Glossary of Broken Dreams (2018)
What genre is this?
Another feat by director-writer-actor Johannes Grenzfurthner. He pulls off an almost impossible task: being seriously funny while being dead serious.
I don't even think this film can be considered a documentary. Nothing is documented, not even re-enacted, and it's also not a mockumentary or docufiction. It uses whimsical narrative and musical elements to explain political theory and philosophy. I think Grenzfurthner created his own little genre. Docufarce? Documentravesty?
The Death of Stalin (2017)
Splendid.
Director Armando Iannucci delivers another A+ political satire with The Death of Stalin, a film just as sharp, ballsy, and hilarious as his 2009 debut In The Loop. Brilliant, hilarious, unusual. Simon Russel Beale is a gem turning one of histories worst players into well, a comedic monster. Buscemi is perfect, as he always is, I laughed out loud a dozen times, at least, and after, went to looking these people up. Had to know the real stories and - amazingly - this isn't far from the truth. Congratulations to all involved.
The Stuff (1985)
The Stuff is a fantastic B horror movie.
The Stuff is strictly tongue in cheek. Everything in this movie was done for a purpose. From it's bad acting, to the playful script and many cuckoo characters...all of this works to the film's advantage. The Stuff is another great movie for the Halloween season. Another thing...The Stuff looks so damn deliciously good and creamy. I would eat it in a heartbeat. F**k being invaded by it's evilness! It looks so damn tasty!
TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard (2013)
Pirate Bay, you libertarian dream
The Internet dates more quickly than almost any other contemporary cultural signifier. This is what gave The Social Network much of its leverage: the fact that it was a period film about things that had happened six or seven years previously. Swedish director Simon Klose's absorbing, stirringly indignant but also rather melancholic documentary about the industry-speared decline and fall of the world's biggest file sharing website has a similar effect. Torrents? File-sharing? The Pirate Bay? It all feels like ancient history. Which perhaps proves the film's main point: that in the end, a system with an unlimited appetite and budget for litigation won out against the cyber-libertarians.
Traceroute (2016)
Nerds, behold!
Traceroute is a really well, put together documentary film. It is shot nicely with good sound and edited in a sublime manner to captivate the audience and keep us interested throughout the two hour run time. Not once did I ever get bored, I joined Johannes and his companions on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I totally enjoyed my time with them.
If you do so happen to be lucky enough to be given the chance to watch this documentary, embrace the geek in yourself and make sure you do. I did and I REALLY loved it.
Traceroute – a fantastic documentary, though I will never look at cheese the same way again. Bleugh.
