Emancipation (2022)

Black and white....
19 December 2022
Not a reference to the subject matter, but the cinematography. I get it... I get that sometimes black and white, or in this case, extremely low level of color saturation allowed, can, and has been used in an artistic way. But for the life of me, I cannot understand why such a masterpiece was done in it. This was a great movie. Great content. Great story, and based on a true story at that. WHY ON EARTH DID YOU SCREW IT UP BY REMOVING THE COLOR???? An otherwise fantastic piece. But ruined by sucking the life out of it. The imagery, and immersion that is created by films like this is wonderful. But due to no color, I felt completely disassociated from the plight of Peter. It was really hard to even stay in my seat to finish it. Stop it.... get some help...

Could have been better

Warning: Spoilers
This was a good movie. It brought a lot of real world anger that very real people deal with every day. I think it's an 8/10 for me just because of that factor. It's not some far out concept that you have to wrap your head around to immerse yourself into either the villain, or the hero's shows. We've all had these moments when driving. We go through messy divorces, and losing jobs. We've all had days that we could just go on a rampage over. I like the way this movie brought that aspect to us.but it had to go and mess it up at the last second. It just couldn't be a movie, without that awful one liner in the final scene. "Here's your courtesy tap!" I would have given it a 10 if not for that one line. The realism this movie brought, was shattered in that one moment. No one on Earth would have said that at that moment in time. All in all though, I enjoyed it.

Don't

This movie really is awful. Nicholas Cage has been washed out for a long time, which is why half of hulu is made up of his films. But I'll say this. Cage is the one saving grace this film has. Although, I can't understand half of the dialogue of the movie because he mumbles every line. The movie isn't at all realistic in terms of immersion. The plot is seriously stupid. Just awful. It was boring. It lacked life, or spark of interest. Nothing could get me into the plot. It's just watching a man mumble his way through one ridiculous scene after another until the credits roll. Just don't.

The worst

Warning: Spoilers
This is aweful, even for a low budget film. I'll tell you what bothered me the most though. In many, many parts of the film, you can see the actor who plays the killer's skin. Youcan see his plainwhite neck skin as he sits in the diner, you get a shot up his sleeve a bit later. Those are total immersion breaking shots. They ruin any ideas you could come up with about the origin of this killer. It cheapens, an already cheap plot twist. All the money and time spent on special effects and they couldn't either makeup his skin that showed, or stopped it from showing. Just an aweful movie. Any mystery is removed now from the killer, acting is horrible. It is a blessing when blondie gets sawn in half just so we don't have to listen to her try so hard.
