Single White Female (1992)
SWF = Stinking Worthless Film
This film was such a wasted few hours of my life. The plot was absolutely terrible. An obsessive lesbian-esquire stalker girl who destroys her flatmates life? To begin with, the whole my fiancé cheated with his ex-wife beginning was terrible. You pray and pray for her to just dump him, because honestly, why would you take such scum back? and then she does? Well, I honestly had no sympathy for her after that. The back story for Leighs character was weak, and why she would choose weak and pathetic Fonda's character to obsess over, I really don't know. I cheered when Fonda's fiancé was killed, and ended up hating both Leigh and Fonda's pitiful characters. The film was far too focused on sex, and it was far too male orientated erotica. To sum up, the film was poorly executed, think made for TV movie.
Empire Records (1995)
Absolutely Brilliant
This film is right up there in my top 100 movies (I find it hard to narrow down into a top 10!). Empire Records has everything: the music, great and likable characters, comedy, romance and drama. All the actors are superb, and many of them I find still don't get the credit they deserve. One of Liv Taylor's best performances to date, and one of Renee Zellweger's first but best roles. I could name the rest of the cast too, because they are equally or even more brilliant than those mentioned, lets just say there is a huge diversity in character, yet they all seem to have something in common. They all love their job, and who wouldn't! Believe me, when you watch this film, you will be wishing you too worked at Empire. This quirky, original movie, is one I can guarantee you will love, so give it a watch. The more times you watch, the more you get hooked.
Elizabethtown (2005)
Surprisingly, GREAT.
When this was advertised in the cinemas, I was doubtful, I had heard bad things, and the only thing that pushed me to buying a copy of the DVD on sale about a year ago was Cameron Crowe. Cameron Crowe, from my experience is a brilliant writer/director, and I can honestly say I have loved ALL of his movies. When I finally sat down to watch the movie last night, I was surprised at how much I fell in love with it. First of all, I was skeptical at the idea of a blossoming relationship between Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom. However, Kirsten's character was completely lovable, and she played it to perfection. Orlando was equally brilliant, and even though his wavering American/British accent was occasionally distracting, you forgave him due to his brilliant portrayal of Drew. In the true spirit of Cameron Crowe films, it was both quirky, funny and dramatic. Yes, occasionally you question whether it is plausible, but is it really any more plausible than most of his films? (Say Anything..? Almost Famous??). The importance of a film is entertainment, is it not? And this sucked you in, it made you feel part of the film, you honestly wanted Drew and Claire to end up together. Watching this film feeling slightly depressed may have helped, but by the end I to had realized the true meaning of life, and just like Drew, we both ended with a sense of self discovery. The film is just as brilliant (well almost) as Cameron's other films, in fact I likes it ten times better to Jerry Maguire. It's not your ordinary soppy love story, its interesting, its challenging and it leaves you questioning your priorities. Give it a go, and you will NOT be disappointed.
Dazed and Confused (1993)
One Of My Personal Favourites
Dazed and Confused is one of the best movies of its genre, if not one of the best movies ever created. It features no real storyline; high school kids last day of school for the summer in 1976, the seniors plan to welcome the new freshman to high school with either a good beating or humiliation. However, the actors are superb, ones that particularly stand out are Rory Cochrane and Jason London. It has many great comic moments and memorable quotes and the soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks ever featured in a movie. It is one movie that I can watch over and over and never bore of, the amount of times the word "man" is mentioned is almost uncountable.. but this just adds to the beauty of the movie. I have shown many of my friends this film, and not one of them has not liked it, this is one movie it's hard to hate, and easy to love. A cult classic, and one I will treasure for many years to come.
