Fallout (2024)
Brilliant
I never played the game. My only acquaintance with Fallout is watching the gameplay from aside a bit. So from this perspective I would say that this show was made brilliantly. From the plot to the character, to acting and effects. The characters are very deep and this is what mainly sold me the show. It's rare to see such writing lately.
The different types of people that exist in this world were portrayed very realistically, and I specifically liked the emphasis on how difficult life circumstances don't create heroes.
They also wrote Lucy's character brilliantly. They avoided of making the lately too-common mistake of writing "strong female characters" that are simply better than men just because they're female, similar to She-hulk and Rings of power. Lucy is strong because though all the traumas she went through practically from the beginning she never lost her friendliness, hope and never stopped to try to see the good in people. She's self-confident because she was brought up in a safe environment, not because she's a woman.
The acting was also great. The main ones that I personally really liked were Ella, Walton (he's always great in all of his roles), and Dave, who someone managed to look like an innocent boy in a man's body.
Anyway, highly recommend to watch this series.
Hazbin Hotel (2019)
I enjoyed it, but expected more
I enjoyed the series, it had some epic moments, but it was not good as the pilot. For me the pilot was 10/10.
The series had some great music, but the majority wasn't good or felt straight up cringe.
The last battle felt rushed, or maybe not well thought of enough. It felt like it was too easy. They used the metal that was always available to defeat an army of angels that were doing the massacre for thousands of years. No one thought before to defend hell that way?
The series had some very dark moments, next to many funny ones. It was nice to see another cartoon for adults, especially a musical. I'm a sucker for music in movies.
I'll be waiting for season 2 eagerly.
Severance (2022)
Finally something good among the low quality productions I keep seeing lately
Finally I got to see a good series among all the bad quality productions that are coming out lately. This series biggest strength is the writing. They made the feeling of work environment and the interactions feel so real. Not over dramatic, but reserved as you would expect from normal people in such a situation.
The second biggest strength is the acting. The actors preformed wonderfully in a way that completely opened a way to identify with them.
The thing I fear is that it seems they're walking in a way of over complicating things and I worry that they'll end like many other series where the over-complication done in such a way that the writers themselves don't know how to get out of it and the audience starts loosing interest because the events don't feel logical anymore. Similar to what they did about Mark's wife.
This show made me contemplate about philosophical issues in our modern life.
I hope the second season won't be any less good than the first one.
Peacemaker (2022)
Really liked it
I liked this series more than I thought I would. It has this rare combination of humor with drama. The characters feel real, relatable and likable.
Sure, it has its flaws. I think the most major one for me is this concept that can be seen in many movies: where a big crisis is threatening the earth and all can be solved with one act. One mission to accomplish and all is good.
I especially enjoyed seeing how they made Peacemaker's personal growth and character's development.
Marry Me (2022)
For some reasons too many romantic movies are stupid. This is one of them
I could kinda go with the flow of some events in this movie, though not really believable. Like getting married to a complete stranger, like having the marriage be validated even though the "priest" didn't know the "groom's" name, like deciding to stay married. But some things were just too much.
Like when Charlie, the guy who the movie tried to portray as being smart, leveled and good, decided for no particular reason to dump Kat. Oh no, actually he did have a reason: they were from two different worlds. Something that didn't bother him when they started to get close to each other and had sex. But how did he dump her? He went out of his way to get to where she was celebrating, to get inside that party just to ruin her special evening. Because it just couldn't wait a day. With no normal communication like adults who respect each other should do. That was the behavior of the "good" guy. I pity the personal life of the writer who sees it as normal behavior.
At the end of the movie for some reason she decided to rush to where he was (after that treatment? Why?) just to ask of him to get back together (again, why?) and it was like this:
Him - "But we're from two different worlds".
Her - "We should try anyway".
Him - "Okay".
End of movie. The big conflict was resolved.
Some moments of the movie ever boring, some really cringy. Kat was supposed to be no older than 35. I didn't know Jennifer Lopez's age but it was laughable because she looked about 45. Later I read that she's 52. She might look younger, but no 20 years younger.
The character's lacked depth.
It had some good parts: Jennifer acted really well. The music gave a nice vibe to the movie. Some parts were interesting. But that's pretty much all.
Hori-san to Miyamura-kun (2021)
Started good, continued less good
Aside from the sexual harassment of a student by a teacher at the beginning the series started good. Miyamura sparks interest from the beginning - he looks cool and his character seems to have depth. The thing that draws the eye is his piercings and way of dressing. It was interesting to see the relationship between him and Hori progress. But somewhere in the middle it just lost its touch.
It started with Miyamura appearance - seems like his look in the first chapter was just for shows. Because it kept getting normalized to the point that in the chapters to come the only things that were left of his initial look were dots in his ears. Something happened to his personality too because he started to give a very bland vibe.
It continued with their relationship that became boring, and ended with the series starting to tell about the relationship of all the side characters.
It completely lost its spark is chapters 5-6. Also, the animation wasn't that good.
Overall, it was entertaining in the beginning and sparked a lot of emotions and memories. So I can't rate it too low.
Dr. Death (2021)
Reading the story on Wikipedia was far more interesting
Not only was reading it on Wikipedia was more interesting, but it was also clearer how the events unfolded. The chronological order of his "mistakes" was not always clear, many (important) things were simply made up and also many boring scenes.
They could have made a great crime drama from this sad story. But as of now I would be much more interested to watch a documentary about the story than watch this series.
Kami no Tou (2020)
I also love the webtoon, but the rating it too high for this piece
If we judge the Anime as a series by itself, without leaning on our love to the Webtoon, it clearly doesn't deserve the many 10 stars reviews it was getting.
I'm very glad that other artists beside mangakas are getting recognition, but it's important to stay truthful.
The comics has a complex plot, but the execution is also very important when converting it into an Anime.
The animation of the anime was horrible in the first episode. This, by itself, is enough to discourage many people from continuing to watch. The claim of some people that it's original to the comics is ridiculous, since it's a fault the artist made due to low drawing skills, not something that was done intentionally. Completely okay when it's an online comics, completely not forgiven when it's an anime. The animation improved slightly later but it's still not good, especially the drawings of the eyes. But I suppose it's the best the studio could do with a low budget.
The story itself was rushed in the speed of light compared to the comics. Now I might agree that some things might feel like they were dragged too much in the comics, but they certainly over did it when converting to an Anime. And of course when this happens things get lost in the middle.
The relationship between the characters felt very rushed. Instead of the viewer getting to know the characters over time and the characters getting to know each other and building a friendship everything just happened over two-three episodes. I understand that they were probably on major budget restrictions but doing so took so much of the story's depth and soul.
Also fight scenes were simply cut down. It was presented as if a fight was over with one swing, which made the characters look over powered.
In the comics Rak had from time to time comical scenes, but here they seem to make his whole character comical. One of the things that make him funny in the comics is that most of the time he behaved very seriously, but here most of the time he behaved goofy.
In the end, it has a lot of potential since the plot the Anime is based on is very good, I can only hope that if the series gets more popular, their budget will grow and they'll be able to put more into improving the faults.
Koe no katachi (2016)
Boring and not very realistic
There were a few things that I didn't like in this movie.
I would expect a drama to be more realistic than any other genre but it's not really the case here. Unfortunately, in the reality we live in most people wouldn't care if they bullied someone. But in this movie not only everyone who participated cared but also everyone around.
The plot was all over the place, the point of the movie wasn't made clear. The motives of the characters weren't clear. The main character wanted to kill himself, the reasons to this weren't really explored. The audience was left guessing. The deaf girl wanted to kill herself too. Okay... why? They said something about hating herself, but why? The actions and motives of other characters also weren't clear.
The relationships - unclear. Shoko tried to tell Shoyo that she liked him, but he didn't understand her and that the last we heard of the issue.
Shoyo went to meet a girl he knew in middle school, she avoided him, then went to seek him but he didn't care to talk to her. So why did he try to contact her?
There were a few minutes about Shoko's hearing aid - she was distressed after a visit to the doctor and later stopped wearing it in one ear. That was never explained. A shame since it was one of a very few moments that looked interesting in this movie.
It was also very difficult to understand were the plot was trying to go. Was it trying to focus on the relationship between the two main character? If so, it was done poorly. Was it trying to focus on the inner journey Shoyo went through? If so, that was also done poorly, since his inner world was never shown or explained properly.
The characters were unrelatable at all. Most of the side characters were a caricature of their bad traits. The two main characters were pretty boring.
At the end apparently Shoko felt bad about something. Was it about leaving the class back in middle school? It's so ridiculous that I think (hope) I understood it wrong. But if not, it means that they left one of the main issues in the movie unclear. I'm yet again left guessing.
Really could have gone without this one.
Kimi no na wa. (2016)
Give it a try even if it sounds like not your style
Oh man did I like this movie! It has everything I look for in a movie: an interesting plot, deep relatable characters, and an atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression for a long time.
I heard about this movie a long time ago but the summery didn't sound interesting enough for me. I'm not a big fan of romance nor drama. I decided to eventually give it a try due to the quarantine, and it exceeded my expectations greatly.
My only issue with the movie is that it starts slow and gives the impression of a simple romantic drama. I didn't mind much since it drew me more into the story and the character's life, but my husband was extremely bored, so I suppose it's not for everyone.
But the plot twist in the middle! Wow! I didn't see it coming. I was at the end of my chair until the movie ended. I especially noticed that they kept the characters reactions not over the top like it's done in so many Animes, it gave a more realistic feeling and felt more like watching a movie and not a cartoon.
Also, the animation is amazing.
This is a masterpiece. It's not often that I watch a movie and then still keep thinking about it a few hours later. Too bad you can't see this kind of depth in Hollywood movies that have a much bigger budget.
Bill Burr: You People Are All the Same (2012)
Great comedy for the common redneck
His jokes by themselves were okay. Nothing hilarious but did get a small laugh from me from time to time. By itself I would give it 7 out of 10. But the stupid things he said just made it unpleasant to watch some portion of the time. His whole demeanor gave a vibe of a very unbalanced person, full of unresolved issues.
There was also this disgusting part where he started to humiliate a woman in the audience and call her names. A woman who paid money to go watch his show. Like a bully. He's maybe not a women beater, but take this behaviors and add it to the long monolog of his about why no one asks what a woman did to make a man beat her you can see that he's not very far from it.
Marc Maron: End Times Fun (2020)
Wasn't funny
It's supposed to be a stand up show so I'll judge it only as that - it simply was not funny. Through the whole hour he managed to crack a smile from me only once.
I personally have nothing against Marc, he seems like a smart man and I did like some of the things he said but I was simply not amused. Sorry.
The Witcher (2019)
An entertaining series but has flaws
I'll start by saying that this series is an entertaining fantasy story. I'm no new to Witcher; I played the first game, and though didn't read the books heard enough of the lore and the other games to get an idea of how this world is build.
There were some really nice surprises in this series: Like Henry's great acting (I really didn't expect him to be that good and that similar to Geralt), the atmosphere that was just like in the game, some fan service that only the hard fans could spot.
But unfortunately there were a few very notable minuses that I simply couldn't ignore the whole time I was watching: The two main actresses who played Triss and Yennefer. OMG! What were they thinking?! Ok, I'll start off by saying that I wouldn't mind if they made Triss black or any other ethnicity. I really wouldn't mind if they didn't make her like in the books, or the video game. Sure it would take some time to get used to, but in the long run I won't be bothered by it. What I do mind is that the Triss who is supposed to be beautiful was played by an ugly actress! (Sorry Anna) Every time I saw her on screen I cringed. I don't understand it, is there not enough actresses who can act but also are pretty?
The same goes for Yennefer. Yennefer the beauty. Yennefer who altered her looks with magic to look as beautiful as possible. Yennefer who through the series was talked about by other character as being stunning.... Was played by someone whose looks is mediocre at best. Seriously, I think even I look better and that's saying a lot. It caused a ridiculous inconsistency with what the script writers were trying to do when other characters talked about how pretty Yennefer is with what was actually shown to the viewers.
Another thing that bothered me in the time jumps - they made a bit of a mess with that since it was very difficult to follow.
And in those time jumps you get the third thing that bothered me - the characters didn't seem to age. Yes, I know that sorceress don't age, I'm talking about all the other characters. It just felt like lazy filming to me. If they didn't want to use CGI for some reason the least they could have used is make up or hair color.
The fourth thing - all this talk about destiny. Yes we get it, destiny. No need to repeat it 10 times every chapter. They so over used this world, and everything it signifies, that by the end of watching it just sounded unbearably cliché and even out of place. I was disappointed with how Geralt and Ciri met. They could have made it much more complex but chose to just put them in the same house and say "Destiny!". C'mon, seriously?
Almost all of those mistakes could have been corrected easily. It felt to me like they didn't want put this little bit of extra energy and thinking to make things look realistic and believable.
So on one hand I was very disappointed by all of this and this feeling of disappointment followed me throughout the whole series, but on the other hand the story was very interesting. It had suspense, drama, humor, slight character development and a lot of mystery. There were some very captivating characters with depth in them.
I also really enjoyed listening to Geralt talk. Not only because of Henrys' great performance but also his lines were so spot on, so in character of Geralt from the video game.
I think this is why I find it so strange that this series had so much thought put into it from very talented people but some other big parts were as if disregarded at all.
Joker (2019)
I would not call it a masterpiece as some did
There is no doubt that the movie was well thought of - from the plot to execution. I must praise Phoenix's superb acting. He managed to portray very believably the awkward social reject and also the crazy murderer that he became. I really think it's a role only few could do. It was also very interesting to watch how he deteriorated mentally and little by little gave up on trying to fit into society. Gotta hand it to the script writer - the plot was unpredictable.
But...
There wasn't anything too complex about Arthur's mental state. No deep psychological analysis, or a web of many deep factors that created a one of a kind psychotic maniac. Could it be that I was expecting too much? Very possible since I came with very high expectations after reading some reviews.
What doesn't have anything with expectations is that at the end he didn't remind much of the original Joker. He felt more like a simply society reject that went completely crazy and started killing people. Not that much different from many other serial killers or mass murderers. He didn't have the master mind that so much designated the Joker and made him different from a simple murderer.
Another thing is that there were long parts of the movie that felt very dull.
Also I found it hard to buy the reason behind the riots in the city and the role the Joker played in them. Even if taken into account that the poverty and anger was cooking for a long time in that society, it still feels somewhat absurd that killing three people in the subway made the joker so notorious.
In conclusion, I can identify with the character which gave me a lasting impression of the movie, and this movie could have been very great if it was a movie about how a person that's rejected by society turns slowly into a serial killer. But as a movie about the Joker I felt it was lacking. Lacking the things that made the Joker actually the Joker, and not just another crazy murderer.
Unidentified: Inside America's UFO Investigation (2019)
Underrated from an unknown reason
Those people deserve a medal for the sacrifice of their careers and the professional investigation they conducted in order to bring the public the truth.
I heard about this show only after the US government approved that the videos presented in this show are legitimate. And yet, it's incomprehensible to me how some viewers could simply disregard everything that was presented in front of them. Are you so afraid of the truth? Or are you simply incapable of a little flexibility in your view of the world? Even if the videos weren't confirmed to be true, even if there weren't any videos the events presented in this show are extremely credible. You have multiple people telling the same thing, you have their names and faces, you have politician and people of power being interviewed on the subject. A simple google search will show you that those people are real. Even if you're not a trusting person you might assume that a few of them were lying (though I don't think so), you might assume that some didn't remember correctly, or that they're exaggerating, or that maybe there was a malfunction in some of the machines (like radars) but it's impossible for a logical person to dismiss every single one of the eye witness accounts under those reasons. If you're doing this you WANT to stay asleep. Then this show is not for you and you shouldn't have watched it to begin with.
Another thing that baffles me is the complain of some viewers about the video quality and the absurd notion that it makes the whole thing less credible. What did you expect? Did you think a pilot will take out his smart phone in the middle of the flight and start taking pictures? Those videos are of an infra-red video camera that's built in those air crafts. It has a function - and that function is to detect other air crafts to help the pilot. It doesn't need to have high resolution, sharp image, color or any other thing you might think it should have because your phone has it. It does have other functions that your phone doesn't have and never will have.
In short, the people who brought us this series deserve much more recognition and this show needs to be watched by as many people as possible. When it comes to documentaries it doesn't get any more professional than this.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
A great fantasy story
To be honest - I was skeptical at first. I heard this series was made with puppets and was afraid I would waste my time on a kiddies show. But it was made spectacular!
The puppets themselves are very expressional. I don't think you could ask for more when it comes to conveying emotions. A few close up shots left me amazed with the skin texture. I don't know if they used CGI or they build them that way, but one thing for sure: a lot of thought, energy and money was put inside this project to make it look as realistic as possible. Every detail was thought of.
The plot itself is very unique, beautiful execution. A fantasy story which I didn't see the likes for a long time. Every character has depth, its own personality and story. Their interactions are sometimes sweet, sometimes sour but always very human like. This story shows a lot of complex emotions and decision making, in a level that is no less than an art.
I didn't watch the movie this series was based on, so I cannot comment on this aspect, all I can say that in itself it is one great series. I want season two!
Dororo (2019)
A captivating story that could have been better
This anime isn't perfect, but it was entertaining enough for me to keep watching it and to be curios enough to see how it ends. It definitely has good parts but also a few bad once.
The good once: The characters are deep and interesting. The human stories that are presented felt real, and so are the interactions between the characters. There is a strong feeling of wanting to know what will happen to the characters, how they will evolve, will they reach their goals. Also the relationship between Hyakkimaru and Dororo was very sweet.
The bad once: The fundamental of this whole series is illogical. This series is trying to sell that a person who has prosthetic arms and legs made out of wood will be able to walk, run, and jump like a completely normal person. It's trying to sell that a person without a spine can move normally, and have a prosthetic spine put instead of the real one. That a person with prosthetic arms can use the prosthetic fingers. Now, if it was somehow explained, like in "Full metal alchemist", it would have been completely okay. But it was not, and it seemed like it was simply expected from the viewer to accept that this is how reality works. It was completely stupid and didn't stop bothering me the whole time I watched the series.
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
Mostly for kids
I re-watched the first movie two days before going to watch this one and can say for certain that the second movie is not on the same level as the first one. Everyone I went with agreed and some even got mad that they managed to ruin such a movie.
It wasn't all bad: the movie did have some deep massage about friendship and insecurities. But the plot wasn't that interesting, they made Ralph much dumber than in the first movie. It also seemed like they took out much of the character depths both Ralph and Vanellope had.
The first movie was for kids and adults alike, this one is mostly for kiddies.
Maniac (2018)
Confusing
The story takes place in a world that's a mixture of new technology with old one. It has robots everywhere but old screens and computers that remind more the computers from 30 years ago. It has a strange society where it's legal to pay to a company to get classified information, threaten and kidnap someone.
This title is hard to review. On one hand it has many illogical things and behaviors, like a dubious services provided to citizens, people's reaction when someone threatens them, and the workers behavior in the lab where the experiments where held was utterly ridiculous (and I still didn't understand why they were all Japanese). There were parts in some episodes that made me skip a few minutes because it felt like they dragged for too long, like the episodes where they imagined a different life. Although I also must complement Emma Stone's great acting, she really seemed like a completely different person.
So though a lot of parts made it feel like I'm watching a series that someone made without thinking thoroughly, other parts were very emotional, deep and meaningful. They somehow managed connect a lot of dots to eventually portray a complicated picture of the human mind. Everyone had their emotional struggle, even the main computer. It was fascinating to see how the reasons to their behavior were unraveled one by one.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Don't watch it with high expectations
Don't let the high rating fool you; it's not the next Avatar, and not even The troll hunter. It's a nice fantasy cartoon with a nice plot, but in many ways childish and stupid. There was something in the drawings that bothered me, but what bothered me the most is the childish dialogs. They are trying to be funny and sarcastic but in most cases it simply doesn't pit the situation and the general feeling left is that the writer didn't know what he was doing. Like they're trying too hard and it comes out awkward.
The Son of Bigfoot (2017)
Not one of those movies adults can enjoy just as much as kids
So bigfoot (a hairy man) with superpowers (has speed and hearing that suits more to superman) is also a magician (can heal by touch) and Snow white (can talk to animals) is chased by a corporation in a world where law enforcement doesn't seems to exist.
The bad guys eventually get on his trail and the mature thing he does is to blame his 12 year old son for leading them to him. But eventually everything works out in a predictable kind of way.
It's a nice film for kids, for me it felt kind of dumb.
Although the animation is pretty and the kid is lovable.
Violet Evergarden (2018)
Nice Anime to pass the time
Don't let the words "the weapon" in the summary fool you. This is not a story about some weapon or about a war and filled with action. Rather it's a story about the aftermath of war and about the human emotion.
Violet goes out to learn about emotions by writing letters for people, her goal is to understand the words "I love you". The pace in this series is slow and leveled, it won't hold you at the edge of your seat with suspense, but the curiosity about Violet's journey will make you want to keep watching.
The series managed to portray very well the feeling of loss, and made the characters feel alive. Although it had some down sides as well: Like the whole profession that was called "Auto Memories Dolls" , this title made no sense to me but maybe it's just bad translation. The fact that Violet's past and abilities were never explained, though I guess it could be argued that the series on purpose tried not to touch this subject. And I think what bothered me the most is the smooth transaction from emotionless puppet who killed people without bashing an eye to someone who could be considered a normal person after a relative short time.
It could be a nice series to pass the time, but also can be dull in moments.
The Shape of Water (2017)
I really liked this movie
A movie first of all is supposed to be telling a human story and this movie does so wonderfully. They somehow managed to show character's depth and development in one movie equal to what can only been seen in books. I really don't understand the negative comments.
The characters were so believable and complex that the story didn't get out of my head even a few days after watching it.
Kiseijû: Sei no kakuritsu (2014)
I enjoyed every minute watching this series
I started watching this series hoping for something half decent, but got so much more.
I first noticed how elaborate the dialogues are and how much they manage to convey emotions. It makes the viewer to empathize and understand the main character.
Then I noticed how the plot itself is complex and full of twists and unexpected surprises. It was all so unexpected, yet so realistic.
Eventually this series apparently has a philosophical meaning hidden within it which was revealed only towards the end; who really is the parasite? The monster? Personally I really liked seeing the debate on this matter. Who knows, maybe it'll make more people aware of what they're (we are) doing to earth and other living beings.
The series has drama, thriller, action, mystery great plot and realistic characters. It explores deeply the human soul when showing decisions made out of fear, love, loss, friendship and many more emotions.
Sword Art Online (2012)
An example of what happens when you grad a series unnecessarily
I think it's impossible to review this series without referring to the first and second season separately.
The first season shows the hard emotional side of being stuck in a game where you play for your life. The hardships were portrayed very realistically in my opinion. It made it even more realistic for an online gamer like myself who knows the interactions you usually have with other players. Although I could never relate or find any interest in Azuna I did find it interesting to see how the players who were captive in the game tried to build their life and form a relationship despite everything.
There were a few things I hoped will be explained at the end: The motive of the man who trapped them there, how come no one managed to set them free of there for years, why did it seems that the authorities didn't get their hands on this man?
I hoped for plausible answers but in the end on the first season, when they finally set free of this game, I got none. That man apparently did this because he always dreamed of a world like that. Seriously? You kill and trap thousands because of a stupid reason like this while ruining your own life too? One might argue that the man is insane but that explanation gets accepted by Kirito and Azuna like the most understandable thing ever.
In the real world it's announced that the culprit has escaped the police. The man caused an equivalent to a massive terror attack and the police understood that he's behind it only after all the players woke up and then he simply slips between their fingers??
From that point on things started to become even less logical as the Mangaka who came up with this story obviously was trying desperately to drag it as much as he could.
So apparently Azuna got purposefully trapped again in another game by the "bad guy" of this season who works with her dad. His plan was to marry her while she's still in a coma with the permission of her father. Logically her dad agreed. And of course this is completely legal. Now we can assume that the Japan in "Sword art online" isn't democratic and trades women like some other countries in the world, but throughout the series there is no indication to this.
What follows is Azuna the damsel in distress, a bunch of people who take a game way too seriously (without any reason as no one can die anymore in reality), Kirito somehow keeping all his powers from the previous game, and many more nonsense. I stopped watching towards the end of season two.
