Barra el-Manhag (2021)
A tribute to the 80s kids in rural Egypt
This is a touching movie. I haven't been a fan of Amr Salama before, but he outdone himself in this one. Nice visuals and silky smooth storytelling. The film captured the 80s in rural Egypt very well, a subculture rarely discussed. Sometimes kids around Nour (the main character) look like NPCs and this could've been easily avoided. However it is still stunning work. We need more films like this one.
Kalb Baladi (2016)
One star
A tiny amount of good jokes, probably Naguib's writing. But overall, it is a comically-challenged movie with a bad plot and no character development. Strange choice and use of actors too, a lot of big names with slowpoke underwhelming jokes, unfortunate use of Bayoumi Fouad.
The Lighthouse (2019)
I hope seagulls eat the Egger brothers alive
I hope seagulls eat the Egger brothers alive. Terrible movie, what a shame to waste Willem Dafoe's great acting skills on such a stinky movie.
I refuse to write more about this to reach the minimum required words for this to qualify as an admissible review, the film just isn't worth it.
Men Agl Zikoo (2022)
Boring Cash-grab schlock lacking any interest.
Egyptian cinema will continue spiraling into the abyss as long as Peter Mimi and Tamer morsy have monopoly on the cinema and show business. This is sad. Real sad.
The Choice (2020)
Worst Acting & Directing I've ever seen
Actors are unable to deliver any line as human beings. It's like they're aliens trying to mimic human behaviour.
Of course it isn't entirely thier fault, Director Peter Mimi has his fingerprints all over the show, he's utterly incapable of writing charachters and directing actors.
The script is sub mediocre, editing is too rough, trying to be cinematic and fails horribly.
Enjoyed it a lot, as a comedy.
Bedoon Zikr Asma (2013)
Delicately crafted show. Will remember it for a long time
From the very first minutes of the show, you could sense the good craftsmanship behind it. Every aspect holds up pretty well till the finale. Main characters have so many layers and genuine motives that goes deeper than any show, at least in this decade. Great writing, decor, directing, acting. Props for the whole crew and cast.
With that said, I would've loved to see more depth to charachters like Me'timid, sheikh Shafiee' and Nagwa Kamal. These in particular are created as comically evil villains with no obvious grounds to thier behavior. Also, the script gets a little icky around romantic scenes, like the ones between Taghreed and Ahmed. A romantic scene is supposed to make the audience feel this heartwarming pleasurable sensation that the couple are feeling. Instead, Taghreed and Ahmed are a misfortunate case of distasteful romantic talk. Their love is not showing anywhere, they hide more than they open up to each other, never showing thier true selves to each other. And if they try to, they make it even worse.
Overall, this is a really good show, the creators made a lovely drama that Egyptian market doesn't see often. Good job
