The Gilded Age (2022)
Why not make sure the language is authentic?
I came late to this series and started watching episode 6. One character referred to her mother having her under 'house arrest', a term which did not come into use until the 1960s. I find it very odd that so many period dramas expend such effort on ensuring that costumes, buildings, behaviours and social mores are correctly depicted, but do not do the same with the language used. As I watch, a character has spoken of 'running for the hills'. Again, this is a later expression. It really does not take long to check these things. Vichyssoise soup? Early 20th century. What is the point of authenticity if it doesn't apply to all aspects of the production?
Miss Scarlet & the Duke (2020)
Enjoyable, flawed. Short series. Is that it?
As with a lot of 'historical' series, like Murdoch Mysteries or Miss Fisher, there is great attention to detail around costumes, locations, props etc., so why is there such a lack of diligence in checking the language used? 'Up to speed' was not invented until the 1970s. Many other anachronisms. Nevertheless, this short series was enjoyable enough. Not really long enough to become invested in the characters though.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Disappointed 8 year old
My eight year old son is totally obsessed with Star Wars, and has bought in to all the hype surrounding this last film. He has all the other films on DVD and has watched them over and over. So, how can I now explain to him that we cannot go and see Revenge of the Sith because it is rated 12A in the UK (13, I believe, in the US)? Surely Mr Lucas could have given some thought to his most loyal fans? My eight year old son is totally obsessed with Star Wars, and has bought in to all the hype surrounding this last film.
