Waffle Street (2015)
Meh !
This movie is bad bad bad. The actng is strained and awkward. It really pains me when you can actually detect people saying their lines. And this trait is not just the main characters, but the entire cast. The story, albeit, cute, is not very believable. Now we get to the cinematography and camera work. I am not a fan of the hand camera technique. I find it unclean,, disruptive. When you are taken away from following the story by trying to get past the bad camera work. The set were cliché, and not very well thought out. I watched this film to the very end hoping it would either improve or have a good ending I am disappointed to tell you, it had neither
The Good Neighbor (2016)
Not a very believable premise
To enjoy this movie you will have to have "your tongue in cheek". Generally this is a "TEEN MOVIE" Where everyone over 35 is stupid. Lets take the self slamming screen door. Any device added to a screen door would be easily discovered, but of course the Harold is too ignorant to notice. And the same again with the moonlight sonata scenario. After 20 minutes, I wanted to turn it off. However, I wanted to give an accurate analysis of this movie. And because, the suspense of wondering what Harold was hiding in the basement. And why are the Witness teens, using a regular hand-held video camera, to record the video. Most would use a HD-DVR. In the scene where the camera falls, it appears that they are stand-alone cameras, meaning, they are not hardwired to anything. This also means they must be battery powered. And apparently these batteries last for weeks. Well anyone whose had a GoPro, knows that cams are battery power hogs. Why is it, that characters in movies such as this, never turn the lights on.. Reminds me of "X-Files" When Harold kills himself, a discussion ensues about proving that he killed himself. not really remembering that they have the act of suicide on probably 3 cameras. The acting in this movie is also less than stellar, wooden. As far as the story goes, the ending is not bad.
Daddy's Home (2015)
Funny, other than the rampant product placement
This is a pretty typical Will Ferrel movie. The premise is a little over-used, but works here. I do think it is very funny. Albeit, cliché'. But my eyes roll with the one problem with it. Can anyone say "Product Placement". There is a lot in this one. To the point where it interferes with the story line. I think with the price of movies now-a- days, the extra money the production company make with the product placement is ...well enough already.. "Ford" "Miracle Whip" "ABM" "iFit" "Chevron" "Evamor" "Indian Motorcycle" "Cinnabon" "Delta Airlines" One of the first and last lines in the movies are about how good the Ford Flex is for families.. , being so roomy and all.. "Please!".
The Lotus Eaters (1993)
Authentic BC Coastal life in the 60's
So I had heard about this movie and had been wanting to see it for quite some time however being that I could never find it as a rental.. I never had the opportunity. I have lived on the west coast nearly all my life and I find this movie extremely accurate. Especially the cinematography and the school scenes. I think the only small inaccuracy may be the accepting nature of the locals to Wiccan culture, being that back then we were all quite ignorant to it. I do not want to spoil the film but I will say it is quite predictable. However it is not cliché'. This movie also does not smack of typical Canadian movie quality as I find that most Canadian movies do. And what I mean by that is that you should never be able to detect that the movie is Canadian made, because it is low quality and cheesy dialog. This movie somehow avoids that distinction. This movie is reminiscent of the movie "Juno" with a touch of the TV show "The Beachcombers" in it's simplicity and honest charm.
