Kindred (2020)
A good psychological drama
I'm going to call this a psychological drama rather than a horror film, it is horrible, but it's definitely more of a drama. As other reviews have said there's nothing much new here but it is well acted and creepy. I don't know why people are having a problem with the ending, it's all completely straight forward and it all makes sense.
Spoilers for the entire plot.
Charlotte is perfectly normal, but worries that she might also get very bad post natal depression like her mother. She didn't have a good relationship with her mother and worries she might not be a good mother to her own child, she also worries having a baby will just completely ruin her life and she's not ready for that.
Her boyfriend does not have a good relationship with his mother, Margaret, when he tells her they are relocating to Australia his mother feels completely betrayed by him and she disowns him permanently by having him killed by the stable girl, it wasn't an accident and it wasn't the horse.
Margret and her stepson Thomas are extremely close because they suffered through domestic violence together and Thomas went on to make sure his drunken father died in an "accident".
Margret is the posh lady from the big house so obviously she is considered a pillar of the community, she also employs the stable girl, which would go some way to explaining her loyalty, but Margret was probably blackmailing her into murder.
The posh doctor is on Margret's side because they are of the same class and feel superior to working class Charlotte. The doctor can easily find out about Charlotte's mother's medical records.
Margret and Thomas are drugging Charlotte which is why she has bad dreams and hallucinates, crashing the car.
The doctor conspires with Margret to keep the baby and pretend Thomas is the father, a DNA test is never required unless the family ask for one. Charlotte is put in a psychiatric ward because everyone has conspired to make her seem crazy when she's perfectly well, but traumatized by her treatment and by the grief of losing her boyfriend.
Doctor Who: Asylum of the Daleks (2012)
Weak Story, Full Of Plot Holes.
This story doesn't just have plot holes it has a gigantic plot chasm which threatens to swallow the characters whole.
The basic plot concerns a Parliament of frightened Daleks who ask the Doctor to switch on a forcefield located inside the Dalek asylum. Straight away we have a plot hole, why is there a Dalek parliament and a Prime Minister, since when did the Daleks care about democracy, they are fascists and are convinced they are the Master Race. Why is the forcefield switch on the asylum and not on the main Dalek spaceship where they can easily reach it? Who knows, because these questions are never answered.
We are also introduced to Oswin, a super hacker who can hack the "Dalek hive mind". They've never had a hive mind before, but for this story they do. Oswin helps the Doctor and companions, the Ponds, and is also annoying and overly familiar with them, giving them nicknames based on their looks. There is also a sub-plot about Amy and Rory getting divorced, this is so contrived it's not even worth talking about and has no bearing on any subsequent episodes.
Things get resolved in the usual convoluted Moffat way with super hacker,Oswin, deleting the Doctor from the Dalek database so they forget who he is. SPOILER ALERT Oswin turns out not to be a genius super hacker girl, but a girl who was converted into a Dalek, which goes someway to explain how she knew so much about Dalek technology. The Daleks, now unaware of the Doctor, find they have a stranger and his pals aboard their ship. Normally they would just shoot them, instead they all start shouting "DOC-TOR WHO!!DOC-TOR WHO" at which point the Doctor leaves with the Ponds.
In conclusion not very much happens, the Doctor bumbles about like a senile hipster, even using his Sonic Screw Driver to check if a skeleton in a spacesuit is dead.Yes really. :(
If people want to watch something pretty and shiny with aliens in it they might enjoy this episode. Fans of the show are more likely to be baffled or annoyed by it since it's more like amateur fanfic than a professionally written script.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
A movie made by people who hate horror movies.
This movie is not a parody of horror movies, it is a parody of bad American horror movies that are obsessed with cutting up teens, and deliberately goes out of it's way to insult the audience.
I won't bother going into the story, everyone pretty much knows it by now.
This movie seeks to suck out all the fun of a real horror movie and replace it with bland non-comedy and dull dialogue. The characters are all incredibly bland and unlikeable, the fact that they are actually impressed by the Cabin itself, which is the ugliest thing ever, makes them look like idiots who need to be culled!lol! These are not actual characters, they are walking clichés that the audience doesn't need to care about, and that,i suppose, is the point of the movie, they must die for the entertainment of the audience and that is all they do. Except in this movie they don't die fast enough, they have to live long enough to explain what is happening to the audience, just in case we can't see it with our actual eyes!
Now onto the parts that insult the audience. *Possible Spoilers*
The "virgin" isn't a virgin- This supposed to be a joke that girls are slutty these days so there just aren't any virgins. But the Stoner character and the Nerd boy were far more likely to be virgins than the attractive girl! The writers just decided to stick to the boring cliché where girls are expected to be virgins.
The "Gods" (the audience) demand to be entertained- This is actually funny because the "Gods" are not entertained enough and start to destroy the world, a bit like the audience they feel cheated! LOL!
What the writers forget is that unlike the "Gods" the audience of a horror movie might also want to be challenged and presented with something that actually makes them think about life, death and choices.
This movie presents us with nothing new, there are funny teen horrors with monsters like Gremlins, or scary thriller horrors where people die for the benefit of an audience like My Little Eye. This is nowhere near in the same league as those movies,The Cabin in the Woods is a complete waste of everyone's time, it might have worked as an hour long TV drama but fails as a movie.
