All Over the Guy (2001)
Finally a movie that doesn't pander or stereotype gay men
I was pleasantly surprised about this movie. It was not full of gay stereotypes and clichés, in fact at times countered them, and yet I was not feeling sorry for the plight of love lorn gay men. Simply,it was about the struggles of relationships, both gay and straight, and the musings: if you did the right thing on the date, if you said or acted in an off putting manner. It addressed the issues of lack of communication and then brutal honesty, misunderstandings on not being able to commit, fear to communicate honestly of what is expected and needed out of relationship. The movie portrays the hard road of getting to know if you have the chemistry, friendship, sex appeal, sex, etc that all can make or break the fragile act of getting to know another. The acting was amazing. The camera angles captured the expressions of all the characters and their emotions of angst, anger, fear, joy, relief, trust, revelation. In the opening scenes of a first date the fear in the eyes of one of the characters was visceral. The use of colors; rust browns and blues, in clothing, sets, in various hues and exposures contributed to beauty and intimacy. The use of apartment walls and windows to follow the characters was neat and creative. So this isn't any longer, I just love the actors, the story, and camera work. It made it to my very picky "own" movie library. It is one of the best romantic comedies I have watched.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
I found this tiresome
Without spoiling anything other than the American military is part of the expedtion to Skull Island, I found their participation tiresome. The acting is excellent, great cast, great photography, but I made it 20 minutes or so in. Does it not bother anyone, our military to be depicted making rash, irresponsible, unpredictable, undisciplined, untrained, illogical decisions in crisis? We are asked to believe the typical preachy, Hollywood, commentary and crap, if our top notch, best trained military react like they do in this movie, we are doomed. I was embarrassed for the actors.
Heartland (2007)
gay adult back to help family farm examines traditional values with changing modern situations
a very tender, thoughtful, if simple rendering of a few themes with excellent believable cast, would make a wonderful full length movie. a movie of reconciliation of the present from a past walked away from till hurled back in to it as a mature adult. it is short with an intense ending. being gay and having been brought up and then leaving the country I felt the scenario was very feasible. I thought film quality was welcome in a low budget film. It also opened up questions of what defines a family and also bridged homespun family loyalties and values into how they affect and fashion a new generation struggling to make new traditions and relationships.
