Applaus (2009)
Life vs Art
Paprika Steen gives an amazing performance as a successful actress (Thea Barfoed ) who is trying to put her demons behind her and get back her children. As the movie unfolds and Thea's personality is revealed, we can see the conflicts and problems that led to her losing her children in the first place.
I really liked how the movie cleverly uses a real stage play that Thea is starring in, as a comment on her life and personality. Her time on stage and backstage as the star is interwoven and contrasted with her encounters with her children and "real life".
And I was really impressed with Paprika Steen in the lead role. I cannot say I found the character of Thea entirely sympathetic but I could not look away. I was mesmerized by the moving portrait of this very flawed but magnetic personality trying to deal with her own failings. Ms. Steen's performance is not to be missed.
Roswell (1999)
Best ever TV show
Today, October 6, 2009 is the 10th anniversary of the airing of the pilot episode of Roswell, directed by David Nutter. As far as I am concerned, Season 1 with its original cutting edge music and storyline was the best TV ever. Before "Twilight" there was Roswell. The teenage "Romeo and Juliet" alien/human romance was written with clever, witty dialog. The characters were all lovable and you knew someone like that when you were at school. In my opinion it was perfect TV - adventure, romance and with a moral depth. Plus, Roswell was the TV series that was saved by its fans. The WB wanted to cancel the show after season 1 but the fans responded with the Tobasco campaign - mailing in thousands of bottles of Tobasco (favorite condiment of the aliens) and managed to get the show renewed for a second season. You should watch it and see what made millions of fans so passionate and loyal.
Serenity (2005)
Run to see Serenity
I absolutely loved this movie! If you liked Star Wars, run, do not walk to see Serenity! These "rebels" would be right at home in the company of Hans Solo and the Milennium Falcon. Just when you think you know what's going to happen next - you would be wrong. Plus it has exciting space-chase scenes, humor and sadness with a wonderfully endearing cast of misfits led by Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres. Joss Whedon is not afraid to take chances with his plot or his characters and has done a splendid job creating a fast paced action adventure roller-coaster ride. It even has a message. The audience applauded when it ended. And if you like the TV show "Numbers" catch David Krumholz in a featured role. I can't wait for a sequel. (By the way, you don't have to be familiar with the TV series to know what's going on.) Don't miss Serenity! I'm going to see it again!
When Do We Eat? (2005)
Wonderful movie - want to see it again
I saw this movie over the weekend at the Boston Film Festival and just loved it. It's a Seder supper that is going terribly wrong with the world's most dysfunctional family. But then it takes an unexpected turn and... well that's what makes this film so great. It's not just a run of the mill comedy. It's not predictable. It manages to surprise and delight you. Plus, it has some excellent visual effects. I laughed, I cried and in the end, found it truly heartwarming. Michael Lerner's performance brought me to tears. Lesley Ann Warren is fabulous. Jack Klugman as the crabby grandfather is excellent. Adored Shiri Appleby's performance also. I can't find anything bad to say about this film. I can't wait to see it again!!!
