Oi gabroi tis Eftyhias (2015)
A disgrace to the original
It's beyond belief how bad is this remake. Although it closely follows the context of the original movie, it constantly seems as if the actors just read through the dialogue, without any sentiment or feeling. The lines, although almost identical as in the original, do not produce any laughs at all. All actors seem to be out of place, as if there is no director present. Heavily disappointing effort.
Heart of the Alien (1994)
Strong sequel to an amazing video game
This game is the sequel to the amazing Another World game, and directly continues right after the events of the first game.
The visuals are well crafted, the plot is interesting, and the gameplay is smooth, although not innovative, and rather short, with a bit of clunky controls. Overall, the game follows/copies the mechanics/ideas of the first entry.
Surely it didn't have the impact of the first one, mainly due to limited distribution, but still it is definitely worth to give it a shot, especially if you loved the first story, and want to know what happens next.
Us (2019)
Jordan Peele...the next M.Night Shyamalan?
Really wanted to like it, and partially did. Good elements of acting, atmosphere, and suspense. But too many ideas brought together, and ultimately not well executed.
Red Dead Redemption (2010)
Probably the best video game of all-time...
...and i consider myself a gaming veteran, owning a Spectrum+2, an Amiga, all four PSs etc. This game is a visual as well as an emotional "ride" of the last days of the West. The plot is not very unique but incredibly well crafted, the characters are properly developed, and the overall mission structure absorbs even those (like me) who are not fond of cowboy themed games or open world games.Heck, even the bugs seem to have been appropriately placed in the game! When you ride on the top of the Grand Canyonesque mountains, just you and your beloved horse, watching the sun dawn, you don't just play, you feel. I consider this game an experience, compared only with movie masterpieces. After playing along with John Marston, i started watching movies like Butch Cassidy, Wild Bunch etc. from another perspective. Seek for the Game of theyear edition, as it includes the funny, yet satisfying "undead nightmare" DLC. Definitely 10/10.
Frozen (2013)
Clearly one of the most overrated animated films of all-time
I generally love animated films (either long or short ones), and the gross sales of this particular Disney film, along with its IMDb rate (8.0) have made me greatly anticipating this one. Unfortunately, i was very disappointed. I admit that the musical aspect of the film is nicely crafted, and the characters are lovable and nicely designed. But, the movie lacks originality, lacks sense of humor (only the reindeer sort of saves the day), and the plot is somewhat shallow. Everything seems to be just a reproduction of older ideas and characters. I do not want to give away any plot spoilers, so instead i will list more than a dozen of animated movies that easily surpass this one: Toy Story 1-2-3 Shrek 1-2 Finding Nemo Wall-e Incredibles Ice Age 1-2 Wreck it Ralph Antz Despicable me 1 Monsters inc. So, i strongly believe that its enormous worldwide gross sales achievement is probably due to good timing and publicity, and not due to its overall quality. 6,5/10 for me.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Wait, what???8,1 out of 10?yeah right!!
ATTENTION: SPOILERS!
I was really disappointed with the execution of this film, so i decided to lay down the reasons why:
The trailer prepares you for something epic, but the actual film is not that epic at all. Major events happen(cities destroyed, Klingon war is on the verge), but only USS enterprise is there, so not so much epicness here. The director focuses on showing off the 3D capabilities, without giving attention to character development and motives. Major characters just appear on screen (especially Bones), shouting their usual tag lines, and then leave the screen. Khan easily guns down the Starfleet Commanding offices without any defense to stand against him.OK, maybe he had agreed the whole thing with the admiral, but then why went into all that trouble to save the young girl from the secret office clerk? he had an alliance with the Head of the Starfleet for god's shake. And why the NCC-1701 is deep down in the ocean, on the Nibiru mission? Isn't the fleet vessels usually in orbit?don' tell me, I already know the answer, just to show off the graphic capabilities.
As a result, we are denied the famous 5-year mission, the voyage, the exploration, all that is the true spirit of Star Trek(why do it in the 2nd installment, when you can delay it, like the Lost series). Instead we get a revenge scenario. OK, excuse me here, but since the film decided to go that way, it clashes with "Wrath of Khan" and loses. The director had a chance to really blow us off by killing the captain for the shake of his crew, but decided not to. For every one who may disagree with this point, what if the film ended with a bar sequence where a young cadet is impaled through the heart? The timeline has been already distorted, so there is no reason why not.
Anyway, just to be clear with this, i loved Star Trek: the future begins!!it had a far more complex scenario, but still maintained a great balance between action sequences and character interaction.
Overall, this is a nice action sci-fi film that appeals to the masses (ticket sales is proof of this), but it is without a Star Trek heart in it.
PS: I haven't read any related forums, so maybe some of my questions have been already answered, but i do not want to read forums to understand films.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
If Sci-fi is religion, this is its greatest altar!!
Actually the voting score for this TV series goes is always X out of X like an mathematical equation, so you can try any number you like, the result will always be the same!
So, do i really need to write down the reasons why this is the greatest sci-fi TV series of all time, and one of the best TV series ever? OK, if you insist, i will make it so (reasons are placed in no particular order except the first which is always in place one):
Picard, nuff said. Data, nuff said. Riker, nuff said. Borg, nuff said. Inner Light, nuff said. Q, nuff said. The Best of Both Worlds, nuff said. Yesterday's Enterprise, nuff said. All Good Things, nuff said.
Now that i think of it, lose all aforementioned reasons. Star Trek TNG, nuff said!!
PS. sorry for the repeated use of the "nuff said" expression, but i didn't have a choice!!
Fight Club (1999)
Yes, it is actually the best movie ever made!
I know that i will disappoint you, but i won;t make an effort to justify the title of this review! I know lots of people that do not seem to be captivated by the specific film, its concept, or it characters. And to be honest, i do not want to persuade them over this!!! I want this movie not to be liked by everyone(like Shawshank Redemption for example). I want this movie for myself!!
I consider this movie as one that you will like it for your own unique reasons, and this is its true power. There is no point in giving you reasons for justifying my view, as it may differ from yours.
I have read the book after watching the film, and i must say that Fincher made a hell of a job to materialize on screen a book not so easy to be adapted (it is not Dan Brown if you know what i mean). I dare to say that we have here one of those rare occasions that the movie adaptation surpasses the book itself.
Sherlock (2010)
Without doubt one of the best TV series ever!
You may find my voting score rather exaggerated, but i challenge you to watch this mini series, and judge for yourselves.
I am not a hard core fan of the character, so some may not like this modern adaptation. For me it worked liked a charm! The script is written in such way that constantly builds up tension and pace. Location and technology are nicely embedded in the story. Both actors perform greatly as the famous duo, but my favorite episode is the one with the breathtaking Lara Pulver. I do not want to reveal anything, so i will only suggest to pay attention to every detail in this episode (this probably goes for all episodes). The overall result is highly captivating.
I must express my gratitude to the producers because they have not chosen the easy and more profit-driven way to materialize the whole concept. That is, they did not made 30 minute episodes or 20-25 episodes per season etc. Instead, they have given us one hour and a half episodes, and only three per season, so they haven't sacrificed the characters and the plot over costs, budgets etc.
I cross my fingers that the series will continue over the years (a view that Mr. Cumberbatch has expressed in a recent interview).
Cool Hand Luke (1967)
All time classic!!!
I was not aware of this movie until recently, and i watched it by accident on TV. I was astonished, period. Great scenario, great acting, great direction, what more to say! Paul Newman is at his best, and so is George Kennedy! Dennis Hopper holds a small part but is quite good. The movie captures you from the first minute till the last. And you are easily attached with the characters. i really want to describe many scenes that i consider magnificent, but i respect the no spoiler rule, so i would just say that the scene with the eggs is more than hilarious!! Overall, i highly recommend it obviously! For your info, unlike what others might say, this is not so much like the Great Escape. It is far more emotional and less funny!
