Started, Ended Quickly
13 April 2024
In fairness I'm not selecting a star rating for this film so as not to influence the user "grade" considering I didn't finish watching; I invested thirty-five or so minutes (IMO star ratings should generally be given when a film is watched in its entirety). The budget appeared to be in place and the production looked nice, but the writing! And, as a result, the acting was less than good or convincing. The dialogue was unnatural and seemed to be solely expository for us viewers. My eyes were rolling within minutes. I decided early on that another 90 minutes were probably not worth the time. But, perhaps it did turn into something worthwhile....

Sam & Kate (2022)
7/10
The Cast Shines
15 October 2023
Some may feel prior to viewing Sam & Kate that the casting of film legends Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek's adult children is a gimmick to garner publicity for the film, and of course it likely was an intended angle. However, Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk are accomplished actors in their own right so the on-screen interactions are very organic and natural and in no way a distraction. One comment I've read is that Schuyler is such a natural, bright light of a presence here and I agree we should see more from her on screen. The story itself is more dramatic than the marketing would lead you to believe, which is so often the case. But the storytelling is first-rate and moves along nicely with some unexpected character developments, even though Dustin's arc is fairly predictable from the start. Spacek has the strongest and most interesting material in my opinion and she performs with her customary charm and understated artistry. It's been a real treat to see some of her later work finally pair her with other film heavyweights such as Robert Duvall, Robert Redford, and now Dustin Hoffman. Overall, a mostly dramatic film with strong and likeable performances carrying the day.

You Viewers Are Slow
26 May 2022
What's with all this boring talk. Maybe you are all slow. Sissy Spacek, J. K. Simmons? It's a master acting class. Roger Ebert said many years ago reviewing a movie, maybe it's you that is slow.

I'll share that Sissy Spacek is my favorite actress and it was such a joy to see her in a leading performance and show us all why she is so brilliant at what she does. So I could not look away at all. Never bored, but maybe those without history of this legend may not appreciate.

And besides, I thought the show was great. Sorry we'll never know the outcome of loose ends we were given. No doubt they expected a second season.

Haven't Seen Yet

Maybe will or won't. But, I was in another room while my parents watched this film. The only thing I remember, to my surprise actually, was at the end my mother said, "well, that was awful." I didn't rate the movie with this post, but her response seemed interesting to me for a movie from these professionals we admire.

Subtle and Artistic

Beautifully performed, stylishly shot, obscure. I enjoyed this movie and while I can understand why some of the user reviews question its momentum, the performances held my attention. Not for everyone, of course. Impressive debut for Maggie as director/screenwriter.

Krisha Fairchild

Ms. Fairchild is brilliant in this performance. The subject matter is disturbing yet very real for many families. I've watched the film at least three times now for the terrific acting by the star performer. I want to see more from her in the future. Intense direction.

Didn't Waste My Time on the Whole Thing
30 September 2019
Ten minutes were left on episode 4 and I turned it off. I'm a huge fan of Ryan Murphy productions and am generally drawn to his projects without question. Barbra Streisand, you dodged a bullet. Jessica Lange, kudos to your loyalty but please do not end your resume with this. Gwyneth, you gave up your career a while back so I'm assuming this was a loyalty project too. Maybe this show became brilliant in its last four hours, but I'll never know and don't care.

The L Word (I) (2004–2009)
Tina: Movie Executive?
14 February 2006
I enjoy The L Word, but this season I've found myself completely distracted by the direction of the character, Tina. Suddenly, she's a top movie studio executive?? Did I miss something from the prior seasons, but what has qualified her for this position apart from the psychic(!?); and of course that's not a "qualification". I know, suspension of belief, but this story development is absurd. And the throwaway dialogue used to open scenes ("it needs a rewrite, and then I'm sure it will be fine") is laughable.

Probably not a big deal to some, and there are certainly other and similar unlikely character transitions, but Tina's story this season has had me rolling eyes on many occasions.
