Mune : Le Gardien de la Lune (2014)
Fantastic directing. Garbage screenplay.
As I watched, I imagined what the directors could have done with an even 2nd-rate script.
The concept was very cool, and the imagery was inspiring.
The script was unacceptably lazy. Cliche, one-dimensional characters-unappologetically cherry picked from various other cartoons-and painfully boring dialogue ruin the experience.
The opening scene that sets up the world is so original. Then you meet the first character, and you're immediately like... ahhh damn, this is gonna be stupid.... and you'd be right.
A novel layer of CGI essentially attempts to disguise the blatant lack of narrative and story-telling.
Real shame.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
How did I ever even notice this movie?
I feel like this movie got a good reception. Why? How? It is the most wholesale formulaic rom-com I can remember seeing in the 21st century... complete with a trying-on-clothes-mantage. A complete mystery too (judging by a quick scroll through other user reviews) how the IMDB average is 7.0. Like... decent movies get a 7.0 average. Crazy Rich Asians is so forgettable, it's already blurry in my memory 48 hours out from watching.
The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter (2018)
A movie so honest, both the hunting and anti-hunting lobbies seem to hate it
This is a movie about the struggles of raising a pre-teen in the conflicting social and family environments that are typical of much of America.
Avid hunters seem to hate it because the hunting trip depicted isn't representative of a typical hunting excersise. Anti-hunting advocates hate it because it doesn't do enough to criticize the people who take part in what they deem to be a "stupid, cruel activity".
It saddens me to think that our culture is so wrapped up in political rhetoric that most people can't enjoy a movie that actually hits the nail on the head.
Are most hunting trips misadventures? Of course not. Did a former Vice President of our country accidentally shoot someone in the face during a hunting excursion? YES!
Did the movie satirize hunting? Yes. Did it take a stance on hunting regulations? NO!
This movie is a collection of verbatim conversations and situations that have actually taken place over time and in different contexts... To a tee, in my home state of KY. It's blatantly honesty is why it's difficult to stomach.
Hunters.... chill out. Anti-hunters... sorry, hunting is a thing.
