The First Purge (2018)
Terrible movie
There are 2 main criteria in which I base whether or not I like a movie. First is if I have to check the time. If I do, I have lost interest and the movie is too long for me. (It could be an hour and a half movie or 3 hours). The second criteria is that I have to identify with a character and root for them in some way. There has to be a likability factor. This movie didn't satisfy either of those criteria. I was checking the time about 35 mins into it because the first half moved entirely too slow. Nothing happened. The only character I actually really liked was the neighbor with asthma, but she was only in the movie for like 15 mins. The sister was ok, and I did root for her, but I wasn't 100% on board. And the drug dealer turned hero...that's a hard no for me.
When I saw the original Purge movie, I always wanted to know how the purge got started...but this movie was not the answer I was looking for. I feel like most movies, it had great potential, but unlikable characters, no real plot, and a poor script prevented this movie from being anything but decent.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Waste of Time
SPOILER ALERT!!!
I was eagerly waiting for season 3 of this series to come out because I was interested in how things would play out, given how season 2 ended. What I watched was such a let down and disappointment, that a part of me wanted to give up, but I was committed to see it through.
First, I couldn't stand Ani. Like who was she? She shows up the end of their junior year and is magically close enough friends with everyone to tell her private and intimate things. In the end I had hoped she did it so she'd be sent off to jail. Actually, in the last episode I thought she was an undercover cop, trying to gain their trust and then secretly working with the sheriff's office. That would have made more sense with all her snooping around. But instead, she was just a nosey annoyance who, it seems, got on other viewers' nerves as well. (Glad I wasn't alone)
Second, they didn't give enough attention to the Tyler storyline about the possible school shooting from the end of season 2. I'm glad he finally got justice for it, but I feel like it became a small subplot in the Ani Show (I hate her character). The premise of "Who killed Bryce Walker?" could have been done so much better and was an intriguing plot line, but was a major epic fail.
I have to say I appreciated the scenes that showed Bryce trying to atone for his crimes and wanting to be a better person. In particular, the scenes with his mom were very powerful. I know he did horrible things and I'm not excusing that. But he is (was) a human being and didn't deserve to die. Jail yes, but not death.
Third, I wanted them to go into Monty's backstory more and as horrible as Monty was and the horrible things he did, when I watched the scene when the deputy said he was killed in jail, I gasped. Monty, with all his faults, was a troubled young man who did not deserve to die (Neither did Bryce). He and Bryce deserved to pay for what they did (prison) but not death. I actually hoped that him sorta coming to terms with him being gay would be a tipping point for him. It was one of the only times I saw him happy and smiling.
And last, the whole ending, where they FRAME MONTY for killing Bryce. So they just get away with murder. I feel like it's such a deviation from the show's original message of taking responsibility for your actions and pretty much people got away with murder.
While I'd like to see what could happen with the kid who said he was with Monty and whether he can clear his name, and the guy who picked up the bag of guns, I don't want another season of this trash.
I apologize if this sounds childish and non-sensical but I just finished the show and I wanted to express my thoughts/feelings while they were still fresh in my mind.
A.P. Bio (2018)
I Don't Get It
When I first saw previews for this show, I had high hopes for it. There are not many shows out there that depict what life is like in the teaching profession (Boston Public, Season 4 of The Wire), but there have been countless movies made. All the movies seem to have the same theme. Career changer teacher comes in to save the day, or teacher with something to prove wins over the hearts of his or her students and everyone is better off for it. As a teacher, I can relate to those movies and even the past tv shows about education.
Unfortunately, this show lacks reality. Too many times, I thought to myself, "This is so unrealistic." Most of what happened in the first 2 episodes (I didn't even make it to episode 3) would never actually happen in a school. It's so far fetched from reality I just don't get it. I have never watched Sunny, but I've heard great things and I'm not trying to compare the 2. I'm going purely off of this show and I have to say, I'm sadly disappointed. I was hoping for better.
