Ab Tak Chhappan (2004)
Engaging crime drama, Nana Patekar is awesome...
Crime drama genre is just like the chess game, if handled sensibly and very seriously. Its like you don't notice the motive or intention behind any move played by players ( in a movie, there are protagonist and antagonist) But as soon as the game comes towards climax, and protagonist checkmates the villain, you think of all those moves in sequence and how those moves trick the opponent to fall into his own trap. This game becomes more interesting and engaging when you get to know thinking behind every move played by the players. This is what director Shimit Amin achieved, with his brilliant direction, in this film by portraying each character and their role in main story which makes the movie one of the best crime drama movie.
When you first see the poster and Nana Patekar in it with a tag line like "If I have to think about what's right and what's wrong just like you guys (addressing to the readers), then Who will do it (the killing)", u get the feeling that you will get to see something very interesting on the screen.
The fearless encounter specialist, with very supportive commissioner of Mumbai Police Department to perform his duty without any restriction to clean the underworld and at the same time struggling to keep himself away from becoming a victim of jealousy of his own department member, faces difficulties while doing his job when a new commissioner is appointed. And execution of new orders from commissioner about an encounter leads to set a chain of incidents which create a gripping mind game.
The depth in the character of Sadhu Agashe is wholeheartedly portrayed by legendary Nana Patekar with nuances and remarkable detailing. The dialogue delivery, body language and attitude of this actor is perfect for fearless Encounter Specialist. At the same time Nana Patekar portrays a loving family man, a protective father, frustrated cop. His facial expressions were outstanding while having a dialogue with his colleague about how cops are puppets of the politicians and system. All the other supporting actors play their role very well. Special mentions are Yashpal Sharma and Nakul Vaid.
The character theme for Nana's character created by Salim-Sulaiman suits that character. The editing is tight and doesn't lose the hold and pace. Story and screenplay are awesome. Dialogues given to Nan's character are quirky and help build the character strongly. Dialoges between Nana and Don also add some humor in scenes. Cinematography is OK. Overall a good crime drama with magic touch of Nana Patekar is what Ab tak Chhapaan can be well described as. And yeah it is worth having along shelf life on DVDs.
Sabotage (1936)
Brilliant film, cleverly concluded
A masterpiece, brilliant screen writing and story. Engaging drama. Actors also acted good. At the end, all the evidences of murder are destroyed due to bomb explosion and the inspector tries to remember whether the lady told him that she murdered her husband before the explosion or after the explosion but he is not sure. That scene was a classic and can be called as trademark of Hitchcock film.
The Holiday (2006)
A good Fairytale...worth watch for Kate, Jude and Hans's performance
A straightforward fairy tale-like story having no surprising moments, predictable screenplay, worth watching for the acting of Kate Winslet, Jude Law and soulful music by Hans Zimmer. Kate Winslet and Jude Law both steal the show and make you feel the emotions the character is feeling. Kate delivers very brilliant performance while portraying a confused girl, struggling with her emotional conflicts. Hans Zimmer created on of the loveliest theme a romantic-comedy film has ever had. Direction is okay. Memorable for Kate and Jude's characters.
Rama Madhav (2014)
Great opportunity to experience the glorious era of Maratha Empire with the background of emerging love story
"Rama Madhav" ,as movie depicts, is not only the love story of Shreemant Peshvah Madhavrao and Ramabai, but it is also the untold story of "Shaniwarwada", a six storey palace, built in area of 6 acres, by Shreemant Peshvah Thorila Bajirao . I believe that taking a decision to direct and produce a periodic drama film is really appreciable and risky task as this genre has its unique demands such as talented and experienced cast, intense research of characters and language, expensive sets and costumes which causes swelling of budget. I must say that the movie is brilliantly made film which depicts the eternal love story of Rama-Madhav when forces of Maratha military conquered Delhi. Maratha Empire was at its Zenith and Madhavrao, in his short life of 29 years, helped spread the empire all over India, fighting against external forces like Nijamshah and Afghan invaders as well as internal enemies like Raghunathrao, who was his uncle and very brave Maratha warrior. Movie also portraits character of Raghunathrao aka Raghobadada and his emotionally disturbed state when he came to know his mistakes that caused Madhavrao to suffer many consequences. The scenes showing emotional collapse and death of Peshwah Balaji Bajirao aka Nanasaheb Peshave when he heard that Vishwasrao and Sadashivrao aka Bhau got killed in the third battle of Panipat, arrival of look-a-likes of Sadashivrao as no one knew whether Bhau got killed in the battle or was alive because his dead- body was not identified on the battlefield, the dialogues between lead couple and climax scene of Rama going "Sati" after death of her husband, are fantastic. Hugeness and grandeur of Shaniwarwada was eye pleasing. Excellent cinematography. Fabulous performances by Prasad Oak, Mrunal Kulkarni, Ravindra Mankani, Shruti Marathe and Alok Rajwade, Parn Pethe. The tour of Shaniwarwada when Rama enters the palace for the first time and her exploration was memorable. Background score was good. Ganpati Aarti was very creatively composed song by Anand Modak. Production design was excellent. The film was must watch for those who love to watch period films as it is best opportunity to experience the glorious era of Maratha Empire.
