Clash of the titans!
15 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
'Aadu Puli Aattam' is not the first movie that comes up in our mind, when we think of Kamal-Rajini starrers of late 70s. I don't think the movie was commercially successful or critically acclaimed. It might have been an also-ran movie, as there were no big names involved, apart from the superstars. The director S.P.Muthuraman wasn't really popular at that time.Nevertheless, it is not an avoidable one. I would say that APA is more watchable than Ninaithale Inikkum or Alaudinum ArpudaVilakkum. The first 20 mins are pretty interesting but the story takes some bizarre turns later and falters. Some parts of the movie, like the climax fight sequence are engaging. Unlike the other films these two acted together, this one is neither a family drama nor a romantic movie. The story seems like it is tailor-made for MGR & Nambiar as there are quite a few stunts scenes, two-timing and some punch dialogues too. 'Aadu Puli Aattam' (translated in English - 'The Goat and Tiger game') refers to an old chess-like board game played in Tamil nadu using pebbles. Themovie starts with Kamal and Rajini, close associates, playing this game in a bar. When the game is finished, the couple, along with their gangmembers ransack the bar and loot the money.

There are some notable scenes. A prisoner called 'Bhai' who is to be hung soon has a blind son. After Bhai is executed, Kamal who does not want the kid to know the truth & tries to act as Bhai by mimicking Bhai's voice. Though not a great scene, it must have been new to Tamil cinema during those days. Later a Prabhudeva-Karthik movie was entirely based on this concept. Later when Kamal tricks one of Rajini's associates by 'capturing' Major is a nice scene. I especially liked Kamal's expression when he comes back to Major and unties him.

The bike-car chase between Kamal and Major is also well shot. Just note the scene when he is shot on his leg. The way he limps is just too natural. No other actor bothers to display the pain and feelings as much as this man. The Sardarji make-up and north-Indian accent is a good attempt too. Similarly the climax stunt scene is a well made one featuring Kamal and Rajini in a long drawn fight on a roof top. It is a well picturised stunt scene with very few camera tricks, thanks to Kamal's agility. He is extremely quick, energetic and dedicated. I could not spot a single shot in which he uses a dupe. But the same can not be said about Rajinikanth. This whole fight sequence was shot on Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth's dupe. Yes, even in close-up shots you can see Rajini's dupe trying hard to cover his face with his palms.

The movie has a good number of clichéd scenes. The director follows the age-old practice of placing an odd-looking wig on the hero's head in the flashback(to show him as an 'innocent' man!). The flashback scenes are pretty much avoidable(especially Kamal dreaming of his ex-lover, who chases a train in 'slow motion' is funny). Thankfully there are only two songs and there isn't much romance. I guess the Bhai and his son were straight out of some drama troupe as their acting reminded me of early-80's DD 'Nadagams'. Major Sunderrajan is asked to wear the Khaki uniform yet another time. I can imagine the outrageous response he would have received from the audience when he mouthed his famous two-liner - 'Naan Kandippa Seyyaran. I will certainly do it!'..;-) There are some good one-liners for Rajinikanth. Especially 'Idhu Rajini Style' is stylish, indeed. But the way he says 'Dost' every time he meets Kamal is funny. It sounds more like Sivaji Ganesan's 'Thambeeeee,Ammaaaaa'...:-). Thengai Sreenivasan gets introduced in a grand manner, as a pipe-smoking Brahmin CID with a double barrel gun. But his role is disappointing. This movie doesn't have any comedy track, either.

In the second half of the movie, Kamal gets an opportunity to work for the Crime Branch. Kamal, as usual is at ease in these roles. In the investigation scenes I felt, he could have avoided starting all sentences with a 'Well...'(In fact all wannabe-Kamal Hassans appearing in mimicry shows, never fail to copy this). From here on, Kamal's role becomes more James Bond-like working for the police, two-timing Rajini's associates and finding Rajini's hideouts. In the end, Kamal pushes Rajini from the top of a building, Rajini falls on a bush and loses his eyesight. As expected, the villain mouths the most common dialogue used in a climax..'Naan thirundhitten'.

Kamal Hassan is the heart of 'Aadu Puli Aattam'.The entire story is about him - his early life, his lover, shattered dreams, gang of thugs enlightenment and revenge. For most part of the film, he appears in the hippie-style, which was hugely popular in the late 70s. He looks dashing in the intro scene where he rides a bullet. Though this role is a cakewalk for this extremely skilled actor, he doesn't get a chance to showcase his abundant talents in APA. The scene in which he goes to Rajini's den and gets a cold welcome is good. Rajini throws a garland on Kamal and calls him an 'Aadu'. In turn, Kamal turns back and throws the same garland on air which falls right on Rajini's neck, and says, 'Idhu nanbanukku poatta malai illa', implying that he is the tiger and Rajini, the goat. Like this there are few promising sequences, but overall, the movie is just average.Music is disappointing(neither MSV not Illayaraja) but photography was pretty good, especially in the opening scene.(BTW, This is a Black& White movie).

When I saw it, I could relate it to several other films which came later. Kamal's own Khakki Chattai,a much bigger hit and a better entertainer can be called a remake of APA. More recently, Kireedom and Pokkiri have some scenes resembling this movie.

Chanakyan (1989)
10/10
Gripping thriller
30 May 2007
Fantastic movie! One of the most different revenge movies made in India. Normally, the protagonist makes use of his brawns, rather than brains to avenge the villains. Kamal himself has acted in a dozen action thrillers of the same type. But Chanakyan is a mind blowing film which handles 'revenge' in an extremely different way. Kamal, Jayaram and Thilagan have given a knock out performance. Urmila Matongkar looks gorgeous.

Years after his family gets massacred by a politician, Johnson returns with a masterplan to destroy his him. The only difficulty is - his enemy is none other than the Chief minister of Kerala! Revealing more of the story isn't good...So guys, get the DVD and watch it!

Baba (2002)
1/10
India's Biggest Box-office Flop
20 July 2006
Baba - Rajinikanth will never forget this name in his life. This is the movie which caused his downfall. It was released with much hype but crashed badly and laid to severe financial losses for its producers and distributors. Rajinikanth had to personally repay them for the losses incurred. Soon after its release, he tried venturing into politics but failed miserably. Its a very bad movie with horrible acting, bad-quality makeup and pathetic screenplay. Throughout the movie, Rajinikanth looks like a person suffering from some disease. I'm one of the unfortunate souls who saw Baba, first day first show in theatre. The audiences were so bored that most of them left the theatre before the intermission. Sorry, I'll not recommend this one to anyone.

Vikram (I) (1986)

Welcome to Salamia!
20 July 2006
I agree with you. Vikram is a really enjoyable movie. A big budget extravaganza which borrows heavily from many Bond movies. Kamal Hassan plays an undercover cop, assigned to track down an international smuggler who hijacked a nuclear missile. After his wife gets shot by a sniper, he swears revenge on her killers and this leads him to an imaginary country, Salamia. Salamia is shown as a kingdom ruled by Amjad Khan. He is a typical emperor wearing robes and jewels and has an army of his own. His beautiful daughter, played by the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia, falls in love with Kamal. The song pictured on Kamal and Dimple, 'Meendum Meendum Va', is one of the most melodious of Ilayaraja. Throughout the movie, the locales are exotic and well pictured.

Upon release, Vikram was panned by critics. It was termed one of Kamal's bad movies. But financially, Vikram was a success and had a good run throughout. The songs became classics and even the baddie Sathyaraj became a sought-after hero, after Vikram. The stunt director Dharma was affixed the title 'Vikram' and came to be known as 'Vikram' Dharma.

Thevar Magan (1992)
10/10
The Mother of all caste-based movies
15 June 2006
One of the most successful movies of Kamal Hassan's Rajkamal International production company. A cult classic that got both critical acclaim and huge box office collections. About a dozen movies were released along with it, on Diwali '94 but all these were reduced to box-office disasters(including the Rajinikant starrer 'Pandian'). Such was the impact of Thevar Magan. The thespian Sivaji Ganesan was aptly cast in the role of Kamal's father, the village chief. Nasser, Revathi and Gouthami reveled in their roles and Revathi won the National award for 'Best Supporting actress'.

But more than everything, this is the movie which spawned a deluge of flicks based on the caste-feuds happening in villages, none of which could match the original in terms of grandeur, story or performances. Thevar Magan, upon its release, was literally worshipped by the 'Thevars', a warring caste in Tamil Nadu's rural areas. Some political organizations still argue that the movie itself is the reason for the violence happening in these villages.

The telugu dubbed version 'Kshatriya Putrudu' was an equally big hit. Later the movie was remade in Hindi as 'Virasat', starring Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Amrish Puri and Pooja Batra. The Hindi version too was a success.

Watchable!
5 September 2005
If you have'nt seen the Hindi original(Munnabhai MBBS), 'Vasool Raja MBBS' will be a rip-roaring comedy for you. For the n'th time the acclaimed duo, Kamal Haasan and Crazy Mohan come together to give a laughable, entertaining and successful masala venture. When compared with the original Sanjay Dutt starrer, this movie is technically cheap and haphazardly made. But what matters most for the masses is the entertainment value of a movie. As expected, the movie had a good run in the box office. It has become a habit for Kamal, one of India's most talented actor, to make senseless slapstick comedies after every serious big budget movie. Similarly, this was released after his village action-flick Virumandi, which had an average run, although critically acclaimed. Kamal hasn't cared much about his make up too, as he looks plump n tired, in most of the scenes. Prabhu is reduced to playing his sidekick. Prakashraj, for the first time with Kamal, has done a decent job.

Overall, this is not one of Kamal's best comedies but is a real-good time-pass flick.

perfect masala!
21 August 2005
This is what we call Masala! this film has it all. comedy, action, romance, music, thrills..what not? Do not expect any kind of logic from the movie. It was made in the early eighties by AVM productions and proved to be the biggest hit in Kamal Haasan's career spanning 50 years. This is the best of his action movies. The songs were all trendsetters, especially 'Happy New Year'(which is still famous among everyone) & 'Nethu Rathiri' (erotic song played by Kamal and Silk). Illayaraja, the music director shot to fame during this period and this movie contributed to his fame. The stunt scenes are a treat to watch.

Overall, its a fairly decent entertainer.

Enjoyable!
21 August 2005
Sathi Leelavathi is one of the Kamal Haasan-Crazy Mohan combo's most successful ventures. For a change, Kamal Haasan is not the hero of this movie. He plays a supporting character as an orthopaedician speaking a Coimbatore Tamil accent, with Kovai Sarala as his wife. This movie is directed by Balu Mahendra who, a decade back gave the memorable 'Moondram Pirai'(Remade as 'Sadma' in Hindi) with Kamal. Sathi Leelavathi is a joy ride throughout. The first half is rip-roaring and the second half has its share of sentiments, family bonding and of course a happy ending. Later it was remade as 'Biwi No.1' in Hindi starring Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan.

A must watch!

Thenali (2000)
10/10
Average movie...but a Bumper Hit!!!
11 August 2005
Kamal Haasan is certainly one of the most talented and popular stars of Indian Cinema. Many of his comedies are worth watching several times. But Thenali is not one of Kamal's best movies. Its mindless comedy. The performances are good but the story lacks any substance and continuity. Jayaram and Kamal and Crazy Mohan have succeeded in making the audience laugh out loud but once you come out of the theater, you just don't remember anything except the peppy songs tuned by A.R. Rahman.

All said and done, this was a blockbuster hit. 'Thenali' ran for nearly 200 days throughout Tamil Nadu and even its dubbed Telugu version did good business. It was made on a shoe-string budget but turned out to be a highly-profitable film.

Nayakan (1987)

Watch it!
28 December 2004
This is, till date, the best Indian movie ever made. A fantastic star cast(Kamal Haasan, Nasser, Janakaraj), splendid direction(Mani Rathnam) and excellent music score by the maestro Illayaraja made the movie do wonders in the box office. Kamal Haasan, who was already a super star when this movie was made, proved that he can get into any ones shoes. Here he played the role of an angry young man who becomes a Mafia don with almost the entire city supporting him. With this movie and a National Award for the Best Actor, he came to be known as the best actor in Indian Cinema.

Mani Rathnam became a nation-wide celebrity with this movie and every movie he made after Nayagan raised expectations among the audience.

The story is that of a Mafia don, who is a kind of Robin hood for his own people, takes justice into his hands and kills the baddies. He earns respect from his people, incurs the wrath of the other underworld thugs, and is feared by the police, till a honest cop decides to challenge him. Though the story is similar to The Godfather, the way in which this movie is shot is different and keeps the viewer engrossed from the first scene till the end, when the 60 year old hero is assassinated in public for a brutal murder he did 30 years back.

Nayakan - Slick, stylish and interesting.
