally she did well at portraying it. But the director went overboard with it. Sometimes I felt as if she went to clubs just because it was her real job and for dancing and drinking she got paid hourly. There was also less development in her role. We only get to hear the reason behind her wild lifestyle, but get to see nothing of it. The savior in the film is the new girl, Diana Penty. She is sweet, cute and innocent. More of Dimple was necessary. Unfortunately, she is only minute's guest.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. It's simply because it has nothing unique.
