Shrinking (2023)
Bill Lawrence - The Man Who Never Gets It Wrong
It's pretty spectacular, what Bill has been able to accomplish with his amazing writing staff and crew in Scrubs, then Ted Lasso, and now with Shrinking.
Full credit to Brett Goldstein & of course Jason Segel for the cut-to-cut tight writing that is consistent in every single episode. Shrinking does a great job of showing us the many ways in which people try to process grief and the great things that they are capable of doing when they're grieving, but also the mistakes that they are equally capable of making.
The storyline is not at all sporadic and makes good use of its time. While I wish the soundtrack was a bit more prominent like in Scrubs, I can appreciate that this show is its own flavour and fits the vibe.
Perhaps the only thing that not everyone can relate to is that this is largely occurring within the setting of a principal cast of almost all economically affluent characters, however, the central emotional and social themes are so prominently featured with a perfect balance of raw emotion and lighthearted banter, that is makes for a very attractive meal.
I would not recommend watching this show episodically; its true value is met when you binge the entire first season in one go.
Can't wait for more.
Every cast member here is at their best. Everyone, even the minor cast members who make only the briefest of appearances.
Well done. 10/10.
Sam Morril: Same Time Tomorrow (2022)
Well written, but fantastically executed
If you're a real comedy nerd, you know about Sam. He's been on the road for at least a decade (?), 2 Comedy Central specials, 1 Peak-pandemic YouTube special, and after so many late night appearances.... A Netflix Special.
Sam walks us fans through his material writing process on the We Might Be Drunk Podcast with Mark Normand, and it is incredibly satisfying to see his best work come to fruition. The writing style does leverage classic comedy tropes like the bait and switch "Switcheroo", the callback, etc., but at the same time, the material is fresh, relevant, and it pushes the edge, which is exactly what comedy is supposed to be about.
Very satisfying. Very funny. Incredibly well delivered. And bonus - you get to witness some cool crowdwork as well
When's the next one, "I tell ya!" .
The Comey Rule (2020)
Watergate was small potatoes compared to this
Regardless of which aisle one places themselves in, on the American political spectrum, one cannot deny after having watched this, that it is an objective and plainly laid out depiction of what happened during Director Comey's time at the FBI.
The entire ensemble cast puts in fantastic performances in every frame. There doesn't seem to be an overdramatization or any kind of spin here.
It is merely what happened.
The beauty of this 2-episode feature is that it makes you pause at several stages and say to yourself, "What would I have done in Comey's position?"
Watch it. It is so disturbing that Watergate seems like small potatoes compared to what happened since 2015.
Jack Whitehall: At Large (2017)
Quite decent and filled with moments of brilliance
I've not been a huge fan of Jack Whitehall in his TV performances but as a stand-up comedian he isn't bad at all!
A perfect mix of haberdashery, prop-based humour, crass stories and honest experiences which have a comical take.
Worth a watch!
