In Bruges (2008)
Brilliance in Bruges
It's hard to believe that Martin McDonagh hadn't written or directed on the big screen before this title. His brilliant writing allows a dark and complex drama to have comical moments, and it doesn't come across as too busy and is easy to keep up with. Colin Farrell is superb, as is Brendon Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes. Britis-Irish filmaking at it's very best.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Gyllenhaal makes it, the ending breaks it
What a performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. He is terrifying yet friendly, and his character's progression is superb. He goes from small time criminal, who is just trying to get out of crime and into legitimate work, into a bona fide psychopath. Gyllenhaal's voice and expressions make him legitimately scary, but it could have been so much more. His character faces no repercussions, even though there was plenty of opportunities to give us something. I'm all for the bad guy getting away, but this seemed a bit underwhelming. It almost felt as they they were planning something bad to happen, but in the end ran out of time and decided to leave him to get away with it. Fantastic directorial debut though.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Brutally Brilliant
Tarantino's debut and it's clear he was still working on his style, but there are some parts of this film that are brilliant. Mr Blonde's 'stuck in the middle with you' is brutally brilliant cinema perfection, and you'll struggle to see a better scene. Tarantino's writing has got better, but for a debut, this shows his directing genius. Close to perfect, but the writing let's it down, and Steve Buscemi's overacting is distracting at best, but you can't deny it's brilliance.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Never watch this.
Safe yourself. Spend the time doing something more interesting like watching your grandma knit an entire scarf and hat set in complete silence.
Speed Kills (2018)
Please John, stop.
Quite possibly the (second) worst film Travolta has ever been in, and that's the bottom of a very long list of duds. Someone should tell the CGI team it's 2018; my 6-year old nephew could use green screen better and he can't spell 'deluded', which aptly is what the director must be for releasing this to the public. The writing made what could have been a complex and multi-dimensional drama into a child's play, which again my nephews recent portrayal of a tree in a forest would beat to an Oscar. The only reason this gets two stars is because it's not 'Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000'.
