Wild Wild West (1999)
Lots of fun!
Man, I can't believe how many bad reviews are posted here. Obviously, those folks can't enjoy a comic-book adventure pairing sci-fi, westerns, and comedy. This hit the mark with the writing and dialogue. Ok, sure, some was corny but that was the fun of it. The chemistry btwn the actors was brought thru to the screen, so I know they had a blast making this. If people are going to try to take this seriously, of course they will be disappointed. I loved the banter btwn West and Loveless: it couldn't be gotten away with now, with the ultimate happenings regarding political correctness. Brannagh almost stole the movie with his perfect portrayal of the baddie, and absolutely nailed the southern accent. Bottom line, take it for what it's worth and go with the flow. It's meant to be fun and light-hearted, with silliness and anachronisms abounding. But again...that's the fun of it!
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
Doesn't follow the book!!
I had looked forward to this movie so much after having read the book but little did I know I was in for disappointment.
The first glaring difference was Percy's age: he is supposed to be 12, NOT 17! There was no good reason for aging him. It also completely uproots the entire prophesy given in this first chapter, of a demi-god who would change the fate of Olympus on his or her sixteenth birthday, a storyline continued thru the next four books. Also, Annabeth's hair is supposed to be blonde, matching Athena's hair. Why make her a brunette? With an estimated budget of $95k, there certainly was enough money for hair dye. 🙄
I have always said this: why on Earth would someone want to do a movie version of a book but make major changes which change the entire story??? It makes absolutely no sense and it's an insult to the author of the book. I understand leaving out a few minor events for time purposes but not gutting the story.
My viewing of Percy Jackson movies ended with this one. Haven't seen the second and never plan to, unless I am in the hospital with absolutely nothing else to do, tethered to the bed by an IV and a catheter, practically at death's door.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
Very well done
We just watched this movie, and except for the minor gore, it was an excellent story. Benjamin Walker deserved an award for his acting, as did the makeup department. He captured Lincoln like no other, and looked JUST LIKE HIM to boot. Kudos to the makeup folks bc they transformed Benjamin into Lincoln. I actually did a double take when I saw him. Disappointed that the American public doesnt, in general, like this sort of thing, but I thought it was great. Two thumbs up!
Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare (2010)
I thought it was great!!
I am a die-hard fan of Scooby Doo, having grown up with the original, so I have been hesitant to watch any of the new stuff, but....after having seen Camp Scare bc of my kids, I have to say that I loved it! They maintained the flavor of the original, with the music, the humor, and the characters. It's just an updated version. The story was great too. Writing done well, tight plot, suspenseful.
As for the swimsuits on Daphne and Velma, I have to say that i thought they were tasteful. Since we hardly ever saw the gang in clothing other than what they always wore, it was refreshing to see them in something different. And I loved that they gave Velma some curves. I always hated that they drew her as so stocky and shapeless. Im guessing that they wanted us to focus on her brains, and to draw a character more true to life, which is fine, but I always felt like she kinda got shortchanged.
I did kinda take issue with making Daphne somewhat of an airhead: squealing with delight that someone liked Velma while totally missing the insult that the ranger gave her. Also, putting her in Daisy Dukes was a bit much: regular shorts would have been fine, and that's just because we had already seen some skin when she wore the bikini. Really? Was it necessary to see more? Other than that, i thought she was a kick- ass chick: she sacrificed her scuba tank to get rid of the Fishman while risking drowning and she was a lot smarter than in older series.
I got a kick out of finding out that Mark Hamill did the voices of Deacon, Babyface Boretti, and the old storekeeper. Cracked me up! I had no idea he was that talented in voiceovers.
I recommend this for Scooby fans all over. The true spirit of Scooby Doo is maintained, and you will enjoy it a lot!!
