Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Outside (2022)
Good but feels familiar
I enjoyed this episode as it feeds into our insecurities and our desires of wanting to fit in.
I would have scored it higher but it feels reminiscent of something I have already seen but I cannot put my finger on exactly what it is.
Kate Micucci carries this episode perfectly as she is 99% of the focus of the whole story. I found myself very engrossed in her character arch.
Her husband played by Martin Starr is an excellent character first supportive, then worried and finally scared.
This is one of the better episodes of the series and is very reminiscent of a Tales of the Unexpected episode, and I mean that as a compliment.
The Unheard (2023)
I don't know why or what happened
When I read the synopsis of this film I was really interested as it reminded me of The Eye (2002) where a woman gets an eye transplant and can see ghosts.
I've just finished watching this and the only thing i know for sure is that the epilepsy warnings should be taken notice of as there are some serious strobe scenes in the film.
For everything else i have no idea what was going on, why the killer was killing, what the noise was and where it was coming from.
I can honestly say this was perhaps the most confusing film I have ever watched. Hopefully someone will explain it one day on YouTube or Wikipedia with a plot outline because i really need it.
A Wounded Fawn (2022)
An art film released to the general public
This very much reminded me of the series "Tales of the Unexpected".
I think it would have made a very good 1 hour episode of an anthology series but a full film it was hard going.
I got confused over what was in his head over what was real, who was still alive and who was dead.
It's an interesting watch but I'm not sure everyone will see the artistic points put on show.
I wouldn't call it a true horror and there's very little suspense in the film. The end is just odd.
If you want nothing else to do and you like a art film with low budget special effects then you could do worse (now there is a recommendation).
