Aarya (2020)
Powerful casting
Sushmita Sen has been picking up all the bravado for this web-series. However, the entire cast proves to be a powerful ensemble and instrumental in providing the story the edge it required to remain engaging until the very end. The script and music, specially the Gita- themed verses- adds to the quality.
I will be eagerly waiting for the sequel.
RadhaKrishn (2018)
Superb storytelling
One of the best Indian TV Shows in recent times, Radhakrishn is a visual extravaganza and an adorable retelling of Lord Krishna's time in Barsana. The show is doing everything right and has the perfect cast.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
A thoroughly engaging first half
The Darjeeling limited is one of the hidden gems that are seldom quoted among epic movies of this genre. In a way, it's brilliant in the portrayal of a journey three brothers undertake in the spiritual heartland of North India. I would like to thank the director for not making the Indian characters spew words in laughable accents. The movie remains true to Indian culture, and borrows heavily from Satyajit Ray movies. There are movie tropes and back ground scores that pay homage to the legendary director. Apart from that, the Hare Krishna culture, rural India and Sikh practices are also shown beautifully. However the film tatters to make a meaningful ending. A highly enjoyable first half ,sadly, doesn't find a fitting conclusion.
The Comedian (2016)
De Niro amazes again
I thought the movie was excellent. It wonderfully captures the day to day life of stand up comedians, their inner circles and the pros and cons of the profession.
De Niro carries the movie on his own and Leslie Mann adds charm to it in her own imitable way.
Some of the lines were funny, but if I was looking for a fun galore, I would be watching Comedy Central.
A Dog's Purpose (2017)
Couldn't have been done better
I would like to thank the makers of this movie for taking a chance on a script that was never gonna be a commercial roller coaster. Its laudable to create art for art's sake and the topic could not have been more humane.
If you've ever had a pet- a dog, or cat, or even a bird, you'll relate to this movie. The script is immaculate, and often proves to be a tearjerker.I will refrain from giving away any spoiler, but go watch with children and family. You'll enjoy this one.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)
A reflection on war
Billy comes home for two weeks during Iraq War,and his platoon "Bravo" is paraded everywhere to show America what true heroes are. I can safely say this without any spoilers. The movie is not out and out a war movie, or anti-war movie, rather it's a discourse on life in the time of war. How families are affected, how priorities change, how war changes the person in and out. I think Joe Alwyn and Garrett Hedlund did a fine job. In his brief role, Vin Diesel quotes Lord Krishna, "Avatar of the supreme deity Vishnu." Then he gives a transcendent smile and it evokes a scene from the great epic Mahabharata. It also sets the tone of the movie pivoting around the oft used phrase "The bullet has already been fired." to which Billy replies "I am ready,Sarge."
The movie also diligently sketches out how the people in general see the war and treats its heroes. But only the soldiers know how thin the lines are drawn in war-between heroism and sacrilege.
Thank you Mr.Ang Lee,for such a mature work.
The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)
Story of a great mind
Ramanujan is a legend in India, but most Indians know his name, his field of expertise and the story of the ramanujan number-1729.Few have read up his life story or his works and even fewer can gauge his genius till date. But this is not a review of the mathematician,it's a review of a movie based on his life. That,we can comprehend and judge. Therefore,it is quite fitting that the movie refuses to delve only in the intricacies and complexities of mathematics and venture further into his life as poor Iyengar Vaishnava brahmin before bringing him up as a genius level intellect striving hard to prove his work as a gauche among cambridge's finest. One of the review that says this movie tries to depict that such success can stem only from divine help.Well, this is not the case. The movie rather shows that even someone so deeply rooted in one of the fundamental branches of science can be a devotee of the Lord and carry a scientific approach of the highest level. That Ramanujan says he got all his baffling intuition because of his prayers to Lord Vishnu and Devi Namagiri isn't a religious fervor, but an innate humility on his part to refuse that he was by himself alone, capable of shining light on all the wisdom that had eluded mankind before him.Readers of Bhagavat Gita are well aware of that kind of ideology.Moving past, the background score mainly with flute is a great throwback to the early acts from life of pi and ending score of the highly acclaimed animated short film-Sanjay's super team. The cultural clash and intolerance shown in the movie is also not unnecessary as it truly depicts the sociopolitical picture of the early 20th century. One cannot help wonder what the great mathematician would have been capable of if he wasn't taken so early.
Regarding individual performances,Jeremy Irons reigns supreme as Professor Hardy, and Toby Jones is refreshing in his small role as Professor Littlewood.Dev Patel does justice to his role, and holds his ground amidst such stalwarts.I would have rated this film 9,but full respect to the director for braving to take up a relatively unknown figure as a subject for his movie. So,a perfect 10!
