Gantumoote (2019)
Fantastic..
The 90s era is captured beautifully in this well made simple movie. The acting my main lead is just awesome, she played it with a lot of conviction and kept the portrayal very tasteful. Wish more Kannada moves are made with this honesty and passion.
Kirik Party (2016)
Genuinely entertaining..
This is one of the best Kannada movies have to offer in last few years.
It's very well envisioned and nicely crafted, all main characters are well etched and rounded. The redemption in the second half is one of the most brilliant writing you will see in a long time with Kannada cinema. The college life concept is kind of inspired by Premam (malayalam movie) but still it's well adapted with lot of deep well thought overtures.
Love Mocktail (2020)
Entertaining in parts..
This is a very below average movie if you are an avid cinema buff.
However for someone who speaks Kannada and grew up around bangalore/mysore, this will be entertaining.
The kids did a good job in the first act and that somehow keeps you invested in the main characters.
There is also HUGE problem with body shaming and blatant desire for a white skin.
Dia (2020)
Well intended..
This movie has a lot of high points decently done, it feels a bit stretchy in the second act and performances by male leads is just average.
It's a good attempt to bring back good old fashioned story telling back to Kannada cinema.
Kavaludaari (2019)
Honest attempt...but not quite there
This is a decent move and a very honest attempt at creating a good old fashioned cinema. However the plot is only interesting at the beginning but does not hold till the final reveal. The movie could have been a bit more crisp with sharper screenplay. Some of the parts are predictable and seem like 70s style presentation, especially Ananth nag's scenes with over the top acting.
Avane Srimannarayana (2019)
Overrated..but good effort
The movie is extremely long for no good reason, many not so important scenes are stretched. The title character is not very consistent and seems mix of popular characters from same genre.
The making is world class with a lot of attention to detail. But the problem lies in writing, the makers seem to have got self indulgent and carried away. For example a scene where the antagonist mouths his dialogues painfully slow to create a sense of artificial tension. This style has been seen before in Tarantino movies and aren't anywhere near same level. A romantic addition towards the end seems contrived.
That said, this is a novel effort for a Kannada production and needs to be supported. A word of caution for makers that writing an action fantasy is no easy job, and most of (not all) popular movies in this genre are best selling literary masterpieces .
