Barbie (2023)
This is not a Barbie film - watch Life Size instead
This movie is all about Ken. And this was a very big issue for me as it was so hyped up to be a 'feminist' film. Was there a big Barbie production number with Margot Robbie singing? Ken has - at least two big song and dance numbers. Sure it started with Barbie asking who she really is, but in the end it was Ken who asked the big questions and got some answers too - if you could even find your way into this mess of a fluff. At least this film have taught me that if a movie is too heavily promoted which even included a Barbie burger meal set or Barbie milk tea, it must be that desperate to sell because it must be that bad.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
one of the best Disney live-action film
Finally Disney decided to get a lead star that can actually sing!!! Javier and Melissa were so good, the animation and effects may be too much but who cares, it is underwater after all. My daughter loved this film so much, completely mesmerized by all the underwater scenes, and so I think this one hit the mark when it comes to captivating the young audience. I am not that happy though with the new almost forgettable songs that were addee. Think they were too different from the original ones and unnecessary. Overall it is really fun to watch especially compared to the previous remakes that were poor copycats of the original.
Senior Year (2022)
not so bad as I thought
Ok, I watched this film thinking it would just be grotesque toilet humour but it was actually fun - it's either you get the jokes or you don't. The most redeeming part of this film is Rebel herself (looking healthier and happier) and her younger version (Angourie Rice). They both got me pleasantly interested in Stephanie's life because she has depth and intelligence though at first glance she seems shallow. Unfortunately the film still follows the formulaic teen-school set up where you have Queen bees and her minions and good-looking dudes that will only look good for as long as it include the underdogs.
The Almond and the Seahorse (2022)
beautiful, carefully made film
What I love most about the film is how it centred around the fragility of love and loss . It's top-notch cast and acting and I'm happy to see Rebel take on something very different. I only hope that the promotion and posters of the film doesn't focus too much on the love affair between Rebel and Charlotte's characters because the film is not about this at all. It infuriates me to see people making snide remarks about gender representation and themes on sexuality in film and how "they are forced" to see films "like this" nowadays (wake up people- we all really need to move forward). This film is so much more if we can all just watch and appreciate it in its entirety.
Bewitched (2005)
annoying to watch
This is one of the most annoying movies I've ever seen. Is this supposed to be charming? There is absolutely no chemistry between the couple and it all just felt superficial.
Time Out of Mind (1947)
film noir that almost read like a Victorian gothic
Not a bad film and a good example how during this period films are just made for men and by men. It infuriates me to think what women do for such a bratty boy - but I can't really blame this on a film made during this period. It was just the way it has been.
Trese (2021)
monotonous isn't cool - it's just plain boring
I quite like the premise of Filipino mythical characters as very much part of the modern world but the storylines do not work. And please please please get people who can really speak Filipino properly. Even native speakers might have trouble understanding some Tagalog lines because they were not pronounced correctly at all.
Cruella (2021)
another Emma Stone miscast - but the other Emma is fab!
Emma Stone as Cruella is not convincing at all - she never came across as wickedly genius but mostly plain Jane dressed up and perhaps a bit drunk. It is a shame the movie's lead act is not about the fabulous Emma Thompson's role.
