This Is England '88 (2011)
One of the most depressing things i've ever watched (In a good way)
Most things set at christmas are joyful, happy and festive experiences that fill you with festive joy. This is England 88 takes a complete 180 and is honestly one of the most depressing stories i've ever seen. Following the events of This is england 86, Lol is now a mum with milky's kid and is struggling mentally. Her child wont sleep and she is constantly being haunted by her dad who she killed in the prier mini series. Woody has moved on from the group and ow has a new girlfriend called jennifer. Although his life seems to be fine, he deeply misses his friends and lol, even though she cheated on him and gave birth to milkys baby. Shaun and Smell are drifting apart and shaun is having it off with a girl called fay behind smells back. The mini series does an excellent job of making you feel legitimately sorry for the characters, especially with Lol, who, as the episodes go on, slips further and further away into depression as loneliness, guilt and the trauma involving her dad destroys her. Its honestly one of my favorite things to watch during christmas because it brings home the message that christmas, for most people is a fun time, but for others it is a truly depressing time. Not all people have the luxury of being with family and thats why i watch it, to remind me that christmas isn't always fun for people. A moment that sticks out for me is in the first episode, Lol is getting ready for bed and goes to brush her teeth, she opens a mirror to get the tooth paste, she closes it to find her dad staring at her, she tells herself it isn't real, before walking past him and turning the lights off whilst a haunting quire sings in the background. This scene legitimately terrified me and made me have a whole new appreciation for this series.
It (2017)
It (2017)- The goonies meets nightmare on elm street
When "IT" was announced early this year, i was sceptical. Mostly because of the look of pennywise, it looked a bit too off. Even though Tim Curry's outfit was a bit goofy, the performance of Curry helped the goofy outfit become creepy. 2017s Pennywise looked like something edgy prick would make on tumblr. Even when stephen king commented on the movie saying "people have nothing to be afraid of" (meaning the movie isn't bad) it made me nervous because the man has praised such films as death race 2000 and 2012. However, after watching the film today, i was rather impressed. Plot- In the small town of Derry, Maine, children go messing 6 times the normal average, mainly because of a killer clown called pennywise that goes around kidnapping children and eating them. So in the summer of 1989, 7 kids face their fears and try to stop the clown before any more kids get taken. What i liked For one thing, this is an incredibly tense, creepy and downright disturbing film. The film is clear from the intro that is means business. For example, in the 1990s mini series, when georgie is killed, it simply fades to a funeral scene, however in the 2017 version, poor georgies arm gets eaten off by pennywise, he then riggles around in pain before being dragged into the sewer to be eaten. Did i mention that this kid is only 7. After that scene, i knew this was gonna be a really good horror movie. I also love the way in which the characters emotions help develop their personalities. For example, Billie, who was the older brother of georgie, is, throughout the film, constantly under the belief his brother isn't dead. The way the character is holding on to a small sliver of hope that he is still alive really makes you empathise with the character. There is one scene near the end which almost had me in tears because of how touching it was. I also loved the chemistry between the losers club. Usually when a group of kids are the main protagonists in horror movies or even movies in general, they are usually written by a group of 50 year olds who guess what kids talk and acted like. However, this movie nails what kids that age talk about. From mum jokes to swearing to childish banter to the ways in which they spend their free time, it does not feel forced. The dialogue didn't seem out of place. Another aspect i liked were the child actors. Usually child actors are garbage but i really liked the child actors. The last thing i have to talk about is Pennywise. Good god what an amazing performance. Pennywise is played by Swedish actor Bill skarsgård, and boy does he knock it out of the ball park. When the previous character of pennywise was played so perfectly by Tim Curry you have some serious shoes to fill . But Skarsgård nails this role. I haven't seen such an unsettling, eerie, creepy and downright scary villain in a movie since Heath ledger did the Joker in the Dark knight. Every time pennywise is on screen you just want him to go away because of how scary he is. Things i don't like. However, the film isn't perfect. For example, even though i loved the child actors, one of the child actors felt a bit bland and not interesting. I kind of got annoyed by the character, all he ever did (at least to my experience) was stand around, cry or moan. Another thing i didn't like, and this stems back to the original book ,is the decision georgie makes when he reaches down the sewer to get the paper boat back. Picture this, if you were a 7 year old and all of a sudden a clown appeared in the sewer right in front of you, my guess is you wouldn't want to spend much time with him. So i don't understand why georgie went to get the paper boat off of him. My final criticism is that there is a weird thing between the chubby kid and the girl. Throughout the movie, the chubby kid has a crush on this girl, but she ends up kissing Billie instead, even when the chubby kid saves the girl from being paralyzed, they just re enact a poem the both like. I thought this relationship was a bit unnecessary. Overall if you want a genuinely scary, genuinely unnerving film that will make you scared of clowns IT is the film for you
The World's End (2013)
Did Not Like It
what does the cornetto trilogy and the godfather trilogy have in common? They both have a black sheep film, that being the godfather part 3 and The worlds End. Here are a list of things i didn't like about the worlds end -forgettable characters -the premise was unoriginal (that being that the human race never had the capability yo make technology) -Character reversals (that being Simon pegg was the goofball and Nick Frost was the straight man) -Generic Steve Jobs style villain -Not funny -main protagonists didn't feel like friends or even school yard friends, more like people who once talked to each other and had a massive argument at the end of the visit. -Ending Spoiler warning After confronting the alien masters and finishing the Golden mile, The aliens leave. whilst leaving, the aliens create an electromagnetic pulse to wipe out all of mans technology. The aftermath of the explosion shows that a complete disaster followed and that the five protagonists went there separate ways. This ending was very bleak and disappointing. In the first two Cornetto Trilogy films, the ending was a well earned happy ending because the protagonists had been through so much, that it was only natural for them to have a nice ending. Here, the ending was unnecessarily bleak. Overall, much like the godfather trilogy, i would just stick to the first two. I would also like to say that Paul is the unofficial Sequel to the cornetto trilogy, despite not being written or directed by Edgar Wright or having a cornetto ice cream in the film, Paul was funnier, had memorable characters and had a happier ending.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (2013)
I don't get it
I had to watch this movie whilst babysitting my little cousin and i have to say that without a doubt this is one of, if not the WORST film i have ever seen. The entire premise of the movie is like reading one of those creepy generic fan fictions where stock A animal goes to the human world. STORY From what i gathered, Mary sue stereotype "Twilight Sparkle" is sent to the human world to retrieve a crown or something and has to cope with an American high school. Along the way she makes friends and at the end of the film she fights a devil or something. I kind of blanked out half way through the movie as i got bored MAIN CRITICISM One main criticism i had with the film was the way the characters were drawn. If you look at the characters in the movies they are all drawn really really weirdly. It was like the entire movie was drawn by a horny member of the fan base and they wanted to see what they could get away with. It might just be me with that problem so i wont let that one be the deal breaker for me. However the rest of the film made me feel bored. Since i am a 16 going on 17 years old , i knew going in i wasn't going to like it, but i didn't know it was going to be this bad... SPOILERS At one point in the movie, "Twilight" (that is the only name i know apart from rainbow dash) has to be voted prom queen or something so she can get the crown (why she didn't just steal it from the school office or beat the living daylights out of the antagonist whilst she was in human form and take the crown like any normal person would do, i don't know) so in order to win over the mind of her classmates, her and her friends sing a song in the canteen (or cafeteria) essentially saying "vote for twilight". That single scene killed any enjoyment i had for the film. If that happened at my school, all the kids would shout "SHUT THE **** UP" and at the end of school day all the girls would go round the back of the school and batter them. One other problem i had with the film was the ending. Actually i have to say a positive as i was rather impressed at the style in which they drew the big devil, i thought it was cool. But it does not depart from the fact the climax of the film was utterly dull and boring. MORE SPOILERS So when Twilight gets crowned prom queen, the little Spyro ripoff gets nicked by two teens, they take him outside and the flaming haired girl threatens to destroy the portal to the pony world if she doesn't get the crown. Twilight (from now on i just gonna say Tara ) refuses and there is a big sort of skirmish. Finally fire head gets hold of the crown and turns into a devil. However with the magical power of friendship, Tara and her friends grow cat ears and hair extensions (some of them have wings) and defeats the devil in a span of seven and a half minutes, with no fight or battle, just a magical rainbow blast and that's it (one nitpick i had with scene is that if a great big rainbow blast thing occurring in a suburban area, you'd think the authorities would get involved).By the end of the film Tara goes home, fiery haired girl learns her lesson and they live happily ever after. CONCLUSION This really is a film for small children, and i honestly do not see why this and the TV show its based off of is regarded with such praise. Its dull, predictable and bland. If this were my film, a portal to Wolfenstein would open up and Tata and her mates would team up with BJ Blaskovich and battle mecca robots.
