Reviews
Apostle (2018)
Period horror with Michael Sheen brilliance
This period piece sizzles when Michael Sheen is on screen, but becomes dry and monotonous when he is not.
Hereditary (2018)
The scariest film I have ever seen
That just plain spooked the bejesus out of me. That was unsettling, creepy and frightening.
No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
Well made satisfying horror
The likeable lead actress nails her role and carries the audience with her through this spooky gore fest.
Seuwiteuhom (2020)
Special effects masterpiece
Stay for the story and be wowed by the visuals along the way. Incredible art design.
Borley Rectory (2017)
Needed something more
Wildly eccentric, terribly British and ever so slightly dull.
Malevolent (2018)
Creepy horror elevated by its lead actress
Creepy, unsettling, extreme graphic violence and an absolutely beautiful leading actress.
Shookum Hills (2021)
Flat footed snooze fest in the dark
Hits the wrong notes from the start. Characters you don't care about, a story that makes no sense, dialogue poorly written and delivered by a cast that look as disinterested as the watching audience.
Brightburn (2019)
Deliciously dark take on the superhero craze
Brilliantly wicked tale that takes the original superman origin tale and turns it on its head.
The Silence (2019)
Fun B Grade Monster Movie
The special effects are fine, the actors are top tier and the movie runs along at a quick pace but the movie never elevates itself beyond being slight but fun.
Les affamés (2017)
Quirky French language Canadian zombie flick
Stylish, artsy zombie fare which tells its tale set amongst a gorgeous verdant green landscape. Hits a home run at every twist and turn.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Show of the year
Moments of fear, alienation, comfort, spirituality and both conformity and non-comformity all wrapped up in a show made with passion, skill and endless creativity.
Reality Z (2020)
Enjoyable descent into madness
Exciting foray into zombie gore with an interesting cast of characters. Horrific but with some well told interplay of characters experiencing love and betrayal.
Ghoul (2018)
Excellent Indian scarefest
Really well made story that weaves some brutal horror monster scares into a morality tale about the dangers of nationalism and despotism.
Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes (2021)
Deliciously dark with delightful cast
Wonderful show with a cast that handles the dark storyline with confidence and an easy going charm. The four leads nail their roles perfectly and capture the tone of the show perfectly. Hopefully this will be the first season of many.
Betaal (2020)
Fun but shallow horror
Only four episodes long counts against the show as characters don't get a chance to be truly fleshed out. But it remains an interesting horror romp referencing the brutal British colonial past with a likeable cast and high production values.
Ju-on: Origins (2020)
Disturbing
Over 6 episodes this dark, unsettling, time jumping, supernatural ghost story will unsettle and disturb. There are some genuinely horrific scenes and moments that will make you jump out of your skin.
Katla (2021)
Beautiful, bleak and haunting
Much like the landscape it is set in this show captures a lonesome, melancholic, poetic, gothic beauty.
Kingdom (2019)
Period drama chills
Sumptuous, sweeping period drama that captures the horror of a dread disease sweeping across the landscape. Great cast with a chilling ambience keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat from the first moment to the last.
Barbarians (2020)
Powerful
Treachery and brotherhood in equal measure as the disunited tribes of Germania face the wrath of the mighty Roman Empire. Fantastic imagery and an enthralling, emotional tale of hope amid hopelessness.
The Protector (2018)
Superb show
A show that has a handful of stunningly beautiful, strong female actresses and a rich assortment of talented male actors. The male lead having the looks and charisma to match any of Hollywood's leading men. Istanbul is as much of a star as the talented cast and looks magical. From
Season 1 through to the finale of Season 4 this show captivates and entertains leading the audience through a headlong rush of thrills, spills and creative kills. Fantastic!
Black Summer (2019)
Thrilling second season
Each episode is a series of vignettes of the characters with the timeline jumping forwards and backwards showing the chaos unfolding from different characters perspectives. It is inventive, creative storytelling with real panache and technical skill. It is breathless, dread filled and unrelenting. The hopelessness and misery of life in the apocalypse has never been captured in such an all consuming nihilistic fashion.
