The Survivor (2021)
Editing and pacing makes this film confusing. Great story.
The way this film was edited together makes it confusing for the viewer. It's too choppy and takes away from a great story and a great message in my opinion. Usually, Holocaust stories seem exploitative and a means to invoke sympathy, but this was a strong message about one man's will to survive at all costs. The most important scene in the film, in my opinion, is with the SS officer and Harry Haft at the banquet table after Harry's long fight. It is extremely relevant about the times in which we find ourselves today.
The Forever Purge (2021)
Terrible writing. The decisions make ZERO sense
The decision to leave private property as expansive as a ranch without knowing what is going on and not returning after finding out your area is in a "rule of law" situation is really dumb. In "The Purge" universe, the characters would have prepared for almost any eventuality and had backup. Picking up additional adults would have insured extra security as well. The whole idea of fleeing to Mexico is a ridiculous political attack which went as far as to errantly use the term "dreamers" to refer to US citizens who were fleeing a war zone in their home land. At the end of the movie, it shows the wife receiving free medical care which is another shot at the US system. As we know, someone always has to pay at some point for everything. Nothing is ever free. I truly hope this is the last Purge Movie. I was shocked there was only one token black person featured in the entire movie. That should get the ire of the entire world right now. BLM should be outraged.
The Reagans (2020)
Revisionist History, Sad Political Hitjob
I lived during this time. The warping of facts presented in this miniseries is mind blowing. Yes, the early 80s was bad. Most of that had to do with Nixon's decision to go off the gold standard, rapid inflation in the late 60's, the oil embargo and ,with it, gas prices more than tripling overnight. Everyone was tightening their belts. Everyone's money didn't go as far. The problems pointed out in this miniseries are still problems today. In truth, when the economy recovered in the mid-80s, we lived through one of the best times in the history of the nation from about 1984-1999 including the fall of the USSR. Those of us who lived in that time lived in fear of nuclear holocaust at any moment. All that ended under Pres. Reagan's watch.
Avenue 5 (2020)
If you watch more than 2 episodes, the joke is on you!!!
I've given this a couple of episodes and it's just too obtuse for me. Why is the ship called "Avenue 5"? No explanation. It's just like the show "His Dark Materials". I'm watching wondering who "His" is and why everyone has a literal spirit animal. The sad thing: it seems the show runners have a near unlimited budget. The sets and action sequences have production value. The most implausible thing about this show is that no one would ever put this many idiots on a space ship
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Can't take my eyes off the screen!!!
First off, I'm watching this on HBO as I type this (I had to pause the movie). Very few things keep my attention these days with the ubiquity of phones, laptops, etc. However, this is the first movie in a LONG time that I cannot stop watching. I literally can't take my eyes off the screen. I can imagine in the theater The Greatest Showman would overwhelm the senses. I usually wouldn't like musicals, but this is absolutely fantastic.
It Will be Chaos (2018)
This is not flattering to the plight of migrants in Europe
If this documentary does anything, it shows the horrors of accepting a wave of refugees into your nation who do not share in the nations values and customs. It also shows why and how nationalism is rising all over the globe as the disparity between "haves" and "have nots" grows wider. The average German family has one child. The migrants who are desperate to enter Germany have four. Germans are finally figuring out they are going to be outnumber by migrants in short order if this continues. When the family gets to Germany, they realize their situation is no better than their time in Turkey and they are without people like themselves to enjoy a common culture instead of becoming part of the cultural practices of Germany. I felt no pity for anyone I saw in this documentary and felt anger toward those in Europe who are not only allowing this to happen but are promoting this atrocity. This really opened my eyes to migrants roving Europe instead of fighting for freedom in their country.
Legion (2017)
Amazing! Absolutely blown away!
If you're a Marvel universe fan, just watch it. This series has unlimited possibilities given Legion is an Omega level mutant and this is possibly set in an alternate X-men universe. Legion skews reality with insanity seamlessly. I wondered many times where in the story we, the audience, were and what was actually real through the eyes of Legion. This may be a stretch but Syd seems a lot like Rogue. Aubrey Plaza is hilarious as always and I hope her character comes back as many times as they can fit her into his 'mind'. When I saw Aubrey Plaza, I knew this series would have dark humor done right. One wonders if Legion will somehow dove-tail with the movie Logan OR if Stewart will reprise his role of Dr. Xavier. Really looking forward to the 'how' in this universe since Dr. X is Legion's father. BTW the cinematic quality of this is only matched by the cinematic quality of Breaking Bad--no coincidence!
