Rurôni Kenshin: Sai shûshô - The Beginning (2021)
It made the OVAs justice
So, they made it the way it should be done. Ruroni Kenshin: Sai shusho - The Beginning is a perfect score. I have no complains, nothing to point out as bad in this movie, it's just what it was suposed to be, the story of Battousai when he was a samurai. For those who didn't watched the OVAs, here it is: Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen.
It's the best movie of the franchise for sure, and couldn't be different, this is by far the best Kenshin's story, his roots, the unthinkable truth behind such kind character. I can't praise this movie more, i'm just too hyped. Just watch it and enjoy. And before I forget, THANK YOU, NETFLIX!
It's raining blood out there!
Vikings: King of Kings (2020)
The Trully King of Kings
Bjorn Ironside's legend is really incredible, I wasn't expecting that, especially from this first episode of S6 part 2. It's for sure one of the best episodes of the series if not the best and for sure the most emotional one, at least for me.
I must confess that I wasn't even remembering what happened last season before start watching it and oh boy, it caught me off guard! While the episode progressed, the tension and the doubt of Bjorn's death only raised. You never knew for sure if he was going to die or not, even though all things pointed to that first way.
Well, what can I say... I cried on that scene. Bjorn's death was for sure one of the biggest and most beaultifull ones in the history of cinema and I say that not only because it was technically well executed nor for the impact that his last gestures had into the enemy, but because I remembered all his tragectory, everything he had to pass since his childhood to get there and be the greatest king Norway ever had. Ragnar was huge on his own way, he was the first king of kings, but his son, also son of Lagertha the Shield Maiden was bigger in the end. He died believing in his gods, protecting his people and for that, Valhalla shall feast.
I just want to end this review pointing to you that his biggest fear in the end was not seeing his son's birth. And that says a lot about who he was.
Hail Bjorn Ironside! Hail Vikings! Skål!
3%: Capítulo 05: Pintura (2020)
Alvares family
After all the tension from the previous episodes, finally it's time to settle the fate of the Alvares family. It's not at all what I've expected, since Marco aways showed some degree of afection for his mother. But it is what it is. All that feeling is gone and we can finally rest a bit, enjoying the slow phase that only good writers can manage to do right.
It's beaultiful on it's own way without following any recipe. The consequences of the pulse explosion unwind drastically both the Alvares and the people on the Island. Very well done and explained.
I felt like commander Marcela was the real artist behind this episode, painting her canvas, actually, her family are all artists in some extent, her father was an architect and her son... well, he did his art on his own way.
Sergio (2020)
Not what we wanted, but what we needed
Sergio is a movie that we didn't asked for, but we actually needed it and i'll explain why. I bet you're one of the guys coming here because you wanted a political/diplomatic focused film, but let me tell you this:
You don't need it! And the movie doesn't care to give you that either. We are living in a pandemic time right now and before that, so many political conflicts all over the world, elections, threats, commercial warfare, you name it. Sometimes we need to avoid that a little, see life in a more humane perspective, maybe watching someone's personal story.
Sergio's not about some diplomatic genious and his achievements, but about his life, love and regrets before and while facing death. It's about the human lesson he gives us of how things should be handled in many perspectives; as a father, diplomat, lover, friend and leader. He did what he tought it was right and in the end, after everything crumbles, he's still loved and remembered to this day.
To see more about his diplomatic career, you can watch his documentary.
I liked very much the movie and for those who are complaining about his accent, you shouldn't, Sergio was a brazilian citizen. Also, congratulations to Wagner Moura and Ana de Armas for the excellent acting on this one, looking for more shows from both.
Bleach: Burîchu (2018)
Too many things different from the anime.
First of all I need to make it very clear that I've watched the anime and read the manga and back in 2005 I've got introduced in a fantasy world that would become one of the bests in anime history.
The plot, the osts, the characters and the comedy attached also the animation/art of Tite Kubo made me amused for so long.
All I can say is that this movie doesn't fulfill it's duty, wich is to replicate the first half of the first arc of the manga and anime. I'm saying with all my sincerity that this piece of work here is not entirely Bleach. And here are my reasons:
1- OST. Oh boy, the songs aren't here and worse, they got changed for some generic sound. It doesn't have any impact at all in the movie like it has in the anime.
2- The plot is almost completelly changed. ---SPOILER ALERT--- In the manga Ichigo do not return Rukia's powers and she is conducted by force to Soul Society in an emotional scene where Biakuya stab Ichigo and leave him to die alone while Rukia enter in the portal. This fact alone is enough to begin the best arc of the anime, wich is the Soul Society.
Beside this important fact, we don't know what reiatsu is, Ishida don't teach Ichigo how to follow it, Gon is non existent, also Don Kanonji! Dude, they supressed so many things that I couldn't even list them all here. Getsuga Tenshou? Forget it! Any kidou name? Also non existent. Everything is too much rushed and superficial.
To list some minor details, remember that Chad is a latino guy and Inoue have some huge breasts and also orange hair collor, wich disappointed me the fact that she's not in the live action. Too many misplaced things to count. Isshin is more serious, ichigo's sisters are almost equal in age and appearance also have any of their characteristics like in the anime.
3- Special effects. Can't even ask too much of them, since bleach is a very difficult and high budget needed one to be near good. Wich's not, in this case, lol. I need to give some props to them for not making it another dragon ball live action.
4- Acting is just ok, nothing out of mind and nothing painful. Except for the sisters. Better than Death Note, for example xD.
5- Cinematography and Photography are not good. I mean, i'm used to a lot of better movies in this aspect. They could explore better the town, like in the temple part and show us some beauty. We are talking about shinigamis here, souls going to heaven and others getting corrupt and becoming hollows. There are no feelings of good and bad, salvation/doom, there are only some monsters that they need to defeat in order to generically save the day? Big opportunity lost here.
So, to finish my arguments it's necessary to warn the newcomers or the people who haven't watched the anime or read the manga that they are missing A LOT of things if they only watch this movie. In opposite direction we have almost perfect live actions like "Boku Dake ga Inai Machi" and "Samurai X", both completely worth your time and deserve the 10 score. For this case, I'll give it a generous 6 and it's more than it actually deserve. Hope for better anime movies in the future.
O Mecanismo (2018)
Another Padilha's Masterpiece
Before I start my review take this as a fact; this is nothing like City of God, neither Elite Troop even using some actors from both shows. Being that said, you should expect a heavy and complex plot about Brazilian political scenary since the begining of the operation Lava Jato (Car Wash), with politicians, corporations, public institutions that actually exist and are part of the huge corruption scheme in Brazil.
For example, MFP (MPF - Ministério Público Federal), Polícia Federativa (Polícia Federal), Petrobrasil (PETROBRAS), Miller & Brecht (Odebrecht) and many others.
After being completely seduced by this show, you will be caught thinking on how corrupt you were in your "small" acts in your daily life and how you could not be a bad example like those corrupt politicians.
Of course it's not a completely accurate series, and what really disturbed me more was the fact that the delegado federal (Federal Deputy/Xeriff/Federal Police Chief) is represented by 2 persons wich actually do the work of agents! The Delegados are much more like the masterminds behind the scene, the experts in criminal law and who structure the case so the MPF can represent in court to the federal judge. they do not chase proof like that in the show, so, it's a dramatical change so the series would not be too much in the office, since there are no shots or fights in this show.
To finally end my review, I must create an index to you of the more important government institutions in the show and what they do in a brief way.
1- Polícia Federal (Federal Police) -> They investigate and create the case to be represented after by MPf in court.
2- MPF (Federal Prosecution) -> they take the case from Federal Police and take it to the justice (federal court) making accusations based in the criminal law, producing more proofs and making deals when necessary.
3- Federal Court/ Judge -> judge the MPF's case, accept the order for some proofs like telephone tapping and many others and all the things a normal judge would do.
So, as you can see, things are not that easy to be done here, all because we respect our constitution wich preserve the due process of law.
Boku dake ga inai machi (2017)
The best live action until 2017
I'll be very simple and objective here. As someone who watched the anime and considered it as the top three ever, here is my opinion:
The series are completely accurate compared to the anime they've managed, actually, to get some details even better! Not to mention the ending wich is different from the anime and also slightly improved.
Now, how about to contemplate an insane quality of photography? How about a perfectly fitting soundtrack? And about good acting? Boku Dake ga Inai Machi is the whole deal. It will impress you even if you know the manga and the anime. Even better for who doesn't know japanese live actions at all neither animes, they will have so much good times watching it.
This show must be an example of how things should be made. And this time we should thank Netflix for bringing this piece of art to us. Thank you very much!
