Gurotesuku (2009)
Great in so many ways
I was surprised by the diversity of what this movie has to offer; humor, horror, porn, the twist, the fantastic ending. The first time I saw it was an eye-opening (haha) cathartic experience, it's helped me cope with chronic pain ironically enough, the film's weirdly inspiring in a way. Obviously there's tons of disturbing stuff but the strength of the main characters, especially the courageous male, bring something to gain from watching. The ending is not that unrealistic btw
Black Mirror: White Bear (2013)
One of the most powerful Black Mirror episodes.
While this episode may be one of the most difficult to stomach, it is also one of the more daring, intense, and powerful episodes of the series up until this point. It's structured masterfully, the acting is incredible, and it brings up questions that society is often afraid to answer; at what point do we go too far in the name of justice? At what point does punishment cross the line of morality and cross into the realm of sadism?
Throughout most of the episode, the audience is left just as confused as Victoria. Tension steadily arises and does not cease until long after the episode has ended. This confusion was wholly intentional, as we are meant to be seeing things exactly the way our main character is; confused, uncertain, frustrated, fearful. The only things I can complain about with this episode are the fact that Victoria can become annoying due to the fact that she is almost constantly whining, and that this episode mostly relies on its ending. Its ending is powerful, though, as we discover that Victoria is being punished on a loop, for the entertainment of a large crowd and the entirety of the internet, for a crime that she does not remember, as she is repeatedly being electrocuted heavily so that her memory is wiped. Now the audience must ask questions. We know that her crime was awful; still, though, she didn't actually kill the child, only assist in the kidnapping and be compliant in allowing her murder and recording it. Is this not the same as what is being done to Victoria? How can you punish someone for a crime they don't remember committing? If she doesn't remember it, or even who she is, is the person being punished really the same as the person who committed the crime?
Similarly to the episode "Shut Up and Dance", in season 3, episode 3, Charlie Brooker makes us ponder upon the harsh punishments given to people who have committed crimes against children. He gives us time with the character, some of the horrors they have/will experience, and then reveal the nature of their crime. Does this person deserve a fate far worse than death? It's up to us and the rest of society to decide.
Black Mirror: Shut Up and Dance (2016)
Absolute mind f*ck. Felt like a full-length movie. An hour of horror, anxiety, and awe.
This sh*t seriously f*cked me up, and I knew the twist before I even saw the episode, though this didn't upset me too much because spoilers tend to make me enjoy the content more.
Regardless, I found myself forgetting what I already knew about Kenny and starting to blend into his character and feeling like I was him as the episode progressed, even though at the beginning I was analyzing his actions with disgust. This guy's just a really good actor, I guess. The anxiety builds and builds the further it goes, it was so bad for me that it gave me an awful headache and I started sweating. Once the true nature of Kenny's crime is revealed, it was as if I'd never been spoiled at all, it was like I was hearing it for the first time. Just because of how good the f*cking acting was!
The only thing I can complain about is that it didn't show the fight scene. Obviously it didn't have to, but I was disappointed to see the shot end and go to Hector. Not for long, though, because then you realize that they're all getting exposed anyway and their efforts were fruitless. All for nothing.
These last five minutes of the episode are beautifully shot and incredibly heavy and meaningful, especially when Kenny's mom calls him and you realize exactly what's happened. All the foreshadowing and context of his life in the beginning comes to play here. His life is ruined, his image is ruined, he's murdered a man, robbed a bank, and everyone knows that he's j*rked off to pictures of little kids. They'll find out about the other stuff too, because he doesn't get the pleasure of k*lling himself, he gets cops kindly grasping his arm to take him away.
Similar to the episode "White Bear", this episode of Black Mirror forces you to become empathetic to characters that you normally wouldn't by withholding information. Did Kenny deserve this? Without seeing the episode, I'd say yes and worse, but now I'm hesitant because I care for his character. Did Hector deserve it? (Probably.) And you never see the face of the blackmailers (heroes?)
Great acting, great cinematography, great set-up, great plot, great use of foreshadowing. It's basically a short psychological horror movie.
May (2002)
good movie. watch it alone at night
it's a good psychological horror. the pacing is a little slow, but if you're patient it's worth it. a lot of the characters who aren't the main are still pretty fleshed out, which is cool. most of the actors are good, the ending is cool and a little confusing, it's a bit gory but not too much. may is a very interesting character, and her descent into madness is pretty creepy and tense to watch. there are a few events that are genuinely disturbing. most of the movie is about building it up for the ending events, though, so don't expect the action to start for a while. that fact might make it a bit difficult to watch for the average viewer or those with a poor attention span, although i have adhd and was still engaged in the plot the entire time, because it is a really interesting plot, and the characters are very intriguing. it's a shame that the movie didn't get very much attention at the time of its release. wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 16
Shark Exorcist (2014)
zero effort. worse than a middle school short film
in the past long ago, i took a recording class in middle school and every "short film" that was made was more comprehensible than this. disregarding the quality, there's literally no story or plot in this movie. it's not even a movie. if you're buying it, you're buying it for the cover. more effort was put into the cover on the case for the movie than the actual movie, by far, as it's actually sort of not terrible, kind of. this piece of garbage was probably filmed in less than three hours. if any of the actors got paid, they're geniuses, because this took absolutely no effort or labor from them, except for the man who ran for five minutes of the movie without any cuts. he was literally just running for five minutes straight. why? i don't know. nothing in the movie is explained or clear in the slightest. the effects are horrendous. acting? horrendous. the individual shots? horrendous. i'd rather watch birdemic, and that's really saying a lot.
