good, but it could've been better
20 January 2008
Primarily, I was shocked that the VHS version (which we've owned for years, but I just saw recently for the first time) said this movie was rated PG, but once I got into it, there was some very graphic content - especially for a movie made in 1965! According to IMDb, it's rated PG-13, but that is certainly not what the case said! Additionally, I found a good deal of the content to be "assumed" and glossed over quite vaguely. It was often quite confusing - and I am not one to be confused with movies! Although it was beautifully done and worth the 3.5 hours to watch it, I found I had to read the book to really understand what was going on.

As a Long-Time Lover of the Books, I Must Recommend This Movie!
9 July 2007
I was very impressed with this movie. Actually, I was a little surprised (now I feel ashamed to admit that!) that the American Girls movies are such quality films! So many books that are turned into movies made for TV and such are not very good (and not true to the books at all), for example, the Dear America series.

However, I personally was an avid American Girls fan when I was younger, and Felicity was my first doll and the first series I finished. I appreciated how much American Girls taught me about historical times from the eyes of young girls... perhaps they are not always completely historically accurate in the nitty-gritty details (as one user commented on the black lace on her dress and how Felicity has a non-family, apprentice as an escort), but I think the main ideas are present. She is an inspiring character, and always has been to me. I hope girls will appreciate this work of art as much as I did! However... as a warning to anyone who is a dedicated reader like I was... the movie's plot does not follow the books chronologically. All the important events are included in the movie, and nothing new is added, but things are diced up and mixed around. It confused me a little, but I understand it was for movie continuity. Anyone who has not read the book will not think twice about the sequence, and I'm sure even those who have will be able to forgive the writers!

Powerful Movie!
30 October 2006
This movie was jaw-dropping. It was so blatant and direct, it was painful to watch, and even more painful to think about the fact that these things really did happen.

The black-and-white filming threw me off at first, but then I realised that it was very effective and had an element of sophistication that I don't believe a colour film would have had.

However, the rating of 'R' was very well-deserving - the violence was shocking, for one.

I personally think, tho, that it could have done without the sex. Thus, I'm obligated to give this movie a 9.

better than I expected!
26 March 2006
I thought it might be a little cheesy at first, but as soon as I started watching it, I was instantly enthralled. The filming alone almost made me cry - it was beautifully done. The cameraman was absolutely phenomenal.

I thought the actors fit their parts perfectly - a rare thing for me, since I am usually very finicky with certain actors after reading the book. They were wonderful.

And of course, being a music student, I found particularly interesting how authentic the piano sounded. It had the slightly muted aspect that pianos of that time frame had, and that really excited me! This was a gorgeous movie and immediately made it to my top 10 list. I have always loved the book, and this version of the movie is perfect.

I strongly recommend it!

a great parody on fairy tales!
28 July 2005
It definitely starts out as a cheesy, girly fairytale... It's so sappy, it makes you laugh! But then it has an actual plot, which is exciting and unpredictable! This is one movie that I could watch time and time again and never become bored with it! I can nearly quote every line of the movie, and I still enjoy each viewing just as much as the last! I can't say there are any great values presented - although there's nothing questionable, really - but it's just a fun movie to sit down and laugh at. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good laugh at some REALLY funny stuff - not just the ordinary, cookie cutter jokes that most other movies provide. I also loved the storyline - it was cute and touching, and while the outcome was obvious from the beginning (as all fairy tales are), the path on which the characters would take to produce such an outcome was very interesting. It is a great movie! I strongly recommend it!

A Tale of Two Cities (1980 TV Movie)

Wonderful movie, full of emotion
17 February 2005
I thought this was an incredible movie, especially for being an '80's movie. Most movies from the '80's hardly impress me, but this was an undoubtable exception. We watched this in my history class and I was honestly shocked at the emotion and feeling put into every part and the realism represented by the film-makers. Very historically correct, which especially impressed me. It was a very good representation of Dickens' wonderful book, which I read last summer and plan on reading again as a result. I was literally in tears, and in front of my history class, too! It was very moving and aroused a feeling of sympathy in my heart. The theme of absolute love was shown well and made a great impact. Wonderful movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was surprised just how closely it followed the book and history as well.
