The Oak Room (2020)
Let me tell you a story
This story is about a movie called the Oak Room that somehow has a decent metacritic score and fan score. It's a movie where every single story is boring, the acting is terrible, and they want you to tune into these narrative threads hoping that you will be elated with how it all comes together. The 88 minutes feels like 88 hours. It comes off as a stage script.
They dropped about 10,000 F bombs in the movie as a recourse to cover up bad acting. The weird special needs acting character with the stroke mouth was really annoying as well.
There's not much to say if you wanna see pairs of people talking in a bar for 90 minutes then go for it. I guess I did it, but I was duped by the reviews.
You'll Never Find Me (2023)
Hmmm
I see a lot of good critical reviews and a lot of good fan reviews, but this is confusing to me. I nearly shut it off halfway through just because the entertainment value is significantly reduced because the whole movie basically dealt with two people just sitting in a trailer talking for the first hour and then something slightly interesting happens after that and then it ends with just more confusion. I understand the value of a slow burn movie and I'm all for it but come on. How long does an audience have to wait before we get To the potatoes. At the end it wasn't actually me it was Fish. Hahaha. This was a letdown.
Close (2022)
My fav of 2022
Wow. There's not much more I can say. How do you watch a movie that is so heartbreaking and still like it? That is the question.
This movie put you through the ringer of emotions, and it never lets up from the first frame to the last. As heartbreaking as the one child's dilemma is the other child's dilemma ends up being just as heartbreaking.
Everything was beautiful about this movie from the actors to the plot to the execution. Done with finesse, love, and care.
This was definitely my favorite movie of 2022.
It's right up there with an anatomy of a fall and I'm not scared off Warren films go figure. I love the market they know how to make movies.
Anatomie d'une chute (2023)
Awwsome
This movie was amazing. I loved every aspect of it. The boy was a stand out and I love how he brought it all together with such a tragic ommission.
This is one of those movies where you don't really know what happened, but you feel satisfied anyway about what likely happened.
There's not much more to say, but since I have to fulfill a word count, I will say the acting was great. The scenery was great. The dilemma was great. It was also interesting seeing how the court system in France differ from that of the US.
So many of the scenes were poignant, and everyone played an amazing part. In the context of the film.
Amazing feat. Especially since you don't see American films like this you have to go to the foreign market to see anything good nowadays.
The Bad Shepherd (2024)
Boring and silly
Who are these four central characters anyway? Why are they even together on a hunting trip? Who is the protagonist to root for? Why do they do what they do? I probably would have this review contain spoilers if there was anything possible to spoil. There isn't. It was monotonous and painfully boring. I'm not exactly sure where these other reviews came from. I watched it only because it is a 6.5 rating but that only came from 10 reviews so I'm assuming they must be from the actors who made it. Hahahaha. Because no one in their right right mind is going to rate this movie more than a three. So do yourself a favor and avoid paying the money for this. If you really need to see it, just wait until it's free somewhere and I'm quite sure after the first 15 minutes you will shut it off because trust me, Nothing more happens any interest.
Boy Swallows Universe (2024)
Time jump killed it for me
I wasn't expecting an episode six time jump. It Killed the whole story for me because things just got really convoluted from there. I mean episodes one through six were a little bit loopy anyway with the red phone etc. But what I loved about the series was the endearing child actor who played Eli in his younger years and as soon as he was out of it, I got lost. Then episode seven we find Lyle's head in some sort of container? The climax seemed to mimic that of Harrison Ford in the fugitive, when he confronted his old medical pal, at a symposium.
The movie just went off the rails. First off, I couldn't understand why the mother was in prison in the first place. Why did they need her to be in prison for four years? I didn't quite understand that. Why not just abduct Lyle and leave the rest of the family alone or kill them all?
Plus every single adult in this show was trash. The way they treated children. I know it was the 80s but come on. The female journalist told Eli (when he was older) that she "likes to get to the bottom of things" then why didn't she do so when Eli was 13? And then Eli fell in love with her even though there would've at least been a 10 year age gap? He didn't seem interested in any other female in the whole movie but for some reason he kind of had eyes for the milf. Although none of the characters except for him physically aged in the story, so by episode seven, they looked all the same age anyway.
I just felt like everything didn't add up. I was Lost when I suddenly found Eli as a 17 or 18 year old.. And then we had the terminator druglord. Shot in the face, mowed down by a car and still kept going on his cycle. For a moment, I thought he might survive his skyscraper fall. Then we had the older brother who in a couple of episodes just couldn't talk and then suddenly he started talking and you had to wonder why the show portrayed him as a mute to begin with. You had Lyle as a major character, and then he was abducted, and there was some hope that you might see him again someday as part of the mystery of the series, but then he was just dead. Then there was Teddy who nurtured the relationship with the mother for four years while she was imprisoned and then in one odd explosive scene he beat the hell out of her and then that was over. And what about the girl with the muscle disorder who was supposed to die?
I don't know. It did not all add up.
I gave it a six because the character of Eli, when he was 13 was captivating. His journey and coming of age story was the hook. Once the story took that away, it was just all just about let's see how it ends attitude.
All in all started off as one movie, ended as another and I like the first episode the best they should've figured out a way to resolve the story while the kid was 13.
Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer (2023)
What da fuh
I'm not sure why this has a 7.1. I thought this was a lame standup and if I paid for it, I would've been livid. He looked tired. The jokes were lame. Actually when you break it down, there was probably only like three in the course of the hour spread across three stories. What was the watery grave joke? He should've listened to his wife on that one. Then he spent 20 minutes on this person that attacked him. Idk. Maybe because he forgot to bring his vape on the stage where they wouldn't let him. When he said he was going to end with a story and it was 20 minutes before the end of the show I said hell no I am not listening to this story for 20 minutes just to hear one punchline. This she felt more like going to a library and having some old man read the story to me. Not a good special at all.
Reacher (2022)
Devolution
Is it me or does the first three episodes of season two just wreck all the wonderful feelings I had about season one?
We take the mystique away from a loaner character, who handles business, add a team, which, of course, has to include a couple of power women. They all look beautiful, no matter what timeline is being displayed. While the villain, Robert Patrick, looks old and grizzled. Intentional? No doubt. We take the asexuality out of Reacher and have him sexually partnered with a woman. We make sure that every good character has an answer to Goddamn thing without even consulting Google. Including complex password encryption. That their knowledgeable on every single facet of everything pertinent, including how casinos operate, to every other mundane thing...numbers, puzzles, it is just so freaking lame. Vincent.
So far I'm not liking season two. It is a huge departure from the first season. To the point that I'm freaking frustrated.
The scenes with Reacher are like...OK you're not fighting assassins...you're fighting bar patrons?
Hopefully the next episode, somehow restores the credibility, but somehow I doubt it. I understand these are all based on various novels, but hopefully they choose another novel in the series for season three that gets us back to the season one roots.
The Royal Hotel (2023)
Ummm who are these critics
So I don't know... I love Julia Garner, but what in the world? It's hard to trust critics anymore. I used to watch or not movies based on critic reviews. I don't know if I'm getting older and critics are getting younger. Something is happening that is for sure. I mean the movie was mildly interesting. If you just like to see a normal life of two people backpacking and becoming bartenders in Australia. I mean Julia Gardner's character was pretty uptight especially for someone who concedes to work in a bar in Australia serving a bunch of coal miners, which I'm sure is never going to be a great experience. But I think that's part of the point.... she really didn't want to be there and her dumb ass friend had no problems with it.
I was hoping Julia was going to be a little more edgier.
Anyway, whatever. I watched because I was able to parooze the news and Facebook while the movie played out, but it's nothing anybody needs to see.
If you want to see a month in the life of couple of naive young bartenders, go for it!
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Self indulgent bore fest
Oh boy. I see that I am going against the grain with this but I am sorry it is what it is.
After finally getting to the end of this movie, I just kept wondering who this was made for. If you wanted to bring attention to this datelinesque tragedy why not make it two hours shorter and target the younger generations, who clearly have more sensitivities toward these issues than older people. There aren't too many people under the age of 50 who would even sit through this. If I hadn't been with someone, I wouldn't have either.
It moved at a snail's pace throughout. It was quiet, lulling, and it hit me, scratching my head as to why the people that were being systematically murdered couldn't easily figure out who was doing it. Especially the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio, who was bedridden for three hours over the course of however many weeks, months, or years progressively getting worse, and yet she could not put two and two together that Leonardo was poisoning her even as he injected Daley shot into her body. Please.
And then, after finding out that he had a hand in systematically murdering all her sisters and her mother, she still was able to keep a straight face, and offer some level of compassion and decency toward him. The director did also. Were we supposed to sympathize with or dislike Leonardo's deplorable character?
Then, on top of it the anti-climax where is the villains served a couple of years and then went to live out the rest of their lives to ripe old age is just didn't settle. I mean if that's the true story and fine. And maybe that's the point which is supposed to spark outrage from viewers.
From a historical perspective, the story was so small in scope and focus that I felt it offered very little to expose much of the white man evil that existed in these time periods.
On this one I love the players, but hated the game. Much like Oppenheimer just another overly long snore and bore fest that played out way longer than needed. Jesus.
The Boogeyman (2023)
Lights out ripoff
I was excited about this movie, but darn...the movie Lights Out was great. This felt like that movie copycatted only a lot worse. I thought it would be creepy and subtle but this ended up no different than any other monster under the bed B- movie. It also seemed to suggest the monster latches to people experiencing trauma. The movie Smile did that gloriously well and again this movie didn't develop that idea or notion too well either.
My advice watch the Babadook, Smile, Lights Out, the foreign movie Terrified, or a host of other films that were far superior than this unfocused hack of a movie.
Run Sweetheart Run (2020)
The movie should be called: tampons needed
I'm sorry this movie was one of the most annoying movies I've watched recently. Every 10 minutes there's a reference to the lead character needing a tampon and it just grew so irritating that I couldn't stand it any longer. They showed her on the toilet like eight times, putting a tampon into herself.
Why didn't she just get in the car and drive until dawn? She made every predictable move possible, left her wounds gaping the whole time, whined and cried,
The lady just was helpless the whole time. I thought women in this day and age were supposed to be presented as strong, confident, and impressive. This was just sad.
And snnoying. Did I say that?
Stupid.
Coffee & Kareem (2020)
Wow
I have never seen a movie where a child was more repugnantly portrayed. I feel bad for the child actor who was exploited to make this movie. The producers, his parents, and all associated parties should be grossly ashamed.
Don't watch it. Or watch it if you want your jaw to be on the floor in awe.
From (2022)
I am bored
Why so many good reviews, people? This is borrrrring. Come on. U know when the only action or suspense happens after lights out and the show is set 95% in daylight you got nothing but blah blah blah until nighttime. And then...maybe.
The characters are annoying too. The priest...annoying. The guy walking around with the ham radio...annoying.
And the whole corny tradition of choosing your place of residence by selecting a rock or a flower. Loooorrrddd. Silllly.
I don't know what else to say. 🤷♂️
Jigeum uri hakgyoneun (2022)
4 episodes too long
The series wasn't toooo bad but it could've been done in eight parts instead of twelve. At the midpoint it started dragging on way too much first with the group assembling in the choir room lamenting and arguing, then the roof for two episodes, lamenting and arguing, then we got a little action as they moved from the roof to the closet in the gym, and we had to spend time with them crying, lamenting and arguing some more for an episode and a half. Looord snooze fest. As diverse and fleshed out as the main characters were they weren't all that likable or interesting. I loved when they shared a candy bar in the closet as if they hadn't eaten in weeks when only 24 hours had gone by since the infection started.
Then the one antagonist kept getting pushed out windows and pushed off the roof and then he kept coming back so that plot point got a little stale. I think if I had zombie superpowers the last thing I would care about is my missing eye and getting revenge for it. After all, his body was crunched, twisted, bit, smashed, mashed... he looked like hell so why was he worried about his eye for?
I think this would've been a lot better if they had only trimmed the melodramatic repetitive fat and kept it to six episodes.
Anywho...
Old Strangers (2022)
Goodness
I typically have a rule where as I don't watch any movie that gets a fan rating of less than five on Imdb. This movie hovered at 4.9 so I thought it was close enough. Darn. That logic did not pay off.
Low production, bad acting (though I did slightly enjoy the character with the frizzy blonde hair sporting the greatest american hero look), slow, meandering, and like watching a video in Slo-mo. Where every frame is torture while you wait for the punchline of why you even filmed in Slo mo.
First of all, an alien lifeform that needs a host to do its thing, taking up refuge in the middle of the mountains where only one human comes by every hundred years is not very... Intelligent.
Second of all if you touch some strange alien bubble with your bare hand and go out of your way to take off your glove so that your flesh can touch it you pretty much deserve what you get.
Third, if you touch the alien bubble and then your finger becomes necrotic within the matter of an hour it's probably best to leave the mountains and go right to the ER.
Yes this was among one of the dumbest least pleasurable movies that I ever stood witness to in my 48 years. To be fair though I try to avoid movies with less than a 5.0 rating on IMDb as I've already stated so I guess I was asking for it. Henceforth, I don't have a lot of movies in the less than 5.0 rating Spectrum to compare this to. If I did I'm quite sure it may rate a little higher because there's a lot of dumb crap out there to watch. Thankfully I avoid most of it due to my extreme filtering process.
My advice is to filter this one out or watch it when you're really drunk so that you pass out immediately.
The Night House (2020)
Boring
I am an intelligent man. I'm so tired of these annoying movies they got great reviews and have a little entertainment value.
This is just an annoying movie and if you have a glass of wine while watching it you ain't gonna understand crap. Some woman running around trying to figure out some BS.
What the heck is wrong with our critics today they're giving this junk primo ratings?
The King of Staten Island (2020)
A redemptive last 15 minutes
I don't know. Halfway through I almost shut this off because I felt the main character was more of an antagonist than a protagonist. I guess I don't understand arrested development or don't respect the idea behind it but to have a main character that is loathsome through 90% of the movie creates a very unbalanced and uncomfortable movie experience. If the person in question was 10 years old I would've understood this movie better. I guess at the end there is hope but it was hard to make it to that point. The "humor" from this movie was derived from unsettling character attributes.
And the main characters mouth was just way too big.
Braqueurs (2015)
Great little movie
Wonderfully paced. A lot of action and violence. Forget American cinema do you watch anything good you got to go foreign.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Good
Loved that it wasn't wartered down get a pg-13 rating. Some aspects of Jolie's character were a bit silly and they tried a little too hard making Jon B. Look tough while his wife went around kicking everybody's ass. AnyWho, it's worth the watch just for the thrills and violence.
Boys from County Hell (2020)
Boring
Some good visuals on and off but too much talking, walking,...pacing was terrible.
The Toll (2020)
Dumb and boring
Hard to believe so many brilliant and creative people out there who never get a shot and for some reason this drivel gets to see the light of day. Only in America.
The Empty Man (2020)
Senseless boring drivel
The subject is the review.
Absurd waste of time. Who read this script and thought they had a winner? That's what I want to know.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
WTF
One of the most stupid, annoying, boring movies of all time. 66 metacritic...W.....T....F.
End of story.
Knuckleball (2018)
Good stuff
Crazy....and the kid's defense systems weren't beyond an initial setup, which kept his antics from being over the top. He fought the good fight....and won. Bloody, tense and wild.
