Ava's Possessions (2015)
A Tame Predictable - But Good Film
Cooky. Ava's Possession doesn't rely on jumpscares, or even really anything to scare you other than the odd bit of strange makeup. What does make this film a worth while watch is the performance from the main actress, coupled with the interesting, if not predictable, story.
It's nothing bad on the film's part, and looking at the aftermath of a possession is certainly a new and interesting angle. The film seems low budget in it's sets/makeup/effects, but these are never overdone and don't seem out of place. Instead the low budget aspects seem to add to the film's overall charm.
Glad I watched it as it was quite enjoyable. I'd see myself watching again at some point and recommending!
BoJack Horseman (2014)
Fantastic entertaining satirical look at modern celebrity culture
Bojack Horseman mixes the strange, the surreal and fantastic comedy with it's own thought provoking and satirical look at modern day celebrity obsession culture.
It's easy to watch and you can turn your brain off if wanted, enjoying the funny story lines. Repeat watching doesn't diminish it, and it's full of brilliant little references (watch out for the news ticker tapes they do!) and continuing jokes not only throughout the series but the entire thing.
It sounds strange to say but Bojack Horseman also contains some great relatable lessons and events. It's cringe worthy to see the way Bojack deals with some of his situations, but he's always trying to do the best thing, even if it isn't what everyone else thinks! It's a true joy to watch, and having just watched the entire second season I believe thats been even better than the first. Character and story development continues and never seems out of place or character. Filled with charming and clever jokes, references and stories this is Netflix's best original series. Will Arnet as the voice of Bojack is fantastic and truly makes the character.
Serial Mom (1994)
Very enjoyable
Funny, quaint, executed well.
It's not really a horror film, but more a mixture of slasher and comedy. A refreshing change as the protagonist is a mother, and her family and acting provide fantastic dark comedy.
The pace of the film is good, progressing the story in interesting and unpredictable paths, with a satisfying end.
Some interesting cinematography and cool shots of action unfolding. The film is kind of cheesy, but in a good way. It's fun to watch and doesn't seem to have any lulls.
The films other strength is its believability. It doesn't have many moments you think "That wouldn't happen, they wouldn't do that" etc, and it's fairly clever at setting this up.
Wreckage (2010)
Don't waste your time
The film takes a long time to get going, and even then we're 'treated' to a very boring series of events.
Terrible wooden acting from most of the cast surrounds a story that provides no excitement or intrigue at all. Usually at least in films like this the deaths are more inventive, or there's a quirky killer, but this film fails at this horribly.
Predictable & typical. Maybe it would have been considered 'passable' some years ago, but for a 2010 film it should be ashamed. It also lacks some of the charm that you can occasionally get from a low budget film.
The only reason I watched this was because of Aaron Paul, he's hardly in it, and when he is plays a terribly one dimensional character (par for the course in this film).
No shock. No horror. No interest. No story. No film.
Doghouse (2009)
An interest concept executed poorly
From the outset of the first 30 seconds of the title screen introducing the characters you can see what this film will be about. Low budget, overly British, chav'y, misogynistic.
It lacks any charm, and whilst the idea for the story is interesting, it's executed in a terrible way. The film gets into the 'action' almost too soon, I'd have enjoyed more suspense and build up (within the first 10 minutes the protagonists know whats happening and are deeply involved). The setting is alright, but could have been bigger, and you feel the actors are basically just playing themselves. Danny Dyer in particular plays a very horrible version of himself. With only a couple of likable characters in the film you find yourself disillusioned from their troubles and any investment in the story is one of "what caused this to happen", which is shortly lived.
Again a very interesting story idea, but very poorly executed. If you have to watch this, do not watch this with a loved one or any female in the room, or else you'll end up in the Doghouse!
Stitches (2012)
A Comdey Horror That Works!
I watched this film expecting it to be rubbish, especially after seeing the reviews, rating and hearing about 'low budget' on IMDb, but I'm glad to say it exceeded expectations! Comedy horrors rarely work, and throw in 'indie' to that mix and it seems like a recipe for disaster. I was expecting to turn this off after the first 15 minutes bored, but the laughs came within the first minute and carried on through.
It's not over the top laughter, and its not over the top horror. It's kind of a casual mix of both, with some Irish charm and fantastic subtle humor (reminiscent of the Naked Gun or Baseketball).
Although predictable in places, the film was an absolute joy to watch! It's obviously not a big budget film, but I think that'd almost detract from it if anymore money was spent. The actors are excellently suited for their parts, Ross Noble gives an amazing performance as the killer clown, and there's some very beautiful women in it! The story makes sense, the effects arn't as cheap as you'd expect (they won't fool anyone, but they're more than tolerable - more than I expected) and you get the feeling that everyone on the film actually had a lot of fun during the production.
Overall to summerise I'm very pleasantly surprised by this film. Its full of such lovable charm, funny off the beat moments, and the odd few shocks! It's a film you can chill out and relax watching - it's not going to leave you feeling depressed at the end, but instead maybe hopeful for a sequel! Fantastic, everyone who worked on this seriously great job. It's one I thought I'd hate, but have loved. A new favorite added to the list for sure! :) Everybody Happy?
