Leave the World Behind (2023)
Good suspense, zero follow through
The suspense starts off pretty good and fast, even if it relies mostly on stereotypical horror movie music to achieve its effect. But then it just keeps going on and on and on. There are some really good one liners for debating with your doom day prepper family members, but besides that, nothing, and I mean nothing, happens. Yes your questions as to why it's happening get sort of addressed slowly through out, and then some at the very very end, but still... what happens to the family? What happens to the family!? It's like a cliff hanger after two hours and twelve minutes of cliff hangers. I want my two hours back.
The Observers (2021)
I just cant
I love UFO/UAP stuff but there's a line to the bs I'm willing to spend my time on. 10 minutes in and we have moved on from UFOs to the JFK assassination? Really? Just stop. I had to turn it off because first, that's just too far down the rabbit conspiracy hole for me and second, I'm not trying to turn into that crazy and unbearable uncle who rails on and on at thanksgiving about stuff that doesn't matter and didn't happen. How do you bill a movie about UFOs then let Jesse Ventura go off about the all powerful CIA didn't see his election coming but then killed Kennedy? It doesn't even matter the other topics they might cover, you'll see conspiracy everywhere if you watch this.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Genius, not for everyone
It is not every day that a genre bending movie such as Cabin in the Woods comes out. I loved this film, but I am surprised by all the negative reviews. You don't expect a strawberry, banana, pineapple smoothie to taste like only strawberries, or overpoweringly like banana, why would you expect a genre bender to be overwhelmingly comical or horrific?
To begin with, the writing was well done. There are subtle layers that you pick up on the more you watch it. Generally that is considered to be good writing, when there are layers upon layers of subtle dialog and character development. Then of course there is the not so subtle dialog.
It was comical. No it was not a film with both feet planted firmly into the most hysterical depths of comedy. IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE! The comedy, to me, created a refreshing contrast in a world of films where horror, screams and gore are all that is valued.
It was suspenseful but not scary. I don't really like movies where things pop out all the time, so when I watch them, as the "scary" scene approaches I cover one eye and sink into my seat. This film provided enough eye-covering/seat-sinking moments that made my heart race. I understand some people need INTENSE HORROR to like a movie but again, this is not where the movie was trying to go.
It was a conspiracy! The conspiracy was what made this film awesome. Because when I was asked if I wanted to see Cabin in the Woods or Promethus, I chose Promethus. I thought I knew the story already. Even once I watched the trailer I didn't KNOW the story.
The characters were awesome. First, they were playing stereotypes without actually being stereotypes. The Virgin was not a virgin. The Athlete was studying sociology on full academic scholarship. The Scholar, while smart, played football. The Fool unravels the whole story, and the Whore was pre-med and acting like a "slut" because she was literally drugged.
As for people who claim it was poorly acted or that the stereotypes were boring... THAT WAS THE POINT. Proof? The complacency of the story, of the work done by the puppeteers, they were so self satisfied that they ignored the warning signs of their down fall. Its called plot development and foreshadowing for those who would cry lazy writing.
I personally found the editing to be very well done throughout. Awesome foreshadowing. Great dialog, original concept. Over all this move has several well developed themes that are reinforced through technical effects, especially the editing.
Don't take the negative reviews here too seriously, just as you shouldn't take this movie too seriously. People who are hating are haters. They spend money on movies and choose to not be entertained. "It wasn't scary enough" "it wasn't funny enough"- Alright, you go make a better movie!
