Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
The one who made me excited of anime again
Mission in rescuing world and humanity lately becomes favorite between writers of comics/novels, animes, or even movies such as Pacific Rim, The Host, and Oblivion. Because Shingeki no Kyojin (SnK) also presents the same thing, it's a challenge how it will deliver and explore the story.
From its trailer we can get how intense it is which can instantly warn those who can't stand scenes of slaughters and gore to cancel watching this anime. But let it fools you.
This is one factor why I love SnK; it presents action and drama in fitting proportion. The action scenes are caused by strong emotions. No trashy dialogs, even if we understand it, the dialogs have a deep sense of people's perspective of life. Different from the manga, the anime version of SnK has a nice progress of its story. At first, I wasn't sure to watch this anime because I read the manga earlier. I was afraid of disappointment I might get because somethings would definitely be cut. But I was wrong. The crews successfully picked up which one should be included in the anime and what not without leaving a hole in the story.
However there's a thing that annoyed me; flashbacks. Many flashbacks are shown too often plus the presence of Episode 13.5 which I think is not necessary.
For the plot, they managed to create fairly realistic characters though they are not enough explored and developed that might be can be seen in Season 2 later. The main character, Eren, is not a Marty-Stu (this is another reason I fell in love with SnK. Mostly animes have Marty- Stu/Mary-Sue as their main character), which it's certain that he's not the strongest, smartest, or even wisest but still becomes the most important one for a strong reason.
In terms of visual, this anime is pleasing your eyes. We can enjoy the crazy angles of shoot in action scenes and outstanding details on the titans. But for not unnecessary things, like horses, they keep it not detailed. The devouring scenes have been fairly censored compared t its manga version so it won't make you too disgusted.
Last but not least, its music is one of the best in anime/movie history. I mean with music is its insert songs. The first opening song is enough to represent emotions of SnK but not the second and all of ending songs, in my opinion. As someone who is obsessed with music scores/insert songs, I immediately purchased the soundtrack album which consists all of the insert songs and I was completely satisfied. All of them can express SnK as whole even their lyrics are very appropriate to the setting.
Crazy bloody action scenes, detailed and strong background story, music which completes, make Shingeki no Kyojin become the strongest anime/manga in terms of emotion I've ever known. Many values can be take from SnK, such as a different view of the world, the importance of trust, and how sometimes things happen differently than how we see it. The strength of story is breathtaking though the author seems prefer the whole issues on the beginning then finish them all on the very last. But this is why Shingeki no Kyojin always be waited by the audience and become a hot topic.
If you're looking for an anime which is different than others, Attack on Titan won't ever disappointed you.
Mi-seu-teo Go (2013)
Nice concept, not-so-good realization
On the first time you step into theater studio to watch this movie, you may expect Mr. Go is just another family-oriented film with basic plot and predictable ending but I should say, it wasn't. The plot is well- build. For first thirty minutes of the movie we are asked to 'learn' the history of the star gorilla explaining the relation the gorilla and the human child shared. Not like another movie with animal-human relation, this one is so vivid. You'll know exactly why the gorilla loves her so much.Though some of plot elements are quite questionable. The plot twist also not disappointing, it plays with our sympathy to that gorilla and might cause to tears a bit (for kids, may be they really would cry, gentle one). Surprisingly, the visual are so Hollywood-like. The CG of gorilla looks so natural and expressive, scenes in stadium shows that they really look for details, such as choreography. Being released in 3D, it's worthy. You may shove your body to avoid the balls they are throwing but that's it. The only scene which is worthy to watch in 3D is just in the stadium one. The characters don't flow so smoothly through the entire movie. They give us some ala Korea jokes to laughed at, which are nice I think, but it can't cover the hole of its characterization. The difference between a character on the beginning and last half of the movie is so contrast without a sleek progression. We may questioning, "why is he suddenly like that?" Though like I said, the plot twist is still unpredictable. Some casts are brilliant, but I can't help myself to dislike the human- kid due to her angry-like expression in whole of the movie. Odagiri Jo's act is so amusing to be missed. Overall, it's a nice movie to be watched with your kids. The very 30 minutes may make you boring but the last 30 minutes is incredibly enjoyable for a trilingual movie (chinese, Korea, Japanese). It also gives good value through the story and heartwarming ending that will make you stay until the credits really comes out ;)
