Jury Duty (2023)
First episode was brilliant
How they managed to make the process of jury duty funny, is beyond me. After lockdown everyone really is about that down to earth normal everyday life now and adding a celebrity like James Marsden into the mix is brilliant. I keep wondering if Ronald is in on it, as he's just so chill and confident.
I can honestly be pretty dull at the best of times so jury duty was always about being nosy, getting time off work and just wondering what other people serving are like. This is a great series, i'll enjoy it while its here as a second series seems unlikely after everyone realises that filmed jury duty might be rigged with actors.
Single Black Female (2022)
It was a good story, maybe better suited for a TV series
I liked the two leads, I enjoyed seeing them dress up as you don't usually see female actresses with their body shape in movies looking glam in such amazing outfits. They had the best chemistry out of all the other characters. It kept me interested not only the story development, but also to see what Monica and Simone would be wearing. Amber Riley is gorgeous, it was nice to see her as the villain!
I actually believe that this film with a larger budget and stronger production team could be a nice chilling Netflix series. Even just the fact that the two leads do actually look similar was enough to intrigue me to watch this.
Still, their is a lot to unpack and many unanswered questions. I want to know what happened between Simones' mum and dad, what occurred in her life to make her the person she is today? How long had she been following the life of Monica? How many other people has Simone killed as she clearly is very good at it? How did she kill Andre and the woman next door? What happened to all the money that was being sent to Simones' mother by the Harris's? Who was the woman in the woman in the hospital answering the phone to Bebe about knowing Simone? Was she trying to be a good sister to Monica or was she attempting to take over her life? Also Monica appeared to come from a wealthy family and is a daytime tv host yet her own personal home didn't seem to match her upbringing or job. So many unanswered questions!
The plot was still very promising and despite some flaws I was able to enjoy the movie. I just feel like some things were missing! The transitions from one scene to another were abrupt instead of smooth so it was difficult to know whether this was a thriller, comedy or drama. Similar thing with the music in the background; Clearly some horrific things were taking place but the music used to showcase this didn't match or even encourage a scare factor, for instance Simone losing her mind and trashing the place could of been a powerful scene instead it was funny due to the music!
Again, I feel like this movie would have suited a tv series better, as it has promise for developing the characters further, their history, upbringing and eventual catastrophic meeting especially for black/poc audiences.
A Man Called Otto (2022)
A warm hearted movie
I'd watched the original swedish film some years ago so was interested to see how it'd work with American actors.
The actress playing Marisol was amazing and easily my favourite character. It was cute listening to Otto pick-up her lingo and refer to himself as Grandpa Otto. Watching Marisol force her way into Otto's life felt like a long game of tug of war, that ended in a hug and tears. It was always going to be difficult to view Hanks as a miserable, unlikable character but you could feel the characters loss & pain.
Just like Ove, I loved the development of Otto attempting to stay in his misery & isolation but also seemingly being so mentally available that when his community required him he was always there for them. It's a beautiful story about enduring love and loss, and the family and friends who ultimately make our lives worth living.
Castle Rock: Romans (2018)
Good Watch but a disappointing finale, with many questions!
Too many loose ends that even with rewinding confusing parts still couldn't make sense of what was happening.
1. How did Molly have such powerful abilities?
2. If Nic Cage is really just an anomaly then what's with people being so fearful of him. If people get close to him and die or commit murders how did Lacy stay alive so long only to commit suicide far away from the prison decades later?
3. Why did Lacy tell Nic Cage to ask for Henry Deaver when he finally gets rescued from the cage?
4. What is the correlation between Lacy & Henry Deavers' dad both men religious, both choosing to build a cage and imprison someone in it?
5. Did Henry Deavers' dad build the cage before the kid claiming to be his adopted son from another world arrived or after?
6. How old was Nic Cage in his world as his parents were never shown and he seemed to be around the same age as Molly who looked to be around late 40s yet he's described as a kid in the other world but looks no different in either world except for a shoulder deformity?
7. Why did Nic Cage spend so many episodes being weird, awkward and aloof, when Adopted henry deaver had been imprisoned he was able to communicate pretty well?
Although it was a good watch, Many things just didn't make sense to me.
Grandfathered (2015)
Why was this cancelled?
Honestly, a little late but started watching this during the christmas break! Such a comedic, diverse cast and theirs good representation so their something for everyone.
I loved the premise of this show. It's hard not to love a show where lost family members find each other; Although the son Gerald was a bit annoying his funny/cute relationship with his girlfriend and dad made him bearable. It would of been nice to see more moments between Jimmy and Gerald. Also how hilarious was the mum such perfect comedic timing, I spent the entirety of this show rooting for her to get with a decent guy and was sad when they made jimmy lie like that at the end.
The Lodge (2019)
A decent psychological thriller, that i'd recommend
I wouldn't call this a horror, psychological thriller seems more fitting. I've not watched a film like this in a while. As slow as the pace of this movie is, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for every little creepy possible thing, their weren't many, more so just the idea of something potentially creepy. I thought the acting by the kids and lead actress was decent.
For some weird reason I found myself obsessing over the interior design of all the scenes in this movie, I don't know if this was purposefully done by the director as I felt drawn to it, perhaps a sort of subtle nod to "the devil is in the detail". I don't want to sound awful, but what happened to the kids in the beginning was incredibly sad, but what they did to the woman in the end, I felt the repercussions of that woman unravelling were sad but just desserts for those kids. If you're not to caught up in having jump scare horror, then you'd likely enjoy this film.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
As a fan of the original, thoroughly enjoyed this too
I don't think people realise that cult classics that get remakes aren't the same as old movies continued. I enjoyed the witches coming back in this age, and seeing their reaction to the technology advancements. Having a chance to understand a bit more about where it all started in their youth was a nice touch.
The original was fun, silly and wholesome, and this second film was the same. You wouldn't know over two decades have passed since the last film, the witches looked amazing. I enjoyed the musical sequence; If you're not the type of person still expecting movies of this genre made today to be carbon copies of old school films from 20-30 years ago, you'll have a good laugh and enjoy it for what it is.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
A triumph of comedy for all who don't judge
I didn't think i'd be so into this show. However, I love Taika in pretty much anything and many of the actors in this show are funny in other things i've watched, so i thought i'd at least give the first episode a chance. I enjoyed the pilot episode, though episode 2 is when things really started to get exciting watching the two pirate captains obsess over the lifestyles of each other. It's a strange and interesting dynamic that's pretty addictive to watch. I honestly feel I could watch many hours of the captain pirates and their warring crews just sailing about trying to live side by side aboard a fancy pirate ship like some 17th century blended family. I think one thing that didn't go amiss here was how diverse the characters were here, many different races, accents, relationships and it was nice not to feel like labels were forced onto anyone or anything happening in the show. If anything it really did feel like a truly modern tv show. The love story that emerges in the second half you could literally feel brewing from the moment Stede was laying unconscious, it maybe my favourite tv love story ever. I don't think I can wait until season 2.
The Sandman (2022)
An engaging well written show
It's pretty obvious many of the people complaining and giving low scores are too used to having things their way all the time. Even when depicting fantasy fiction lives and characters it seems too far fetched to see women, lgbtqia people of colour with riches and in main roles.
I think for the people who are so concerned with sexuality, gender and race in fantasy fiction they would do well to remember that in reality at the beginning of humanity their was only one race existing and they were in Africa and who knows what sexuality and genders they chose to observe at that time.
I've spent three decades watching the same typical type of actors play dress up as every single type of character that could be imagined, while getting rave reviews for how well they can pretend to be something they're not in real life.
I found this show was a slow burn for me after the first two episodes I wasn't sure I wanted to continue, with no prior knowledge of The sandman story it seemed dull and boring. However, it seemed to just get better and better from episode 3 and I found it difficult to switch off and go to bed. An incredibly refreshing, engaging, heart warming and well written show made even better by the array of flamboyant characters.
Peacemaker (2022)
I put off watching this for ages
Honestly just wasn't a fan of John Cena or peacemaker the character from suicide squad. I saw Danielle Brooks was in the show and decided to give it a shot. Ended up binge watching over two nights; the up and down relationships between the characters really did keep me watching. I didn't understand how this mixed bag of nuts were going to start fighting crime & defeating bad guys, but it works really well in the end. I thought the comedy would be bad and mediocre, but again this gets worked into the development of the characters personalities and just starts to make sense. Also Chris Smith has his history and personal life devolved into here and i couldn't help but feel sorry for him and his attempts to be something he seemed to keep failing at. It's a common thing now adults confessing to not being able to make friends or share their true feelings. I loved all the characters, the obsession of vigilante with Peacemaker being his bff and adebayo and peacemakers blossoming friendship, even eagly kicks some ass so can't wait for another season.
Also I loathe watching tv show intros but the dance at the beginning became something i looked forward too, so awkward but hilarious.
The Score (2021)
A unique film, worth a watch for the experience
I dislike most musicals, but every song in this was written and sung rather well by all the actors. The couple had an unusual chemistry that felt awkward, immature and yet quite natural given their supposed naive backstories. It's hard to fault a movie or show when Will Poulter is involved he really is intriguing to watch and made the film that much enjoyable with his comedic interactions with the other cafe customers.
The Princess (2022)
Such a cool kickass medieval Film
I kept waiting for this to suck, but it never did. The lead actress really did well to carry this film, her fighting skills were impressive. I'm sure there are some dudes who will vote low because it's essentially women kicking ass and men getting their ass kicked by women. The storyline and dialogue isn't fantastic but you really do start rooting for the princess and the excitement of her family truly seeing her for who she is heart touching.
Ku bei (2021)
Unnecessarily explicit Gore
I really love horror movies and zombie films are at the top of that list. But I found this lacking in storytelling, character development and poor dialogue. It was almost halfway through when i eventually learn what the two main characters names were; I think they tried to show them as having a love that triumphs through adversity even during a zombie apocalypse but it didn't feel strong enough. The transmission of the virus is also confusing, is it by vomit, touch, staring, seeing violence or blood; It was never clear just people turning violent and sexually aggressive. The sexual nature of the film just felt over the top and unnecessary, they would of been better making an x-rated silent zombie film for adults and saved the actors learning any lines. The violence in this is probably worst than anything i've seen before in my life, but i finished the film feeling nothing but disappointed.
The Outfit (2022)
A decent watch
I enjoyed the main character, "the cutter" never in a million years would I have expected those two twists at the end. It really does make me wonder about the past life of tailors on saville row .
Master (2022)
This spoke to my current experiences
I found this movie to be an interesting often trying movie. As a black woman, i've been struggling to decide on whether to quit this month or stay on in a toxic work environment were I'm daily ridiculed and mocked by my white male colleagues while everyone laughs along or pretends nothing sinister is going on. Watching Gail attempt to bring peace to Jasmine as though she may finally triumph in her society as long as she endures the issues she's facing along the journey is something i've done many times with other younger black women in my workplace. However, now after one of the worst weeks where a racial slur reawakened trauma in me; I can no longer see that as being good advice. Their really is very few safe spaces for black women especially if they fail to find kinship with other black women in the same environment to make the experience just a bit more bearable. I know many who haven't lived a life as a black women will not understand the struggles displayed in this film as they don't really go into much detail. However the navigation of university life for a young black girl vs that of women of other races is worlds apart. One thing I do dislike about the story though was that Jasmine had the opportunity to seek solace within a group of people who may be able to provide support and understanding for what she is unable to explain, instead the story led her to go on home alone to a dorm room where she clearly felt uncomfortable and as though she was being followed. If she was the over achieving valedictorian that her character implied herself to be, her choices throughout the movie should of been a lot more sensible. She was literally no better than the typical busty intro bimbo in a cheesy slasher film.
Good Hair (2009)
Chris Rocks take on...
This documentary was abysmal. 1hr 36 minutes of a male comedian making a mockery of black women and their hair care choices in an desperate attempt to fit into a society where they're already ridiculed for their natural hair texture and appearance.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
A fantastic movie, if you like people you'll love this film!
After all the hit or miss movies/tv shows that have been coming out the past 2 years, wasn't sure this movie would be any different. The opening pool scene was a bit meh and I was considering switching to another movie especially as it's 2hrs long. I'm glad I stayed watching, especially as that opening pool scene when revisited later on in the film was far more emotional and terrifying the second time. I feel like this movie could of been a great but drawn out tv series but was more enjoyable as a film. Pretty much all the side characters are fun and likeable which is rare and you end up rooting for them to survive especially as they don't act like the typically well trained to survive all kinds of apocalypse characters you see in movies. Chris Pratt was an interesting but likeable choice as the lead. He seemed to put his usual comedic shtick aside to shed more light on the funny supporting cast. However, he was still believable as the serious action hero/doting dad. I wouldn't understand anyone giving this film a score lower than 7, as it was a fantastic movie.
The Boys: What I Know (2020)
I don't write reviews but let me just say...
This may well be the best episode of any tv series I've ever watched and I'm 31, so I've had some time to see many. I think this show is just something else, original, captivating, sickening, really gets under your skin. It was an hour episode but it took 2 hours to watch as I kept rewinding the best parts. I'm not sure it compares to what other tv shows have done I'm sure you know the ones I'm referring to. This show just pushes all the right buttons and I'm pretty sad it's over but I'll likely watch it over again from the beginning. Just wow!
Good Girls (2018)
Brilliant female leads!
I don't know why I waited until the end of lockdown to finally watch this series! The female lead characters are all brilliantly written, they're hilarious, witty, sensitive, and powerful as are their partners in the show. Ruby and Stan are my favourite couple watching the rollercoaster of their lives as they struggle with being good people, committing bad deeds! I hope too see another series soon!
The Umbrella Academy: The End of Something (2020)
It just got better and better!!!
The first season kind of blew away to be honest. I think many of us are addicted to shows that can deliver good humour, fantastic dialogue, supernatural abilities, complicated blended families, diverse characters alongside a soundtrack that just gets you singing and dancing along.
It's hard not too feel anything but a bit empty when the show ends as it's a rollercoaster of emotions with this series and the second one honestly just got better and better.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Save your weekend, watch something else...
The worst film I've ever seen in my life, and I've watched 'The Room' movie. I fell asleep four times and wondered why I kept waking myself up. I was excited to see Tilda Swinton, in fact her typical unusual character is the only thing that I didn't completely hate in this movie. If you're having trouble falling asleep, as a last resort I'd suggest watching this movie.
Timewasters (2017)
Enjoyed seeing something innovative
I thought the premise for Timewasters was innovative, the execution could of been a bit more thorough. As I watched all the episodes in one day, I was hoping for that climatic moment of relief when my hours spent watching feel worth the time which it did during musical scenes. I felt the episodes starting to drift off into mediocre bad children's tv. My rating of 6 might seem high, however that score is based on the concept of timewasters, the costumes and scenery and the musical elements of the show. Hopefully in time this show could be revived with better dialogue and episodes that lead to somewhere that make sense. After all I believe this show's audience is for a more mature audience.
