Troop Beverly Hills (1989)
It's great campy fun
Is this movie an Oscar winner? No. But it's very entertaining! The jokes are ridiculous and the fashion is pure 80's camp, but that only adds to the charm. The kids did a great job with their roles, but let's be real here: Shelley Long made this movie. She's heartwarming and comical and so over-the-top that it works. I watched this as a kid and recently re-watched it as an adult. It's still great fun. It takes me out of my heavy life with all my adult problems. Not all movies need to be serious and perfect and realistic. Sometimes movies are just meant to entertain us, and that's what this gem does.
Lost Women of Highway 20 (2023)
Beautiful Tribute to the women
This was equally frustrating as it was cathartic. Having grown up and lived less than 100 miles from where these events took place, the places mentioned hold a certain familiarity for me. I admit that I hadn't heard of any of this when I grew up, so it was quite a shock. This documentary does a beautiful job of balancing the hunt for a monster, with the grieving that is done by the loved ones who were left to deal with their loss. It also highlighted the efforts and failures of the law enforcement. Some of them went above and beyond to help, while others shirked their duties. At the end of this, you're left with the chilling reminder to believe women and children when we speak out. I recommend this without hesitation.
A Fall from Grace (2020)
I loved it!!
I don't know why all these self appointed pseudo film critics gave it a 1 star. The plot is realistic and chunks of it have happened in real life. The lovebombing and the proposal from the "perfect man": that's all real and (unfortunately too common). The scam of stealing the elderly's social security checks while under the guise of being their "caretakers": also completely true. (There was even a serial killer in real life who didn't even bother with chaining them up, she just killed them). The blunders of the defense attorney while in court were also believable. She was fresh outta law school and this was essentially her first case! For those who think it's unrealistic, I'm not sure what they're referencing. I really enjoyed this film. The acting was good and the plot was great. Although I saw some of it coming (because I've met too many men like Mehcad Brook's character), and you can piece it together, the ending you just don't see coming at all. Don't listen to the poor reviews; watch it and make up your own mind about it. :)
