Cat Show (2014)
Happiness
Unusual documentary, it doesn't reveal much about the world of cat shows. What makes it interesting is that Carly, is blind and shows Persian cats professionally. She can't drive so her friends and others drive her and her two cats to and from the shows and help her while there. There isn't any excitement or drama and I think that's why I enjoyed it.
Who would expect a blind woman to be showing cats? Cats are judged primarily on their looks and she can't see them, Carly has no way of knowing what they look like, but she can feel them and know their personalities, and love them. Her cat Tango was featured prominently in the movie and he did well at the many shows he appeared in, he didn't win first place, often he was 3rd or 7th, but she was happy that he did well enough to eventually earn enough points to go to a major show (where he did well). That is why I liked this movie, despite the difficulties she must have faced, she overcame them and did something that made her happy. It was obvious she loved her cats and that made me feel good. I finished watching this with a smile on my face.
Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015)
Disappointing, warning: some character and plot spoilers
Like many Tremors fans, I was very excited when I found out about this film. Tremors 5: Bloodlines is better than Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (which was horrible), but worse than the first three Tremors movies (Tremors, Aftershocks, and Back to Perfection).
I so wanted to like this film, but sadly there are few things I liked about it and a lot of things I disliked. The warmth and humor that made the first three films so enjoyable and fun to watch is missing in this installment of the series. Other than Burt (played by Michael Gross) and one old guy, I didn't care for any of the characters (& that includes his son played by Jamie Kennedy), they all lacked personality. Much of the humor is not funny; the repeated urination scenes and constant jabs at Burt's age. There is a scene I especially disliked where Burt goes temporarily insane/crazy while trapped in a lion cage, the scene was not funny, it was not in keeping with Burt's character, and it went on way too long. The whole setup for the film didn't work (I won't spoil it, but it would have been better if the only villains in the film had been the creatures). Moving the film location to Africa didn't do anything to make the film better, the Australian outback would have been better. As a whole, I didn't find the monsters enjoyable or interesting. The CGI used for the Graboids was not good, the old-style Graboids were visually better and what's more they actually had personalities (especially in the first film). Most of the film's monster action involved the A-blasters which I've never liked.
There were only a few things I liked about the film. As always, I liked Burt, he is fun to watch, and it's nice that Burt has a son who wants to follow in his footsteps and work with him (even if I didn't find the son appealing or likable). Although the monsters were uninteresting due to lack of personality, bad CGI, and the emphasis on the A-blasters, the idea of latest evolution of the Graboid as smaller and faster is good.
Could there be another installment in this film franchise? Maybe, but honestly I think the franchise has run its course.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Not surprising that NBC didn't show it
Only because so many critics and boards gave high marks to this show did I watch it. What a waste of time, it's no surprise NBC choose not to air it, it is very doubtful it would have made it past a few episodes.
On the plus side, the show has a catchy opening song, some good actors (always fun seeing Carol Kane), it's upbeat and focuses on being upbeat, and it has a unique premise.
On the negative side, and the negatives far, far outweigh the positives. The base storyline touches on a very unpleasant subject (kidnapping, cults, belittling women, etc.) the characters for the most part are unflattering stereotypes, and not once did I laugh or smile while watching any of the episodes.
All the time I watched it I couldn't help but think this this show would be a better fit on a cable channel such as TV Land, but I think that channel too would, for good reason, have passed on it.
