Fatale (2020)
LOTS OF FUN
I wasn't expecting a lot. I really just wanted the opportunity to go to the movies again and figured that a weekday day time showing with hardly anyone in the theatre would be safe. It seems like Michael Ealy has been in a ton of these movies, either playing the husband or the other man. Even so, this was a little different and the film always kept me on the edge of my seat, never bored. Sure, it borrowed from a few other movies, but then again, what film doesn't? Don't expect any academy award nominations even though Ealy, Hillary Swank and others were good in their roles. This is not that type of film. If you're looking for a day/night out with lots of film, you could do a lot worse than checking this one out.
Secret Obsession (2019)
READ THE REVIEWS
Normally I take reviews with a grain of salt because everyone has a different opinion. What some may like won't be what others do. In this case, I really should've read some reviews before watching this. The plot holes and the poor writing were the size of the Grand Canyon. I understand that most movies will have a couple of unrealistic things in the plot to keep it entertaining. That's OK, but this was a little over the top.

REALISTIC DEPICTION OF THE SYSTEM
I've worked in public child welfare for most of my life and have seen a few movie's/tv shows centering on the foster care system. This is one of the best and most realistic depictions that I've seen. Sure there were comic elements to bring in the casual viewer; after all you've got to draw an audience. Sure, there were a couple of scenes that may have been a bit unrealistic, but after all it is a movie. With those things aside, most of the rest of the movie was accurate and showed many themes that families, the foster families and social workers deal with all the time. Among these were foster families getting into this because it makes them feel good, rather than being exclusively about the children, the parentified older child with younger siblings, the acting out behavior of children that has trauma as its root cause, etc. There was only one scene that I didn't care for. That was when Octavia Spencer laughed at the notion that the father may have been involved. That's the stereotype and in some cases it's true, but in many more cases it isn't. Sometimes it means that social workers and other professionals need to do a better job of engaging the dads. Overall, a very good movie.
Confessions (2006)
Expecting More
I really wanted to like this film, but I just couldn't. . This film was really awful. I've seen several made for video movies with a predominately black cast.Practically all of these movies are shot with extremely low budgets and none of the typical frills that you find in theatrical releases. However there are still far too few roles, other than those that are typecast, for black actors and these movies do provide them with starring roles that they would not get in any other films. The vast majority of these sort of movies are not really good, and the truth is that my expectations are usually low when the cast is mostly unknowns as well as the people behind the camera. When I saw that this movie starred, among others, Tamela Jones, Bokeem Woodbine, Lynn Whitfield, Roger G. Smith, etc., I thought this would be a cut above the rest. Wrong. The only reason I watched the whole thing was because I kept telling myself that it has to get better. Alas, it never did. As much as I want to support my brothers and sisters in the art form of movies, it's got to be better than this. You can have a decent script even without a big budget. This movie certainly had recognizable names, but nothing else.
