My Fake Boyfriend (2022)
Fun but very surface level
This movie has an entertaining storyline with characters who are a lot of fun to watch. Where it falls short for me is the lack of depth. We know that the two best friends, Andrew and Jake, are insecure and lacking confidence, but we never really learn why that is. And at the end when everything comes to a head, there's not really any self-reflection. The consequences come as a result hurting the people they cared about, but not really for lying to a ton of people. So for me, it was just missing that extra layer to have me invested in the characters. I feel like I didn't know much about them other than what was happening in their lives in that moment. Overall, the movie was entertaining enough, but it made no sort of impact on any level, at all.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018)
You know what Veronica never got? An apology.
This movie was pretty mediocre to me. Let's start with the positives: the acting was good, and the movie overall was good enough to keep my attention.
Now let's talk about the story.
At first, I was rooting for Sierra. The "close your eyes" kiss thing was pretty creepy, not gonna lie. Let's be real: If genders were switched there's no way Netflix would have gotten away with trying to pass that off as cute. But things took a turn for the worse when Jamey kisses Veronica. Instead of confronting Veronica about the situation, and without acknowledging that she put Veronica in that situation to begin with by coercing her into dating Jamey, Sierra goes straight to HACKING VERONICA'S INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT and broadcasting the fact that she was dumped by the guy she was dating over DM, something Veronica told Sierra in confidence. After falling out with pretty much everyone, everything falls back into place as those she fell out with are quick to forgive everything she did (including Veronica) without Sierra even having to take accountability. Hence, Sierra shows pretty much zero character growth and still gets her happy ending.
Sierra Burgess is more than just a loser. She's desperate, self-pitying, vindictive, immature, and petty. If I was Veronica, I would not want a friend like that.
Keep the Lights On (2012)
Lacking depth
My biggest beef with this movie was that the romance between the two main characters, Erik and Paul, seemed shallow. They only meet each other a couple times before we as an audience are supposed to believe that they are "in love." Even Erik can't seem to really put into words why he's so into Paul when directly questioned. That, and that alone, made it difficult for me to be emotionally invested in the relationship between Erik and Paul, and therefore I didn't really care about any of the subsequent ups and downs that they went through. What the script lacks is the development of the relationship, and without it I am left confused as to why Erik chooses to stay with Paul throughout the story.
Otherwise, the acting was believable and the plot was interesting. I just like to feel emotionally connected to the love story in any romance movie, and I didn't feel it here.
