Bert Kreischer: Secret Time (2018)
Beautifully written and surprising
You can see he tried staying true to himself and also made a conscious effort to evolve as a comedian. Most of his jokes are story styled but he has taken the time to insert more traditional type jokes. Watching this was like eating simple food made by a great chef, it was all the same ingredients of his previous specials but you can see he has spent more time and effort to make it better.
Daybreak (2019)
Cool concept but...
The idea of the Apocalypse being fun was exciting to me, I expected "The end of the world" but unfortunately all I got was "Pitch Perfect 3"
Instead of trying to be original the writers blatantly rips off themes and characters from Kick-ass, Scott Pilgrim, Mean Girls and Riverdale. Script feels rushed, written on Adderall, scribbled in a week and handed in 1 minute before deadline.
Don't get me wrong there are things they did well.
1. Josh is relatable, not overly attractive, an outsider. He actually looks young enough to be in school and wasn't athletically built like Riverdale school "children"
2. The Zombie bite mistake had me on edge, scary and funny. This was the tone I expected for the rest of the series. Not the campy game show, confusing comic book monstrosity that followed.
3. Miss Crumble fighting her urges makes the hit-girl knock-off story line somewhat interesting. The maggots and filthy teeth hilarious and gross at the same time. The mother daughter dinamic was nice, she should've died, the sacrifice would've added drama and gravity to the victory.
4. The high-school flashbacks revealing the "love story" between Josh and Sam was well thought out and engaging. After a while it was the only thing that kept me watching.
5. Mr Burr is a great character, excellent villain and one of the few surprises that I didn't expect.
Okay now for what I hated.
1."The Jocks are secretly gay" this has been done so many times a blind man could see the on screen kiss coming from a mile away. The relationship lacked depth and the story about Turbo's dad felt like a detour.
2. Everything that happens in the last episode is unearned. The show clearly makes Josh the leader, he takes on the Heroes journey, saving the day and then lazily flips it on him with an on the nose "The future is féminine..." reveal. This could've been done smarter, giving Sam more responsibility, making her earn the reveal instead of just giving it to her after fawning over Josh, getting jealous because of another woman etc etc.
3. Everyone blindly following Sam all of a sudden because she was always popular is weak and inconsistent with why they followed Micheal Burr and Turbo. Again the events of the last episode showed Josh as the successor, and then flips it to be clever or progressive. But comes accross as lazy. The show is all over the place and logically it doesn't quite add up.
4. Josh wanting to settle down in the mall doesn't fit his character. This feels like an Eli move. Josh had all that time with his Dad, reflecting, learning and then doing exactly what he shouldn't do.
5. The rocket is a phallic symbol f****g the earth line was so on the nose I cringed on my couch. So so so bad. This is like my grandad making a "women belong in the kitchen" joke.
Two endings that would've been better:
1. After they kiss Josh suggests that they should move back into the mall and be king and queen together. Sam says she wants to fix the world and not rule it. Sam choosing to be more ambitious (still in line with the theme of the show) "I'm not a queen..." End
2. Josh and Sam decide to travel together and recruit, ties in with the sunflower idea and fixing the planet.
Scorpion (2014)
Entertaining and funny, a story full of heart
I was surprised by the extremely negative reviews of a show that is so entertaining, me and my wife have abandoned all other shows until we have finished binge watching this one. The acting is solid, Elyes Gabel has elements of Roobert Downey Jnr's Tony Stark and even sounds like him, go ahead close your eyes... it can't be unheard.
The argument that its fake hasn't got a foot to stand on, really how real do people think CSI, Elementary and The Mentalist is? Its more fun because it is fake.
The best part of it is that all the characters are likable and relatable. A part of me enjoyed the thought of being a genius, misunderstood, not reaching my full potential because the world isn't made for guys like me, even though I am an average guy. The story has a lot of heart brought in by Katharine McPhee and her son.
Being a connoisseur of series I believe barring Daredevil this is the best series I've watched this year. It's a thrilling show, with a lot less uncomfortable stress than series like 24, Criminal Minds and GOT. I love Scorpion and hope it will stay for years to come.
